PM Narendra Modi Addresses The Nation On Coronavirus | Highlights Key Points

BY SACNILK

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation on ongoing coronavirus pandemic. This is the third time the prime minister has addressed the nation since he announced nationwide lockdown on 25th March. His address came after a long 6-hour virtual meeting with the chief ministers yesterday. ## In his address, the prime minister announced 'Lockdown 4' after May 17 which would be completely different with new rules. He also announced a much needed economic package worth 20 Lakh Crore to give boost the economy which has been hit hard by the pandemic. ## Here is the highlight from his speech - ## - It has been over 4 months that the world is battling coronavirus. 42 lakh have been infected globally. Over 2.45 lakh have died. In India, many have lost their loved ones. I offer my condolences. ## - Getting exhausted or accepting defeat, not an option. We need to save lives and move forward at the same time. ## - We need to strengthen our resolve. Since the last century, we've been hearing that the 21st century belongs to India. In the global scenario, we are tracking developments. When we see it from India's prism, it looks like that it is not just a dream, we are responsible to ensure that the 21st century belongs to India.## - We stand at a crucial juncture. This crisis has a message for India, an opportunity. I'd try explaining using an example. When the crisis started, not a single PPE kit was made in India, N-95s were produced in negligible numbers. Today, in India, 2 lakh PPEs and 2 lakh N-95s being produced.## - India, as this example, demonstrates, turned the crisis into an opportunity. ## - India's self-reliance takes into account global peace and coordination. Our heritage, our motherland, when we become self-reliant, increases the prospects of a safe and prosperous world.## - When India became open defecation free, the world changed. Be it tuberculosis, malnutrition, or polio, India's action impacted the world. International Solar Alliance is India's gift to the world in the fight against global warming. India's medicines serving as a ray of hope in today's times.## - The world has started to believe that we can fare very well, that we can contribute to the upliftment of humanity. We have had a glorious past. We were dubbed 'sone-ki-chidiya'. Times changed, we yearned for development. We are taking steps towards development today.## - Today, we have the resources, the will, we have fine talent. We will manufacture the best products, improve quality and modernize the supply chain, we can do this and we will.## India can become self-reliant. This would be based on 5 pillars:## 1) Economy: An economy that takes quantum jumps and not incremental gains.## 2) Infrastructure: Infrastructure is synonymous with a modern India.## 3) Our system: A system that helps us realize dreams, which is based on tech-driven facilities.## 4) Demography: Vibrant demography our strength.## 5) Demand: The demand and supply chain, we need to utilize the potential. We need to increase demand in the nation. Each stakeholder must be active.## - Announcing a special economic package in a bid to make India self-reliant. An important link. Around Rs 20 Lakh Crore. Around Rs 20 Lakh Crores which is around 10% of GDP. The package addresses sectors on which crores depend for livelihood.## - Package for farmers, for workers, who irrespective of circumstances, work for the nation. Package for MSMEs, who pay taxes sincerely and contribute. Package for Indian industry. From tomorrow, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will inform in detail.## - This signifies bold reforms, we must move forward. In the last six years, the reforms are undertaken, today, in crisis, we are much better off.## - The reform is in a bid to ensure that such a crisis impacts agriculture in the least possible manner. In a bid to enhance Human Resources and bid to strengthen the financial system. These reforms will attract investment and help Make in India.## - Hawkers, workers, help - they have faced difficulties in this time and have made sacrifices. Our duty now to make them better off, to work to further their interests. Keeping this in mind, be it poor, be it, workers, be it, fishermen, be it from the formal or informal sector, certain key announcements will be made.## - Local manufacturing, local supply chain: We realize the importance now. Local met our demands, locally saved us. Brands that are global were once similarly local. When people used them and these were branded, they became global from local. Its time to be vocal for local.## - We need to buy local products and spread the word. I am sure that we can do this. Your efforts have only increased my faith in you. I am proud to recollect that I had asked citizens to buy khadi and to support handloom workers; and in a short time, demand and sales touched record levels. You made it a big brand too. We got the results; and good results.## - Scientists and experts say that coronavirus will stay with us for long, but we can't make our lives revolve around this. We will wear masks, maintain distance, but not lose sight of our targets.## - In Lockdown 4, we will follow norms, fight COVID-19, and move ahead. It will be based on suggestions by the state. Details will be informed by May 18 after suggestions from the state. We will fight and move forward by following rules. Our responsibility to make India a self-reliant India will be powered by the energy of the 1.3 billion population. With a new energy and new determination, we need to move ahead. Who can stop us then? We can make India self-reliant, and we will. With faith and hope, I urge citizens to take care of their health and the ones around them.## Stay tuned...

COVID-19: Streaming films eligible for Oscar this year

BY SACNILK

Los Angeles, April 29 (IANS) The COVID-19 pandemic has forced the Academy Of Motion Picture Arts And Sciences to change rules and eligibility requirements for the 2021 Oscars, making movies of streaming services eligible to win the golden statuettes.## The Academy has tweaked its Oscar eligibility rules in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. The change is not permanent, and will apply to films released this year, reports variety.com.## During a meeting on Tuesday, the board of governors approved a temporary hold on the requirement that a film needs a seven-day theatrical run in a commercial theater in Los Angeles to qualify for the Oscars.## However, there's a catch and not all movies premiering on a streaming service will be eligible for Oscar. To get in Oscar contention, the streaming movie must have already had a planned theatrical release.## "The Academy firmly believes there is no greater way to experience the magic of movies than to see them in a theatre," said Academy president David Rubin and CEO Dawn Hudson, adding: "Our commitment to that is unchanged and unwavering. Nonetheless, the historically tragic COVID-19 pandemic necessitates this temporary exception to our awards eligibility rules. The Academy supports its members and colleagues during this time of uncertainty. We recognize the importance of their work being seen and also celebrated, especially now, when audiences appreciate movies more than ever."## Once movie theaters are allowed to re-open, the seven-day window will once again be required for eligibility.## The Academy also shared that it will eliminate an Oscar category. The sound mixing and sound editing categories will be combined into one award, reducing the total number of categories presented on the show to 23.## And in an effort to become more carbon-neutral, the Academy prohibited DVD screeners for the 94th Oscars gala. It also announced that for the first time all Academy members will be invited to participate in the preliminary round of voting for international feature films.## The 93rd Oscars will be held on February 28, 2021.## Stay tuned...

