Before departing to England for the World Cup 2019, team India captain Virat Kohli addressed media along with the coach Ravi Shastri on Tuesday (May 21). During the press conference, Virat stressed the importance of the intensity and focus throughout the tournament and confirmed the same 15-member squad that had been picked earlier. He also believes that this World Cup is the most challenging World Cup of his career.## "Personally, I think this is probably the most challenging World Cup of all the three that I've been a part of, because of the format. "Everyone has to be at their best intensity from the first match onward and we don't have any room for complacency".## "That's why it's the World Cup, that's why it's the most important tournament in the world. We expect that kind of pressure from the first second. We're not even going to let ourselves think that maybe the first week onward we'll get into it," Kohli said.## In recent times, England's pitches have flat up and high scores can be expected during the tournament. However, the Indian captain believes that despite the high scoring expectations, "scores of 260-270 can be defended".## "White-ball cricket, playing in England, playing an ICC tournament - the conditions are not that different or that difficult I would say, compared to Test cricket. The pressure is the most important thing in the World Cup, and not necessarily the conditions," Kohli said.## "Secondly, all the bowlers in the squad, even during the IPL they were bowling themselves to be in the zone for 50-over cricket. And we saw the guys bowling. No one looked tired or fatigued after bowling four overs. They were fresh. The ultimate goal is to be fit for the 50-over format and not let their fitness come down and that was communicated before the IPL," he added.## One of the main focus in the press conference was on intensity which can be difficult to maintain in 46-days long tournament but Kohli pointed to the football clubs who do the same over a ten-month league in a season.## "This is the challenge. If you look at all the top-class clubs in the world, like in football, they maintain their intensity for three-four months in the Premier League, or in the La Liga. So if we get on a roll and if we maintain consistency then we should be able to do it for the length of the tournament.## "The good thing is that every game has a decent gap between each other. From that point of view, I don't think that the players will burn out even if we have intense games. We will always have time to regroup and go for the next. So the best thing is that we'll have four tough games straight up and that will set the tone nicely for us."## In recently concluded Indian Premier League, one of India's key bowlers Kuldeep Yadav looked completely off-colour during the tournament and could manage to take only 4 wickets in 9 games he played. However, Kohli reiterated his faith in Kudeep and said he will be crucial in the middle overs along with Yuzvendra Chahal.## "Someone like Kuldeep, it is important to see a period where things don't go your way also. We are glad it happened during the IPL rather than happening during the World Cup. So Kuldeep has time to reflect, correct things and come into the World Cup even stronger. We know the kind of skill set he possesses along with Chahal. They are really two pillars of our bowling line-up," Kohli said.## There have been a lot of talks about the importance of MS Dhoni who is going to play probably his last World Cup. The former India captain looked in really good touch during the IPL and hence Indian coach Ravi Shastri believes that he will be crucial for India in World Cup.## "Mahendra Singh Dhoni is someone who'll be right there. His communication with Virat has been fantastic," Shastri said. "There is no one better than him when it comes to keeping and also dealing with those tight situations in matches. Former India captain and currently the coach of India A and U-19 team, Rahul Dravid heap praised senior team India captain Virat Kohli for taking his game to another level. Dravid credited Kohli for setting the bar to levels so high that were previously thought impossible.## Keep in mind, Virat Kohli is the fastest batsman to reach 10,000 runs in ODI cricket and also have 41 centuries. He is now just 8 centuries short from all-time leading century getter Sachin Tendulkar and hence, Dravid cited the rapid rate at which Kohli has been shattering records in the ODI format.## "Virat just keeps improving, keeps getting better. He is setting bars and standards that possibly we thought would never be achieved," he said. "Sachin scored 49-50 [49] hundreds in one-day cricket. People thought that this would take a lot of time to achieve, will it be ever achieved? And now Virat is 10 [eight] away from it or close to it.## The India A and U-19 coach also praised Kohli for coming out as a better player every time from the bad patches which have been the hallmark of Kohli's career so far.## "One of the things about Virat is that even if he has a bad tour - it is not that he hasn't had bad tours, he had a disappointing tour of England in 2014, he wasn't as successful in Australia the first time around, but every time he goes back, he goes back as a better player. The camaraderie between the Indian skipper Virat Kohli and his Royal Challengers Bangalore's teammate AB de Villiers is not a hidden secret now. Both have been involved in so many great partnerships while playing for the RCB in Indian Premier League and also both share a unique bond with each other.