Shang Chi Review: Marvel Studios' 'Shang Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings' Early Reactions Promise A Super Fun Ride

Los Angeles, August 17, 2021: Marvel Studios' next superhero gem, Shang Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings, is getting nearer to its much-awaited outright theatrical release, which is September 3. The Simu Liu fronted is touted to be a historical moment in MCU as it is the first Marvel film to feature an all Asian and Asian-American cast. ## Shang Chi, which is making its debut in MCU, was first announced by Marvel Studios at San Diego Comic-Con 2019, where Kevin Feige confirmed Simu Liu would play the Master of Kung Fu. The latest addition to the MCU's growing roster of heroes will rise in this origin story set after Avengers: Endgame when his father Wenwu (Tony Leung), who is the real Mandarin and leader of the Ten Rings, calls him back into action. ## It is also the first Marvel movie to get an exclusive theatrical release for 45-days in the pandemic era, unlike Scarlett Johansson-led Black Widow, which debuted on Disney+ premiere access and in theaters on the same day. Disney CEO Bob Chapek, however, has called Shang Chi's release an "experiment" amid the covid-19 pandemic, which got a response from the lead actor Simu Liu, who didn't seem too pleased with CEO's comment. ## Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the movie stars Simu Liu as Shang-Chi alongside Awkwafina, Meng'er Zhang, Fala Chen, Florian Munteanu, Benedict Wong, Michelle Yeoh, and Tony Leung in prominant roles. Additionally, Tim Roth reprises his role as the Abomination from The Incredible Hulk (2008) and will be seen fighting with Shang Chi in the film. ## Marvel Studios held the world premiere of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings in Los Angeles on Monday, August 16. The cast, crew, and many other celebrities, as well as select entertainment journalists, attended the first showing of the highly anticipated MCU movie. While the full reviews are yet to come, those who watched the movie during the premiere, were able to share their thoughts on the film. Los Angeles, August 15, 2021: Simu Liu, the leading star of Marvel's upcoming superhero film, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, has called out the CEO of Disney Bob Chapek for calling the theatrical release of the film an "experiment" amid the testing times of the covid-19 pandemic. ## During a Walt Disney Company earnings call this week, Disney CEO Bob Chapek called the current climate for releasing movies in theaters a challenge. In addition, he said that Shang-Chi would be "an interesting experiment for us because it's got only a 45-day window for us". A lot of people want to see Shang-Chi succeed because of what it will mean for the larger cinematic landscape. Los Angeles, August 14, 2021: Amid the criticism of its theatrical - Disney+ Premier model, Disney has been able to crack a deal with Oscar winner, Emma Stone to return to star in the sequel to crime comedy film "Cruella", based on the character Cruella de Vil from Dodie Smith's 1956 novel The Hundred and One Dalmatians. ## Due to the covid-19 pandemic, Disney opted for a two-way release on theaters and on Disney+ PVOD tier for some of its releases including "Cruella", which debuted on May 26 this year. The movie earned more than $222 million in worldwide ticket sales, making it a fruitful outing for Disney. Stone joins returning director Craig Gillespie and returning writer Tony McNamara in the sequel ## Earlier, Black Widow star Scarlett Johansson filed a lawsuit against Disney over its hybrid release model, alleging that it has breached her contract which reportadly promised an exclusive theatrical release of her films. After Johansson's lawsuit, there were speculations that Emma Stone might also take the same route over Cruella's release, however, that hasn't happened yet. ## Dwayne Johnson, however, supported Disney for its release model during the pandemic for his action-adventure film, Jungle Cruise, which debuted on July 30. The film has so far grossed $73.1M domestic, $201M+ worldwide, and $50M in estimated Disney+ Premier global PVOD monies, good for a current estimated global haul of $251M+. ## Meanwhile, Cruella 2 is still in the pre-production stage, and it's not certain yet whether the movie will be an outright theatrical release or like its predecessor released simultaneously in homes. The actress's agreement with Disney's Marvel Entertainment/Marvel Studios guaranteed an exclusive theatrical release of her films, in which her salary was mostly based on the film's box-office performance.