Kathak's Living Legend, Pandit Birju Maharaj, Dies At 83 (Ld)

New Delhi, Jan 17 (IANS) The living legend of Kathak, Birju Maharaj, who had been diagnosed with kidney disease a few days ago and put on dialysis, died at his home here late on Sunday. He was 83.## Maharaj Ji, as he was popularly known, was said to be playing with his grandsons when his health unexpectedly deteriorated, requiring him to be rushed to the hospital, where he died of a heart attack.## A recipient of the country's second-highest civilian honor, Padma Vibhushan, Maharaj Ji was also a lifelong Kathak guru as well as a talented Hindustani classical singer and percussionist.## He will be remembered by cinema buffs for the two-period dance sequences in Satyajit Ray's historical drama 'Shatranj Ke Khiladi' (for which he sang as well) and for the 'Kaahe Chhed Mohe' track picturized on Madhuri Dixit in the 2002 version of 'Devdas'.## Maharaj Ji won the National Award for choreographing 'Unnai Kaanadhu Naan' in the Kamal Haasan multi-lingual megahit 'Vishwaroopam' and the Filmfare Awards for the Bajirao Mastani number 'Mohe Rang Do Laal'.## Adnan Sami, one of the first artistes to pay his tributes to the doyen of Kathak, said in a tweet: "Extremely saddened by the news about the passing away of Legendary Kathak Dancer Pandit Birju Maharaj ji. We have lost an unparalleled institution in the field of the performing arts. He has influenced many generations through his genius. May he rest in peace".## Another early tribute came from Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, who tweeted: "Pandit Birju ji Maharaj was a doyen of India's art and culture. He popularised the Lucknow gharana of Kathak dance form around the world. ... His passing away is a monumental loss to the world of performing arts".## Birju Maharaj was the son of the exponent of the Lucknow gharana, Jagannath Maharaj, better known as Acchan Maharaj, whom he lost when he was just nine. His uncles were the renowned Shambhu Maharaj and Lacchu Maharaj.## He taught at the Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Kathak Kendra, both in Delhi, from where he retired as director in 1998.## Stay tuned...

David Guetta predicts a bright future for dance music

Los Angeles, Dec 28 (IANS) French DJ David Guetta believes that the coming years will be the "best years for dance music in history" as clubbers return to partying following the pandemic. ## Guetta told the Evening Standard: "I think it is part of human nature to take things for granted after a while. ## "I think people were taking life the way it was for granted. After Covid, parties are now actually insane. It's a whole different thing, when we get on stage it is a madhouse. I think the next few years will be the best years for dance music in history." ## The superstar DJ shared that some of his biggest hits have been released in times of global unrest and believes that the public like to seek escapism through the medium of dance music, reports femalefirst.co.uk. ## He said: "Every time there is a big crisis, it is good for dance music. People just need to forget everything and have a good time and let go and dance. ## "As a music producer, my experience shows me that the biggest hits that I have had in my career - the biggest hit was 'I Gotta Feeling' (with the Black Eyed Peas) and that was in the middle of the financial crisis." ## The French DJ continued: "With Covid, dance music was not hot anymore, but now it's back so strong. I think there is a connection with people going through crisis and the need of gathering together and forgetting about everything." ## Guetta has worked with some of music's biggest stars but has revealed that he is desperate for a collaboration with Adele. ## The 'When Love Takes Over' hitmaker shared: "I have a dream of making a record with Adele. V Unbeatable is coming up with their dance studio

Mumbai, March 15 (IANS) After creating waves with their moves on the stage of "America's Got Talent: The Champions", Mumbai-based dance group V Unbeatable, who won the second season of the reality show, are coming with their own dance studio. ## "The big thing is studio is a part of our dream, and we are gonna start diploma courses and also teach many styles like hip hop urban and contemporary, Bollywood and many styles," Om Prakash, founder of the dance group, said. ## He added: "Purpose of it is to (t)each young talents and dance aspirants and help reach to that level." ## In the upcoming studio, they will be training and teaching myriad kind of dance forms to the aspirants. ## V Unbeatable comprises 28 members aged between 12-27. ## For more and the latest news about Bollywood, stay tuned to us.
