Kalyani Priyadarshan's Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra Creates History, Becomes Highest-Grossing Female-Led South Indian Film

BY SUNIT JANGIR

Kochi, September 2 - Kalyani Priyadarshan's superhero film Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra scripts a major win for the female-led films as it has created history by becoming the highest-grossing South Indian film of all time. The film, which was released to decent anticipation, has stormed the box office by collecting over 80 crores gross worldwide in just 5 days. It has become the highest-grossing female-led film in South Indian cinema history on its 6th day, by beating Keerthi Suresh's Mahanati (84+ crores) as the worldwide total is expected to be over 90 crores at the end of the day. For years, female-centric films in South cinema have been celebrated for their critical acclaim and path-breaking storytelling, but only a few managed to set benchmarks commercially. Until now, Mahanati (84.5 crores), Rudhrama Devi (82 crores), Arundhati (68.5 crores), and Bhagamathie (64 crores) held the top spots in this category. With Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra racing past these films in less than a week, the film has rewritten box office history. The top 5 biggest South Indian female-led grossers are dominated by the lady superstar Anushka Shetty, with three films, which were released in the era of male dominance. Those films (Rudhrama Devi, Arundhati, Bhagamathie) will be miles ahead of Lokah if adjusted with inflation, but with non-inflation, the Malayalam blockbuster has claimed the title. Kalyani Priyadarshan’s Big Moment Kalyani, daughter of acclaimed filmmaker Priyadarshan, has steadily built her reputation in South Indian cinema, but Lokah marks a true turning point in her career. Her powerful portrayal of Chandra has not only resonated with audiences but also proven that female-led films can achieve blockbuster status on par with mainstream star-driven projects. War 2 Box Office Woes: Hrithik Roshan, Jr. NTR's Actioner Set To Finish As The Lowest YRF Spy Universe Grosser Domestically

BY SUNIT JANGIR

Mumbai, September 2 - When War (2019) exploded at the box office with nearly 475 crore worldwide, it set the bar sky-high for its sequel. Expectations grew even bigger when Yash Raj Films announced the addition of Telugu superstar Jr. NTR alongside Hrithik Roshan, making War 2 one of the most anticipated films of Spy Universe. Everything was going well as the industry was in the joyce mood three weeks before in the anticipation of the film's box office juggernaut. And then came D-Day, and despite the hype, the film gave a little shock to the trade with the lower-than-expected opening. This little shock soon turned into an utter disappointment as the film could never recover from its underwhelming opening. Directed by Ayan Mukerji, the film is in its third week of box office run, and it can be said that it has fallen short of expectations, and fallen short by miles, as it is now set to finish as the lowest-grossing film in the franchise at the domestic box office in its original Hindi version. War 2's Box office Struggle After the underwhelming but still respectable opening weekend of 191+ crores gross, including 153 crores in Hindi, War 2 lost momentum completely at the domestic box office as it fell like a deck of cards without putting up any fight. After 19 days, the film has grossed only 280 crores, including 212 crores (176+ crores net) in Hindi in India. Domestically, War 2 will end below the lifetime collection of Salman Khan-fronted Ek Tha Tiger, which was the first film in the YRF Spy Universe. ETT was released more than a decade ago in 2012, and despite the much lower ticket prices and no franchise advantage, the movie grossed over 263 crores (198+ crores net) domestically in Hindi. With War 2 nearing its end, it will end up as the weakest domestic performer in the Spy Universe, a sharp contrast to the roaring success of its predecessor. Even in all versions (including Telugu and Tamil), War 2 has barely managed to cross Ek Tha Tiger domestically, while at the worldwide box office, it will end up as the second lowest grosser in the Spy Universe, only ahead of ETT, which grossed 320 crores worldwide. The Bigger Picture The YRF Spy Universe has been home to some of Bollywood’s biggest blockbusters, from Ek Tha Tiger to Pathaan. War 2 was expected to build on that momentum, but its struggle highlights the risks of relying too heavily on franchise value and star power without equally strong storytelling. War 2 is far from the box office monster fans hoped for. As it ends up as the lowest domestic grosser in the Spy Universe, the pressure now shifts to upcoming instalments like Alpha, Pathaan 2, to restore the franchise's dominance. Stay tuned...

