Surprise Sleeper Hits of 2025: Low To Mid-Budget Films That Conquered the Indian Box Office Bollywood

Surprise Sleeper Hits of 2025: Low To Mid-Budget Films That Conquered the Indian Box Office

Mumbai, August 7 - The year 2025 has been full of surprises at the Indian box office, and there are still five months left. Amid the frenzy of big-budget spectacles in 2025, a group of low to mid budget budget films stunned everyone by not only becoming critical successes but also box office winners. These films, spanning multiple languages and genres, didn't have the advantage of huge star power or massive marketing campaigns. Instead, they relied on storytelling, originality, and strong word-of-mouth to win hearts. ## Saiyaara (Hindi – Romantic Drama) - No one expected a debutant-led love story to become the biggest romantic hit in years, but Ahaan Pandey and Aneet Padda's chemistry, Mohit Suri's direction, and Mithoon's soulful music turned Saiyaara into a cultural phenomenon. Made on a budget of around 60 crores, the movie started strongly and exploded eventually as the week progressed, becoming the first Hindi romantic film to cross 300 crores net. ## Mahavatar Narsimha (Hindi – Animated Devotional Action Drama) - An animated retelling of the Narsimha avatar from the Puranas, Mahavatar Narsimha emerged as a surprise family favourite. Released with little hype and almost zero expectations, it tapped into the growing demand for Indian devotional content. Made on a budget of around 5-10 crores, the film's strong visuals and devotional storytelling led it to cross the 100 crore mark in just 10 days, making it the first Indian animated movie to achieve the feat. ## Dragon (Tamil – Coming-of-age Comedy Drama) - Starring Pradeep Ranganathan, Dragon is the biggest Tamil blockbuster of the year. It is a story about a college dropout who deceptively secures a high-paying job, but is forced to accept a major challenge to avoid being exposed. Made on a budget of around 20 crores, the movie went on to gross around 120 crores in India, as one of the highest-grossing Tamil titles of the year. ## Tourist Family (Tamil – Comedy Drama) - It is being hailed as one of the most heartwarming stories of the year. The story follows a Sri Lankan Tamil family who, following the Sri Lankan economic crisis, arrive in India in search of a better future. It was made on a budget of around 5 crores, and went on to gross over 70 crores in India, and became a big blockbuster. ## Here's a Look at The Top Sleeper Hits of 2025 That Conquered The Indian Box OfficeMovie TitleOriginal LanguageBudgetIndia GBOCVerdictSaiyaaraHindi₹ 60.00 Cr₹ 425 Cr* expectedSuper BlockbusterMahavatar NarsimhaHindi₹ 10.00 Cr₹ 200+ CrBlockbuster Dragon Tamil₹ 20.00 Cr₹ 119.00 CrBlockbusterTourist FamilyTamil₹ 5.00 Cr₹ 71.75 CrBlockbusterSu From SoKannada₹ 4.00 Cr₹ 75+ CrBlockbusterThalaivan ThalaiviiTamil₹ 25.00 Cr₹ 65.00 CrSuperhitAlappuzha GymkhanaMalayalam₹ 10.00 Cr₹ 50.60 CrSuperhitF1 MovieEnglish₹ - Cr₹ 115.00 CrSuperhit## Su From So (Kannada – Comedy Drama) - Set in the coastal village of Marlur linked to Someshwara, the story follows Ashoka, a carefree young man whose innocent crush spirals into rumours of possession by a ghost named Sulochana, upending village life through a cascade of comedic supernatural events. It is already the highest-grossing Kannada movie of the year with domestic gross collection of over 50 crores, against the budget of around 4 crores. ## Thalaivan Thalaivii (Tamil – Romantic Action Comedy) - Starring Vijay Sethupathi and Nithya Menen, the film became another modest-budgeted Tamil box office hit of the year. It reportedly cost 25 crores the make, and it has already grossed around 60 crores domestically and is still going strong. ## Alappuzha Gymkhana (Malayalam – Sports Drama) - Directed by Khalid Rahman and starring Naslen among others, it is a story of a group of students, who, after failing exams, try entering college through sports quotas, picking boxing. They luck through district matches, but face uncertainty at higher competition levels. It was a success at the box office, grossing over 50 crores in India, against the budget of around 10 crores. ## F1 (Hollywood – Sports Drama) - Brad Pitt's F1, directed by Joseph Kosinski (of Top Gun: Maverick fame), was expected to perform well globally — but what surprised trade analysts was its exceptional run in India. Despite being a niche sports film centred on Formula 1 racing, F1 resonated with Indian audiences, thanks to sleek visuals, thrilling race sequences, and Brad Pitt's enduring star power. It grossed around 115 crores in India, emerging as one of the highest-grossing original Hollywood films. ## Stay tuned...

Mahavatar Narsimha Is The Number 1 Movie This Weekend (August 1-3) At The Indian Box Office, Beating Combined Gross of Son of Sardaar 2 and Dhadak 2