## De Villiers during a candid interview with Gaurav Kapur on his Youtube show ‘Breakfast with Champions’ opened up on his friendship with batting sensation Virat Kohli while revealing some interesting stories about their off-the-field chemistry. He revealed that the Indian skipper always treat his family and kids well despite disturbing him a lot.## “We are neighbours. If it wasn’t for the mosquitoes here, we would’ve left our doors open and probably would’ve shared a big room. Anushka’s here all the time, my family is there, the kids are running around. The kids were knocking on his door, early in the morning waking him up. He would let them in and would have coffee together. They were so good with the kids. We spent hours in the pool together, everyone just jumping and diving, and they’re so chilled," de Villiers said.## It is the bond between him and Kohli that made de Villiers call his RCB teammate a ‘ridiculous man’ only because Virat Kohli gifts him stuff whenever he (de Villiers) complains about a thing or two and said that he looks after everyone around him.## “I’m scared of saying anything to him now because. If I say like, “Oh, I like your shoes.” The next minute he organizes me those shoes. I’m like, “Virat, just stop it”. He looks after everyone. Well, the 35-year-old have some plans of playing international cricket as he said that he might return to the international circuit and participate in the 2023 World Cup if MS Dhoni was still around.## “How old will I be (in 2023)? 39! I’ll come back if MS is still around (laughs). If I’m still good enough, who knows eh? I was keen to play the World Cup (2019) but I retired, so it was a very sensitive situation. For the last 3 years of my career, I was labelled as a guy who was picking and choosing when I was playing and when not,” De Villiers said during a candid interview with Gaurav Kapur on his Youtube show ‘Breakfast with Champions’.## “So I got quite a lot of criticism from back home which also played a role in me retiring. And it was difficult for me to then go: ‘Hey, but I’ll still play the World Cup’. You know, it’s the picking and choosing thing again. And it’s quite arrogant to do something like that. But as they say, you can’t have your bread buttered on both sides,” added de Villiers. ## AB de Villiers, famously known as MR. 360 degree took retirement last year after playing his last Test match against Australia at the home soil. Though it was a sudden decision de Villiers said that there were numerous reasons which motivated him to take this decision.## “I’ve always been about the team. It’s never been about myself. But I found myself in a position where I had to make a decision where it’s going to look like I’m thinking about just myself. There’s a lot of reasons I had to move on. There’s a lot of things that played a role. Family is definitely a big part of it. The longevity of, like, I mean I’ve played for 15 years. I was just tired of the whole international scene. It’s quite busy, very stressful. The mental games, the doubts you have as a person, as a player all the time, it wears you down. And being captain of the Proteas for a long time also took its toll you know.”## “And then there are a few deeper issues that might have to be discussed when I’m 50 one day (laughs). There’s a part of me that’ll always miss it. I mean, I had so much fun. It’s everything that goes with it. I wish I could push on longer but like I said at the start I had a great run and more dreams came true than I could ever imagine. And there was lots of heartbreaks as well along the way. In the last couple of the years, India's bowling has gone through another level and is considered as one of the best in the world currently and Bhuvneshwar Kumar is one of India pace attacks who have played an important role in that transition.## Bhuvneshwar Kumar is one of the seven players in India's current World Cup squad who were part of the World Cup 2015 in Australia and New Zealand where India reached to the semi-final. To bring that experience, he is supposed to play an important role in the upcoming edition of the World Cup in England and Wales. In an exclusive chat with TOI, he spoke about the challenges in the upcoming World Cup, the experience of bowling with Bumrah and Shami, the role of IPL in preparation for the World Cup and many more.## Excerpts:## This will be your second ODI World Cup. How have you evolved as a bowler since the last World Cup in 2015?## There has definitely been an improvement in my bowling in terms of pace and variations like the slower ball and knuckleball. To add to that, I have improved fitness-wise.## With the likes of Shami and Bumrah for company, do you feel this is India's best ever pace attack?## I don't want to comment on whether we are the best or not because our performance on the field is what will define our attack. Our performances over the last few years speak for us. The Indian bowling attack has grown from strength to strength. Today, we can say that our pace attack can make an impact on any surface.