Alia Bhatt's 'Gangubai Kathiawadi' To Campaign For 95th Academy Awards
The Sanjay Leela Bhansali directorial is officially launching a campaign in major categories including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Screenplay, and others for Oscars 2023. The movie will hold screenings in London and Los Angeles this week.
"Gangubai Kathiawadi" is based on the book, Mafia Queens of Mumbai, and charts the rise of a simple girl who was duped and sold to a brothel. With no choice but to embrace the ways of destiny and swing it in her favor, Gangu (Bhatt) becomes the voice of the suppressed and makes it her mission to try and legitimize a tainted profession that dates back to ancient times.
Produced by Bhansali Productions and Pen India Limited, "Gangubai Kathiawadi" is the 3rd Indian movie to submit for the Oscars 2023 nominations. Earlier, the Gujarati movie "The Last Film Show" was officially selected as India's entry for the Oscars while SS Rajamouli's global blockbuster "RRR" will be competing in various categories.
"Gangubai Kathiawadi", which was released in February, was the first Bollywood hit of 2022 and grossed approx. 210 crores worldwide. It debuted on Netflix 8 weeks after its theatrical run and became the most-watched Indian movie on the streamer. The movie stayed in the Top 10 trending movies in more than 25 countries for several weeks.