## Disney countered Johansson's lawsuit in a rather fiery statement, stating, "There is no merit whatsoever to this filing. The lawsuit is especially sad and distressing in its callous disregard for the horrific and prolonged global effects of the COVID-19 pandemic", Disney said. ## The company went on to state that the actress has already received $20 million for her work and argued that "the release of 'Black Widow' on Disney+ with Premier Access has significantly enhanced her ability to earn additional compensation on top of the $20M she has received to date". ## Black Widow was made available on Disney's streaming service for a $30 rental fee at the same time it debuted in theaters on July 9. "Black Widow" set a pandemic-era box office record with $80 million in North America. It earned an additional $78 million overseas and $60 million on Disney Plus. The US Theater Association Slams Disney For Simulatanous Digital Release Of Marvel's Tentpole Movie - Black Widow

Los Angeles, July 19, 2021: The US cinema association, the National Association of Theater Owners (NATO), has slammed Walt Disney Co. for simultaneous Disney+ and theatrical release of Marvel Studios' Black Widow, saying the decision has undercut the tentpole's box office potential and promoted piracy. ## After taking a record pandemic era opening, the Scarlett Johansson led superhero movie falls flat in the second weekend and recorded the decline of 67 percent, one of the biggest drops ever for a Marvel title, and the worst among the Marvel films released by Disney. The record decline didn't go well with theaters owners who come out hard on Disney for their two-way release decision. ## "Despite assertions that this pandemic-era improvised release strategy was a success for Disney and the simultaneous release model, it demonstrates that an exclusive theatrical release means more revenue for all stakeholders in every cycle of the movie's life", NATO said in a statement (via THR). ## In the second weekend (16-18 July), Black Widow recorded $26.3 million domestic gross and fell to no. 2, behind Warner Bros.' Space Jam: A New Legacy, which topped the chart with a better-than-expected domestic debut of $31.7. Space Jam, however, is also the simultaneous theaters and HBO Max release, coming in Warner Bros.' release plan of its 2021 movies. ## NATO thinks the standalone superhero offering from Marvel should have debuted in the $92 million to $100 million range domestically. The trade organization points to cannibalization from Disney+ and piracy as the prime culprits for Black Widow's performance.## "One can assume the family-oriented Disney+ household is larger. How much? How much password sharing is there among Disney+ subscribers? It's not going to be like the New Beverly, the New Beverly has its own vibe. The Vista is like a crown jewel kind of thing. So it will be the best prints, we'll show older films, but they'll be like older films where you can hold a fortnight engagement", he added. ## Talking more about Vista Theater, it opened on October 9, 1923, as a single-screen theater. In addition to screening films, the theater also showed vaudeville acts on stage. The original seating capacity in the auditorium held space for 838 seats. While the filming on Thor 4 has recently been concluded, the action star confirmed that Guardians of the Galaxy 3 starts filming later this year. ## While he was tight-lipped on what fans can expect from the ragtag, intergalactic crew's next adventure, Guardians of the Galaxy 3, the best summation of his quote was that it is going to be director James Gunn's another masterful work. Reflecting on working with Gunn and Thor 4 director Taika Waititi, Pratt described both directors as rock stars in their own way who have their own styles of working. He continued to gush over Waititi, calling him a madman and genius. ## "He is the kind of guy who can deliver an amazing movie… That's the destination", Pratt said. "The journey to getting there [is] just as fun as watching the movie. He's vibrant, he's always making the crew laugh, he's doing bits. You can't believe he's the director", he added. ## Thor: Love and Thunder, starring Chris Hemsworth as Thor, is scheduled to be released on May 6, 2022, as part of Phase Four of the MCU while Guardians of the Galaxy 3 will be hitting theaters on 5 May 2023. Apart from these two Marvel films, Pratt will be reprising his role in Universal Pictures' Jurassic World: Dominion, scheduled to debut in theaters on June 10, 2022. ## Stay tuned...