## How do you see your competition with Shami and Bumrah who have done well recently? Do you reckon you have work to do to catch up with them when it comes to getting the nod for the first XI?## Each one of us has our own strengths that we bring to the bowling unit. It is always a good thing that whoever is getting a chance in the playing XI has been performing well. As a bowling unit - we back ourselves to do well in any conditions.## You have been hit by injuries in the last 12 months and missed a lot of cricket. Has it taken a toll on your bowling?## Injuries are part and parcel of a player's career. When you are injured and are undergoing rehabilitation, it is important to stay positive and not allow negative thoughts to creep in. During those times that you are away from the game, it is important to work harder and come back stronger.## Your ability to bowl at the death overs remains one of your major plus points. Do you feel you have struggled to match up to those high standards in recent times?## I don't think so. If you see in the last few games of the IPL for Sunrisers Hyderabad - I was able to execute my plans and that's a very good sign. I am happy with the way things are going at the moment.## Do you feel IPL was the right kind of preparation before the World Cup?## IPL has definitely given players the much-needed match practice before the World Cup. Once you have wickets and runs under your belt, the confidence levels automatically go up. For me, it was important to be in a good rhythm and be among wickets which I was able to do for Sunrisers Hyderabad.## What's your take as a player when it comes to workload management for those featuring in the World Cup?## I think each player is aware of what he needs to do to be in the best shape for the World Cup. The IPL gave players crucial time on the field playing competitive cricket that should stand them in good stead ahead for the big event.## With pitches in England becoming flattered over the years, how do you assess Indian bowlers' chances in the World Cup?## I agree that pitches in England in the last few years have been flat, but teams will be wary of India's bowling unit since we can be potent both at the start and at the death. It will all boil down to how we execute the plans on the given day.## Going to the World Cup, who do you think are the most difficult batsmen to bowl to?## Going by IPL, Andre Russell was superb while my SRH teammate - David Warner - too was in great touch. Another season of Indian Premier League is just one match away from reaching to its conclusion. The final is set to take place on Sunday (May 12) at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad between the two most successful teams of the IPL history and three times champions each, Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians.## Here is our team of the tournament:## 1. David Warner (SRH)## It has been a quite emotional season for the Australian left-hander who was making his comeback after missing out the previous season due to the Newlands' ball-tampering scandal last year. But he returned and returned with a bang. Smashing 692 runs in 12 innings with an average of 69.20 and strike rate of 143.87 including a century and 8 fifties. This year, he paired with England's Jonny Bairstow and both were quite sensational together. Even in 2017, Warner was the highest run-getter of the tournament with 641 runs 14 innings.## 2. KL Rahul (KXIP)## After getting a slow start in the first few matches, KL Rahul really took off and saw his 2018 version after that. Despite Kings XI Punjab not making to the playoffs just like the previous season, Rahul has had an impressive season with the bat. He smashed 593 runs in 14 innings with an average of 53.91 and strike rate of 135.38. He managed to get those runs with the help of a century and 6 half-centuries.## 3. Shreyas Iyer (DC)## It's been a landmark year for Shreyas Iyer not only as a batsman but also as a captain. Under Shreyas Iyer's captaincy, Delhi Capitals reached to the playoffs for the first time since 2012. However, he couldn't take DC to its first final but did remarkably well to take a young side to thus far. He impressed with the bat as well and smashed 463 runs in 16 innings with an average of 30.86 and hit 3 fifties.## 4. Rishabh Pant (DC)## The 21-year old may have not matured enough but had won Delhi Capitals 3 or 4 matches singlehandedly. The second highest run-getter of 2018, Rishabh Pant smashed the second fastest fifty (18 balls) of the tournament. Pant scored 488 runs in 16 innings with the thunderous strike rate of 162.66.## 5. Andre Russell (KKR)## Not many have the power of winning the game from the almost dead situation unless he is Andre Russell. The IPL 2019 will be remembered for Russell's brutal striking. The big man from West Indies was in different zone throughout the season and made 510 runs in 13 innings with the strike rate of 204.81. In first few matches, his scores were 49* off 19 balls vs SRH, 48 off 17 balls vs KXIP, 62 off 28 balls vs DC, 48* off 13 balls vs RCB. Quite unimaginable!