Telugu films with Rs 2,000 cr production value stuck due to lockdown

BY SACNILK

Hyderabad, April 29 (IANS) Coronavirus has come as a blockbuster blow for the Telugu film industry, the second biggest in India after Bollywood, as films valued Rs 2,000 crore either ready to be released or in production have been stuck for over a month.## With no chances of an early end to the crisis, the industry is not only staring at massive losses but also fear the loss of over 70,000 jobs in production, distribution, and exhibition departments.## Like many other industries and every film industry in the world, the coronavirus outbreak and the resultant lockdown brought everything to a standstill in Tollywood, as the Telugu film industry is popularly referred to.## According to well-known producer Daggubati Suresh, 15 films which were ready for release and another 70 films which were under various stages of production are stuck.## "Production varies from a film like RRR which is Rs 400 crore plus film to many films which are in the hundred crore bracket and a lot of films in the Rs 20-30 crore bracket. There are many with a budget of Rs 3-5 crore. There is quite a big money stalled. May be in production alone projects worth Rs 2,000 crore are stalled," Suresh told IANS.## The big banner movies stuck include 'RRR' of S.S. Rajamouli of 'Baahubali' fame. Starring Ram Charan and Jr. NTR in the lead roles, it is expected to be another magnum opus from Rajamouli.## Superstar Chiranjeevi's 'Acharya' is another big banner movie stuck due to lockdown. Movies of leading stars like Balakrishna, Allu Arjun, Vankatesh and Ravi Teja have gone behind schedule. Most of them are Rs 30-40 crore movies.## Nani and Vijay Devarkonda's movies were ready for release. Ram Pothineni-starrer 'Red' was also scheduled for April release.## The lockdown has brought all the production, distribution and exhibition activities of Suresh Productions to a grinding halt. The company had four films under production 'Narappa', 'Virata Parvam', 'Crush' and 'Krishna and his Leela' and it had planned three other movies.## "It's not just filmed under production which is hit. All three studios and 250-300 screens all are shut. The losses are huge," said Suresh.## He pointed out that 1,800 cinema theatres are the worst affected by the lockdown.## The second-largest film industry in the country after Hindi, Tollywood makes 250-275 movies every year. About 175 films are made in Telugu while about 100 films are dubbed from other languages. The budget varies from Rs 1-2 crore to Rs 200 crore, pointed out the ace producer.## "Tollywood's most successful film 'Baahubali' proved to be the biggest hit in India. Now 'RRR' will be the biggest film. It is basically a Telugu film being dubbed into other languages. Somewhere we are making the biggest films of the industry," said Suresh.## Every year 25-30 Hindi movies are made with Rs 100 crore budget while the number of Tollywood movies in this bracket will be around 12. Tamil industry ranks third in this category with 3-4 films.## Suresh foresees plenty of joblessness in the industry even after it gets back to work. "The filmmakers will try to save cost and try to remove the unnecessary flab. There will be a lot of digital interfaces and there will be a lot more work from home attitude."## Many low-level non-technical jobs and even mid-level managerial jobs are likely to go. Things may change even for outdoor shootings with less number of people handling the work. Huge joblessness is also feared in distribution and exhibition with cinema theatres resorting to lay-offs.## The producer does not expect things returning to normal in the industry until the vaccine or drug is made for COVID-19. "I don't think too much is happening. It could be a low of 6 months to a high of 12-15 months."## "All depends on when the vaccine and medicine will come. That's when we are fully done. If the process of developing a vaccine or medicine is slow then some small shootings and some post-production work can happen. The films may have to be released through OTT (over the top) or some other platform."## Creative Producer Venkat Sidda Reddy believes that Tollywood will make a comeback. "The film industry has seen so many ups and downs and I strongly feel that there will be a comeback. The looming uncertainties of shooting schedules, theater occupancy and the competition with the OTT platforms are definitely going to be major challenges but every challenge is also an opportunity," Reddy told IANS.## "With this sudden downward trend, the budgets will become smaller. With smaller budgets, shoot schedules have to be very well planned and we will have to find ways to work with smaller crews and shorter shooting schedules. This is a good opportunity to use technology and device processes that are lacking in the industry," said Reddy.## He believes that the low budget films with genre-specific films will have worldwide reach on OTT platforms. There will be a lot of opportunities in the OTT platform for newer ideas.## "With theaters closed and everyone binging on OTT, the producers, distributors, and exhibitors now know the real impact of OTT on films. So there will be a huge paradigm shift and as a supporter of Indie cinema, these challenging times are going to open doors for more opportunities," he added.## For more and latest news about Tollywood, stay tuned with us.

I am grateful for my health and family because we're seeing how badly this has ravaged the world. I am especially worried about those without the means or access to necessary healthcare and essential goods."## Stay tuned...