The Future of Superhero Lokah Franchise Revealed: Promises To Be An Epic Conclusion

BY SUNIT JANGIR

Kochi, September 2 - The Malayalam cinema has its own Marvellous beginning of the superhero franchise, Lokah. The first part of the series, Lokah Chapter 1 - Chandra, starring Kalyani Priyadarshan, was released recently amid glowing reviews, which led the movie to do wonders at the box office. Directed by Dominic Arun, Chandra has set the box office on fire, and scored the third biggest opening weekend ever for Malayalam cinema with 66 crores gross collection worldwide. This is by far the biggest Mollywood opening for a female-led title, and also for the superhero genre, which, anyway, is largely unexplored. Chandra featured post-credit scenes, featuring Dulquer Salmaan, who is also the producer of the film, and Tovino Thomas, as both will lead the next chapters of the franchise. As the anticipation is now all-time high for what will be going to unfold in the Lokah universe, the details regarding its future have been revealed. During the recent interview, cinematographer Nimish Ravi reportedly revealed that Lokah will be a five-part epic saga, where each film will be bigger than the last one. He also revealed that the director has already locked the stories for all five movies, which means the next film in the franchise will start rolling soon. Going by Ravi's words, Lokah will have a Marvel-esque conclusion where the heroes of the Lokah universe are likely to fight the main villain of it. If people are wondering who could be the main villain, he revealed that right from the opening scene of Chandra, there is a hidden clue about the ultimate villain of the series. With the astonishing success of Chandra, it is needless to say that the sky will be the limit for the next film. Stay tuned...

Baaghi Franchise A Step Away From 500 Crore Domestic Box Office Milestone: Baaghi 4 To Do The Honours?

BY SUNIT JANGIR

Mumbai, September 2 - Bollywood action star Tiger Shroff's Baaghi franchise has emerged as one of the most bankable action sagas in Bollywood over the past decade. With its high-octane stunts, chartbuster music, and Shroff's ever-growing fan following, the series has maintained consistent box office success across its three instalments so far. The stage is set for the fourth instalment, which releases on September 5. Directed by A Harsha, Baaghi 4 is the darkest film in the Baaghi franchise, being the first to get an A certificate from CBFC. There is a great deal that depends on this film, which is also a make-or-break moment for Tiger, who has been going through a rough period. The success of Baaghi will not only give a big relief to Tiger, but it will take the Baaghi franchise past 500 crores gross collection at the domestic box office. Collectively, the franchise has already amassed around 428 crores in India with three films, making it one of the few Bollywood action series to maintain steady commercial momentum. With the arrival of Baaghi 4, the series now stands on the brink of entering the prestigious 500 crore club domestically. The film will need a little over 70 crores gross to take the franchise into the prestigious box office club, which looks like an easy task, given the past films of the series, but then, it will not be as easy as it looks in the current scenario. No Big Task But Need To Overcome Challanges Tiger Shroff was a real deal in the pre-COVID-19 era, where he consistently delivered box office numbers. However, things have changed since then, as his films have struggled to attract audiences to the cinema halls. For Baaghi 4 to help the franchise cross the 500 crore milestone seems like no herculean task, but it has to overcome challenges, including franchise fatigue and Tiger's poor box office form. Industry watchers believe Baaghi 4 has every chance of pushing the franchise comfortably past the landmark, provided it carries the same mix of adrenaline, emotion, and music that has been the hallmark of the franchise. If the upcoming instalment performs as expected, the Baaghi series will join the elite club of Bollywood franchises that have crossed the half-a-thousand-crore mark worldwide, strengthening Tiger Shroff's stature as one of the few stars who can drive a franchise on his shoulders. Tiger Shroff's Baaghi 4 Advance Booking Update

BY SUNIT JANGIR

Mumbai, September 1 – The wait is almost over for Tiger Shroff fans as the advance booking of his much-awaited action thriller Baaghi 4 is set to open on September 2, just three days before the film's release on September 5. The makers officially confirmed the development. Directed by A Harsha, Baaghi 4 has managed to generate good buzz with its teaser (August 11) and trailer (August 30), both of which showcased Tiger Shroff in a darker, deadlier avatar with high-octane action sequences that have become the hallmark of the Baaghi franchise. With strong fan anticipation, trade circles expect the film to do well at the ticket window. Produced by Sajid Nadiadwala under Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment, Baaghi 4 promises to be the biggest instalment in the franchise yet, with an intense storyline, gripping action set pieces, and Tiger Shroff returning in full action mode. It is the first film of the franchise to receive an A-rating from CBFC. All eyes will be on how the booking proceeds for the film, as Tiger has had a rough phase in the post-pandemic era. Rishab Shetty's Kantara: Chapter 1 Eyes Record Pre-Release Business In Telugu States

