Mumbai, October 16 - Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna's horror comedy Thamma was expected to be the clear Diwali showstopper, being the only major Bollywood release with bankable stars during the festive weekend. However, the landscape seems to be shifting unexpectedly. Harshvardhan Rane and Sonam Bajwa's romantic drama Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat, which initially appeared to be a smaller contender, is steadily gaining momentum. The film's buzz has reportedly grown stronger in recent days, surprising trade analysts and exhibitors alike. According to reports, the makers of Deewaniyat have now demanded equal showcasing in national multiplex chains, challenging Thamma's presumed dominance. This development marks an unforeseen twist in what was shaping up to be a solo Bollywood Diwali release. While Thamma was poised to secure the lion's share of shows across major circuits, as many believed it would get for being a potential blockbuster due to its connection with Maddock Horror Comedy Universe (MHCU), the confidence of Deewane Ki Deewaniyat's producers indicates they believe the film's current buzz and audience curiosity could put it on par with the Ayushmann–Rashmika starrer. "PVRInox is the distributor of Thamma, and one of the top management employees of PVRInox is now a part of Team Thama, heading distribution. The Deewaniyat team has asked all the national chains to go by the demand among the audience, rather than the foul play of leveraging equations for better showcasing", Bollywood Hungama reports. On the other hand, the Thamma producer Dinesh Vijan of Maddock Films and the senior former PVRInox executive have demanded 75 per cent shows, leaving only 25 per cent for Deewaniyat. If both parties don't come to a solution soon, the advance booking of both films, which are scheduled to open on October 17 ahead of their October 21 release, might be delayed. It remains to be seen how exhibitors balance screens between the two films, but one thing is clear — Diwali 2025 just got a lot more interesting for Bollywood fans and the box office alike. Bengaluru, October 15 - Rishab Shetty's blockbuster prequel Kantara Chapter 1 has rewritten box office history in Karnataka, emerging as the highest-grossing film ever in the state. The period folk action thriller continues its phenomenal run and is now marching toward the unprecedented milestone of 200 crores gross in Karnataka alone. Written, directed, and headlined by Shetty, Kantara prequel has grossed approximately 185+ crores through its second Wednesday (14 days). It has surpassed the lifetime total of 2022's Kantara (183.60 crores) to become the state's biggest grosser — achieving this feat in just 14 days. Interestingly, the average ticket price for Kantara Chapter 1 in Karnataka has been recorded at over 300, a rare occurrence made possible after the makers took a firm stand against the state government's price cap order. The High Court's stay on the restriction — which had limited prices to 200 — played a crucial role in the film's massive revenue surge. Produced by Hombale Films, the banner behind Kantara and KGF Chapter 2 (the third-biggest grosser in Karnataka), Kantara Chapter 1 is now on course to become the first-ever film in history to cross 200 crores gross in the state, a feat expected to be achieved by its third weekend. Earning ₹656 crore worldwide(As of Now), with ₹155.35 crore (As of Now)coming from its Hindi release alone, driven by strong word-of-mouth, the essence of the story infused every small cultural nuances that connected the audience irrespective of language. Its compelling narrative and relatable characters turned it into a pan-India experience, setting benchmarks for Hindi-dubbed releases. While Kantara dominated, other releases like Coolie, Game Changer, and Mirai achieved only moderate results in Hindi markets. Coolie collected ₹37.23 crore in Hindi, supported by pre-release hype, a high-profile cast, and action-packed promotions. Game Changer earned ₹32.93 crore, contributing about 17.7% to its worldwide total of ₹186.28 crore, thanks to star power, fan anticipation, and premiere shows. Similarly, Mirai, with a pan-India cast and mythological-fantasy storyline, garnered ₹16.85 crore in Hindi from its ₹144.02 crore worldwide total. While these films had niche appeal, repeat viewings, and targeted promotions that helped them sustain for a few weeks, they could not replicate the kind of Hindi market success Kantara enjoyed. Films like Lokah Chapter 1 (₹3.74 crore) and They Call Him OG (₹3.32 crore) performed modestly, maintaining presence in select multiplexes. While films such as Coolie, Game Changer, and Mirai managed moderate collections, none could match the impact of Kantara across the northern and central belt audiences. Despite having pan-India casts, high-octane action, and visually impressive sequences, these films fell short of truly resonating with viewers. Their performance highlights that star power or production scale alone is not enough to guarantee widespread success. To achieve blockbuster status beyond the South, a film must combine compelling storytelling with cultural relatability, emotional depth, and narratives that transcend linguistic boundaries. Strong promotions, word-of-mouth momentum, and strategic release planning are important, but the core of a hit lies in connecting with audiences on an emotional and experiential level—something Kantara accomplished with remarkable finesse. Future filmmakers aiming for pan-India success must focus on stories that engage viewers beyond spectacle, creating immersion, relatability, and lasting impact.
