Chennai, May 21, 2021: Ever since the trailer of Amazon Prime Video's new web series, "The Family Man 2" has released, it is receiving backlash from the Tamil community for allegedly portraying Tamil people as terrorists in the show. ## Even though Amazon Prime Video has edited the trailer, the controversy around the web series is certainly becoming a big issue with political parties has also started jumping into the matter. After getting calls for a ban on the series on social media, the founder of Tamil Nadu's third-largest party in the recently concluded elections, Seeman, on Friday, demanded calling off the series. ## According to a statement issued by Seeman (via India TV), the politician said that the trailer of the web series 'The Family Man 2' is shocking as it portrays Tamils as vicious and the Liberation Tiger for Tamil Eelam (LTTE) as terrorists. ## "The series seeks to intentionally portray the LTTE as terrorists and Tamils as vicious people. It is no coincidence that Chennai has been chosen as the location", Seeman said and according to him, the web series story revolves around an Eelam - in Sri Lanka- a woman who is portrayed as a militant.## "In a situation where 2 lakh Tamils in Eelam have been slaughtered by the tyranny of Sinhala chauvinism, the attempt to portray the Tamils as terrorists through a web series that stand as the greatest democrats and seeking justice in the international forums through moral and legal struggle is highly condemnable", Seeman continued.## As shown in the trailer, South Indian actress, Samantha Akkineni portrays one of the highly-trained rebels, Raji, in the show. She is a part of Tamil rebels (they're just called Tamil rebels), who joined hands with a dangerous terrorist organization, ISIS, to unleash an attack on India.## Seeman said that Tamils all over the world have been registering their condemnation with great anger. Urging the web series be banned, adding that the films such as "Inam" and "Madras Cafe" that portray Tamils in a wrong manner were refrained from screening in theatres due to widespread opposition. ## The Family Man 2 is created and directed by the famous director duo Raj & DK. It was a move, many expected, will bring the change of releasing movies going forward. ## However, since the pay-per-view model is completely new to the Indian audience, especially for the masses, people are wondering whether this move did benefit ZeePlex, which is the primary partner of Radhe. According to data shared by Zee, Radhe gained a massive number of views, around 4.2 million or approx Rs. 105 crores, on day 1. ## However, trade analysts believe that the pay-per-view model is impractical, given rampant piracy. According to Shailesh Kapoor of Ormax Media, which specializes in media research and tracking, a "Radhe" like the film is expected to get at least 30 million lifetime views, which is looking unlikely in this case. He also said that the pay-per-view model is premature in India to give a try. ## "Our estimates suggest that about eight to 10 million have viewed the film, with four million having watched it on the first day. But to gauge whether the pay-per-view model is sustainable, using Radhe as an example, is premature. The film hasn't been appreciated. One would expect a film like this to get 30 million lifetime views. Laxmmi got about 20 million views. But that movie had the benefit of being on Disney+Hotstar, whose viewership is four times that of any other platform", Shailesh Kapoor, according to mid-day. ## It is not necessary to say that piracy has been a big issue in India. Most of the films get leaked on pirated sites which does affect the lifetime views of a film. Chinese Canadian actor Ludi Lin, who plays Liu Kang in the Warner Bros. Amid the OTT giants, Disney's video-on-demand streaming service, Disney Plus, emerged as a winner. ## Disney+, which had just 33 million paid subscribers in April 2020, gained more than a whopping 70 million paid subscribers since then. The streaming giant currently has 103.60 million global subscribers, according to the company's Q2 earnings report. ## While the current number of Disney Plus' subscribers fell just short of Wall Street's consensus of 110 million subscribers, the company has already achieved surpassed its original target well before in time. When Disney+ first debuted in November 2019, the company set a target of 60 to 90 million subscribers by 2024, a milestone, Disney+ achieved before the end of 2020.## The platform now expects to have 230 to 260 million subscribers worldwide by 2024, which will see Disney+ surpassing Netflix, which currently has 208 million paid subscribers. Disney+ launched at the same time as Apple TV+, but it has grown much more rapidly given the available back catalog of Disney, Marvel, and Star Wars content.## Meanwhile, on the other hand, The Walt Disney Co. delivered mixed results in its earnings.