Mumbai, August 4 - It was another weekend of surprise blockbusters and underwhelming performances at the Indian box office. Despite the arrival of three new films with known stars, it was Kaleem Productions and Hombale Films' Mahavatar Narismha, which dominated the weekend (August 1-3) and emerged as the number 1 film in India. ## Directed by Ashwin Kumar, the epic animated devotional action drama had a remarkable second weekend domestically with approximately 55 crore gross collection (46.50 crores net), up by an unheard growth of around 190% from the opening weekend collection of 19 crores gross (15.85 crores net). For an animated Indian title, these are out of this world numbers. ## The excellent second weekend has taken the total collection of Mahavatar Narsimha to around 108.50 crores gross (91.25 crores net) at the domestic box office, while the worldwide cume total is approximately 112 crores. It is already the highest-grossing Indian animated film of all time by a long margin, and also the highest-grossing animated film in India (not including The Lion King and Mufasa: The Lion King). ## The second biggest grosser of the weekend (August 1-3) at the Indian box office was Ajay Devgn's Son of Sardaar 2, which otherwise underperformed. It grossed around 30 crores (24.75 crores net) in its opening weekend. Vijay Deverakonda's Kingdom, which opened strongly on 21.25 crores gross on Thursday, the movie slowed down after that and grossed 26.50 crores (22.50 crores net) from Friday to Sunday. ## Yash Raj Films' sensational blockbuster Saiyaara was super strong in its third weekend, grossing 23 crores (19.25 crores net), pushing its total domestic collection to around 360 crores gross (~300 crores net) in 17 days. There was also Dharma Productions' romantic drama Dhadak 2, which minted approximately 13.75 crores gross (11.40 crores net). ## Here Are the Top 5 Movies in India During August 1-3 Weekend - ## 1. Mumbai, August 3 - Kaleem Productions and Hombale Films' animated epic devotional drama Mahavatar Narsimha is wreaking havoc at the box office on its second Sunday, and is eyeing 28-30+ crores gross collection in all versions, with a sensational jump of around 55%. ## The film is going from strength to strength and posting unimaginable numbers. To put this into perspective, Mahavatar Narsimha opened to a little over 2 crores gross collection, and by the 10th day, the movie rose to 15x, which is one of the rarest moments. ## With the second Sunday collection, the first movie in the ambitious Mahavatar Cinematic Universe has entered the 100 crores gross collection at the Indian box office, with the total collection expected to be around 110 crores at the end of the day. ## The movie kicked off its second weekend with 9+ crores gross, followed by a remarakble 100% growth on Saturday with 18+ crores gross. The Hindi version leads the charge with the estimated gross of around 80 crores in 10 days, followed by the Telugu with around 24-25 crores gross in as many days. ## The excellent growth over the second weekend has ensured that Mahavatar Narsimha will do very well during the weekdays. The new releases have failed to challenge the film much, which means it has almost a free run till August 14, when War 2 and Coolie will release. Whether the film can go on and touch 200 crores gross or fall short remains to be seen, but the chances are looking bright at the moment for the film to reach the milestone. ## Stay tuned...

Directed by Ashwin Kumar, it has already become the highest-grossing animated Indian film of all time, beating 2005's Hanuman. ## After the very good opening weekend collection of 19 crores gross, followed by excellent hold on Monday, Mahavatar Narsimha jumped further on discounted Tuesday. With +20% growth, the film grossed approximately 9+ crores on its first Tuesday, and it was the second biggest grosser for the day in India. ## The total collection of Mahavatar Narsimha is approximately 35.25 crores gross (29.50 crores net) after 5 days, and it is heading towards 50 crores gross first week collection at the domestic box office, which is a massive milestone for the film, as no one saw it coming for the release date. ## Hindi Version Leads The Way, Followed By Telugu ## The Hindi version has been the major driving force behind the film's success. After collecting around 15.40 crore net (18.50 crore gross) over the first four days, the movie scored an estimated 5.50 crore net (6.50 crore gross) on Tuesday. This pushes the Hindi version's total to 20.50+ crore net and over 24.50 crore gross in 5 days. Mahavatar Narsimha Vs Hari Hara Veera Mallu First Monday Box Office: Animated Blockbuster Stuns Pawan Kalyan-starrer With 3x More Collection Tollywood

Mahavatar Narsimha Vs Hari Hara Veera Mallu First Monday Box Office: Animated Blockbuster Stuns Pawan Kalyan-starrer With 3x More Collection

Hyderabad, July 29 - In the shocking turn of events, Kaleem Productions and Hombale Films' low-budget animated epic action drama Mahavatar Narsimha has stunned superstar Pawan Kalyan-fronted period action drama Hari Hara Veera Mallu at the domestic box office on their respective first Mondays. ## Released on July 25, the first chapter in the ambitious Mahavatar Cinematic Universe is rewriting the rules, registering a Monday collection (Day 4) of approximately 7.25 crore gross domestically, which is more than triple the 2.25 crore gross earned by Hari Hara Veera Mallu on its first Monday (Day 5). ## Even though there is no comparison between the two movies, as the scale and budget of Hari Hara Veera Mallu are much higher than the animated film, the former had a shocking collapse after an underwhelming opening weekend. This once again proved the power of word of mouth and the unpredictable, harsh reality of the box office. ## Directed by Krish Jagarlamudi and A. M. Jyothi Krishna, Hari Hara Veera Mallu was envisioned as a grand period saga starring one of Telugu cinema’s biggest superstars. However, the film's inability to maintain momentum beyond the opening day highlights the fickle nature of box office performance and the increasing influence of word of mouth. In 5 days so far, the movie has grossed approximately 91 crores, after taking the opening of 55 crores domestically.## In stark contrast, Mahavatar Narsimha is turning out to be a sleeper success story. After opening at 2.10 crore gross, the film saw explosive weekend growth, collecting 19 crore in three days. The rock-solid Monday performance has taken its total to 26.25 crore gross in just four days. With strong legs and surging demand, the film is racing towards the 50 crore milestone — an incredible feat for an animated feature in India. ## Stay tuned...

After collecting around 4.50 crore net (5.50 crore gross) over the first two days, the movie scored an estimated 6.75–7 crore net (~8 crore gross) on Sunday. ## This pushes the Hindi version's weekend total to 11+ crore net and over 13.50 crore gross.