## 6. MS Dhoni (CSK)## When it comes to finishing the game, no one knows better than MS Dhoni how to do that. Against Royal Challengers Bangalore when CSK needed 26 to win off the last 6 balls, Dhoni nearly did something unthinkable as CSK remained just two runs short of the target. Well, on the bigger note, CSK will play its 8th final out of the 10 seasons they played and the skipper played an important role in that with 414 runs in 11 innings with an average of 103.50 and strike rate of 137.54.## 7. Hardik Pandya (MI)## One of Mumbai Indians' key players Hardik Pandya has emerged as the genuine all-rounder this season. He seems to be the only competitor of Andre Russell in terms of the strike rate. His best effort came against Kolkata Knight Riders when he blasted 91 off 34 balls in chasing 233. However, Mumbai Indians couldn't cross the line but by then, Pandya has already played one of the best knocks in IPL history. He has scored 386 runs in 14 innings with the strike rate of 193 and also been impressive with his bowling as well and picked 14 wickets in 15 matches.## 8. Shreyas Gopal (RR)## The only bowler to take the wickets of Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers in the same innings on three occasions, Shreyas Gopal has been the biggest positive for Rajasthan Royals this year. He is also the contender of the emerging player of the tournament. In 14 matches, Gopal picked 20 wickets including the hat-trick against RCB.## 9. Imran Tahir (CSK)## With one of the trademark celebrations after taking the wicket, Imran Tahir has played an important role in CSK's success this year. His economy rate (6.65) has been one of the best in IPL 2019. In 16 matches so far, Tahir has picked 24 wickets and only behind his fellow countryman Kagiso Rabada.## 10. Kagiso Rabada (DC)## The champion bowler from South Africa is the leading wicket-taker with 25 wickets in 12 matches. The world saw his brilliance when he defended 10 runs against the likes of Russell in the super over. However, an injury ended his memorable season with DC but he ensured that DC reached to the playoffs for the first time since 2012.## 11. Jasprit Bumrah (MI)## No playing XI is complete without Jasprit Bumrah who's brilliance with new balls as well as in the death is unbelievable. Indian Premier League 2019 has come into its last week. With a lot of entertainment in the last one and a half month, the 12th edition of the tournament has emerged one of the best in its history. There have been so many great performances in this period that make this tournament a successful one.## IPL is all about emerging young talents. It is the platform where young players showcase their skills and talent they possess. The 12th edition is no different from that where young players compete with big ones and impressed everyone with their performances.## Here we will take the list of five Indian players who have impressed and showed the skills of competing with the world's best players on the biggest stage.## 1. Riyan Parag (RR) - Riyan Parag is just a 17-year old from Guwahati, Assam (India). There is something about the right-hand batting all-rounder that makes him a watch me out player. His calmness and maturity he has shown under pressure, speak for him. One of the stars in India's U-19 World Cup triumph last year, Parag became the youngest player in IPL history to struck his maiden fifty. They did rectify their error and give him chance to open the innings and he didn't let them down. In 13 innings of 14 matches, Gill has scored 296 runs with an average of 32.88. The 19-year old Firozpur, Punjab has the potential to become the next big thing in Indian cricket.## 3. Shreyas Gopal (RR) - Well, in the era of wrist spinners Shreyas Gopal is another edition in that list. He is has had a dream season where he finished on 3rd in the leading wicket-takers of the tournament (excluding playoff matches) with 20 wickets in 14 matches. He is one of the only few bowlers to take Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers' wicket in the same innings and he has done that on three occasions.## 4. Khaleel Ahmed (SRH) - Khaleel Ahmed's strength is the pace and accuracy. Currently, he is probably the best left-arm pacer in India. He has already taken 17 wickets 8 matches so far in IPL 2019. The 21-year old from Tonk, Rajasthan, Khaleel Ahmed was the member of India squad of U-19 World Cup 2016. Though he has had an ordinary tournament but did enough to make it to the Indian Premier League 2018. He is one of the main contenders for the emerging player award this time around.## 5. Pathan's 100 off 37 balls in Mumbai in 2010 was a remarkable achievement considering his team were floundering in a chase of 213. When he came to the crease, Kings XI Punjab was needed 140 in 12.2 overs but his destructive knock of 101 off 38 balls actually finished the game with two overs to spare.## 4. Adam Gilchrist (42 balls, DC vs MI, 2008)## To chased down 154 against Mumbai Indians at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, Adam Gilchrist needed just 12 overs to breeze past the home side. He hit 10 sixes and 9 fours in his knock of 109 off 47 balls which is the 4th fastest century in the history of the Indian Premier League.## 5. AB de Villiers (43 balls, RCB vs GL, 2016)## There are a few batsmen who look as exciting as AB de Villiers when in full flow. His ability to play the shots all-around the park makes the most dangerous batsman in T20 cricket. In 2016, against the Gujrat Lions, AB de Villiers smashed 129 off 52-balls.