BY SUNIT JANGIR

Hyderabad, September 1 - Actor and director Rishab Shetty's highly-anticipated folk action drama prequel Kantara: Chapter 1 is looking at the record theatrical business in the Telugu states, in which the first film, Kantara, was a big success. The expectations from Kanatara Chapter 1 are sky high, since the original film became a massive blockbuster. Despite being the Kannada origin title, the trade is highly optimistic about the upcoming film's success in North India and Telugu states, where the stakes are higher than before. As the film is getting nearer to its release date, the makers have started negotiating the business for the film, and for the Telugu states (Andhra Pradesh and Telangana), the film is targeting a staggering over 100 crore pre-release theatrical business. According to the Telugu media reports, the makers are quoting 40 crores for Nizam and 45 crores for Andhra. For the entire AP/TG, the pre-release business is said to be closing around 100 crores on a full recoverable advance basis. The business is expected to be locked on or around this price tag, which is the highest ever for a non-Telugu movie. Moreover, the quoted price for the Telugu states is usually reserved only for tier-1 star heroes of Tollywood. To break even, Kantara Chapter 1 will need to gross over 170 crores in the Telugu states, which is more than thrice the AP/TG gross collection of Kantara. There is definitely a huge buzz for the film in Telugu states, but to recover that business won't be easy for it, especially knowing the superstar Pawan Kalyan's They Call Him OG is releasing just a week before on September 25. OG is easily the most hyped film of PK in recent times, and is expected to do wonders at the box office. If the talks are positive, it will badly impact the forthcoming movies in the Telugu states. Produced by Hombale Films, Kantara Chapter 1 is the prequel to the 2022 film Kantara, as the story delves deeper into the origins of the divine tradition and ancestral conflict introduced in the first film. It stars Rishab Shetty, who has also directed it, in the lead role alongside Rukmini Vasanth, Gulshan Devaiah, and Jayaram in key roles. The film is scheduled to release on October 2nd in multiple languages. Stay tuned...

Sidharth Malhotra's Top 5 Opening Weekend Grossers: Param Sundari At No. 4 Behind Student of The Year

BY SUNIT JANGIR

Mumbai, September 1 - Bollywood actor Sidharth Malhotra returns to the big screen with the romantic-comedy Param Sundari, which is off to a good start at the box office. The movie carried a decent buzz, which also translated into footfalls on the expected lines. Param Sundari scored the opening weekend collection of around 27 crores net, which is among the biggest of his career, but the biggest opening weekend still belongs to Brothers, which released in 2015 and also starred Akshay Kumar. The action drama opened to good numbers and collected around 52 crore in its first three days. Close behind Brothers is romantic action thriller Ek Villain (2014), which turned out to be a game-changer for Sidharth. With its strong music and gripping storyline, the film earned over 50 crores net in its opening weekend and cemented the actor's standing among the bankable young stars of that time. Sidharth's debut film, Student of the Year (2012), backed by Karan Johar, continues to hold a special place. Despite being a launchpad for three newcomers, Sidharth, Varun Dhawan, and Alia Bhatt, the film impressed at the ticket windows with a 30 crore weekend. More than a decade later, it still outshines some of his recent work, including Param Sundari, when it comes to the opening performance. Just behind Param Sundari, which is the 4th biggest opening weekend grosser of the actor, is Kapoor & Sons (2016), which managed 26 crore despite not being promoted as a mass entertainer. Another notable film is Marjaavaan (2019), which collected over 24 crore but couldn't break into the top five weekend grossers of Sidharth. With Param Sundari placing fourth in his career's biggest opening weekends, it's evident that Sidharth's strongest box office impact so far has come from action-packed or ensemble films. As he continues to explore new genres, fans and trade alike will be watching closely to see if he can surpass the benchmark set by Brothers and deliver an even bigger opening in the future. Lokah Worldwide Box Office Day 4: Kalyani Priyadarshan's Superhero Saga Takes Flight With Blockbuster Weekend

BY SUNIT JANGIR

Kochi, September 1 - The Malayalam superhero spectacle Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra, starring Kalyani Priyadarshan and Naslen, has a massive extended opening weekend at the worldwide box office. Directed by Dominic Arun, the film has struck gold with audiences, setting new benchmarks for Malayalam cinema. On Sunday (Day 4), Dulquer Salmaan's Wayfarer Films production registered its biggest day yet in India, grossing over 11.50 crores, a remarkable jump that highlighted its growing momentum. This pushed the film's domestic total to approximately 28.25+ crores gross, which is among the all-time biggest for Malayalam cinema. The superhero drama has also been a massive hit overseas. With consecutive 20+ crore worldwide days, the film's overall tally now stands at 65+ crores worldwide after its extended four-day opening weekend. If the current estimates hold, Lokah will comfortably rank among the top 5 biggest Malayalam openers of all time, joining an elite list of top stars' blockbusters that have elevated the industry's stature in the global market. Lokah's impressive box office run signals a new chapter for Malayalam cinema, proving that the industry can deliver large-scale, globally appealing spectacles while retaining strong storytelling. Kalyani Priyadarshan’s turn as a superheroine has struck a chord with both youth and family audiences, while Dominic Arun's direction, Jakes Bejoy's BGM and Dulquer Salmaan's production vision have been widely praised. What is Next For Lokah Chapter 1? After the massive opening weekend, which has taken the trade, including the distributors, by surprise, the sky is the limit for the superhero film. It has turned into a box office phenomenon that isn't going to stop anytime soon. The advances for Monday are super strong and better than the opening day. With the current trend, the film is very likely to enter the 100 crores club worldwide in the opening week itself. All eyes will be on what happens next after it achieves this inevitable milestone. Mahavatar Narsimha Box Office Day 38: Animated Blockbuster Marches Towards 300 Crores In India

BY SUNIT JANGIR
