'House of the Dragon' Breaks HBO Viewership Records For Series Premiere

Los Angeles, August 23 - The prequel series of HBO's global hit "Game of Thrones" - House of the Dragon takes domestic viewership by storm. The first episode of the series premiered on August 21 and becomes the most-watched HBO and HBO Max premiere episode for any series. ## The fantasy drama series based on the A Song of Ice and Fire novels by George R. R. Martin began with a record 10 million viewers watching it on Sunday in the US, according to Warner Bros. Discovery. The company hasn't released the global stats yet. ## The "House of the Dragon's" 10-million viewership is more than double of the previous HBO record holder "Game of Thrones", which premiered with 4.2 million viewers exclusively on HBO in 2011. It has been reported that the HBO site got crashed upon the premiere of "House of the Dragon". ## Meanwhile, according to Samba TV, which independently measures terrestrial smart TVs, 2.6 million US households watched the prequel series during the first six hours after the episode's 9 p.m. ET premiere Sunday. That gave the Game of Thrones prequel the highest premiere-day viewership across cable and streaming so far this year, outperforming Netflix's global hit Stranger Things Season 4 same-day numbers of 1.2 million US households. ## Samba TV co-founder and CEO Ashwin Navin said (via comicbook), "HBO has once again tapped into the magic of Game of Thrones with its spinoff series, House of the Dragon. Diehard GoT fans have been eagerly anticipating more from the franchise and they turned out in force for House of the Dragon, with the HBO program generating the biggest single-day premium cable or streaming viewership premiere in 2022". ## Based on parts of the novel Fire & Blood, the series is set about 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones. It portrays the beginning of the end of House Targaryen, the events leading up to and covering the Targaryen war of succession, known as the "Dance of the Dragons".## Stay tuned...

Peter Dinklage: Don't Try To Recreate 'Game of Thrones'

Los Angeles, Jan 10 (IANS) Actor Peter Dinklage, who played the part of Tyrion Lannister in the hit TV series "Game of Thrones", has warned HBO about the potential pitfalls facing the makers of 'House of the Dragon', the upcoming prequel show.## The 52-year-old actor explained: "I think the trick is not to try to recreate 'Thrones'. If you try to recreate it, that feels like a money grab. With a lot of sequels, the reason for them is that the first one made a lot of money, which is why they aren't as strong.## He added: "But I am excited to watch the 'House of the Dragon', purely as a viewer, not knowing what will happen next".## 'Game of Thrones' came to an end in 2019 and although some viewers were disappointed by the finale, the actor suggested that their frustration was over the top, reports femalefirst.co.uk.## He told The Independent: "People were just mad because nobody wanted it to be over. I know a lot of people were supposedly surprised by the ending, but if you paid attention, the clues were there".## In December, Dinklage called on 'Game of Throne' fans to "move on" from the show's finale. The actor urged viewers to rethink their criticisms of the much-maligned final season.## He said: "They wanted the pretty white people to ride off into the sunset together. By the way, it's fiction. There are dragons in it. Move on".## He also likened the show's conclusion to a break-up.## He explained: "I think the reason there was some backlash about the ending is because they were angry at us for breaking up with them.## "We were going off the air and they didn't know what to do with their Sunday nights anymore. They wanted more, so they backlashed about that. We had to end when we did because what the show was really good at was breaking preconceived notions: Villains became heroes, and heroes became villains.## "It was the right time. No less, no more. You don't want to wear out your welcome, although I'm not sure that show could have".## Stay tuned...

Peter Dinklage: People should move on from 'Game of Thrones' finale

Los Angeles, Dec 24 (IANS) Actor Peter Dinklage wants people to "move on" from the 'Game of Thrones' finale, as he believes the series did a good job of "subverting" people's expectations. ## A Change.org petition was launched when the show wrapped calling for a re-do, but Dinklage says people just wanted to see "the pretty white people" have a happy ending, reports femalefirst.co.uk. ## He said: "They wanted the pretty white people to ride off into the sunset together. By the way, it's fiction. There's dragons in it. Move on." ## The 'Cyrano' actor also said the fantasy series was good at "subverting" viewer expectations, and said he particularly liked the scenes in which a dragon burned the iron throne - as it signalled that no-one would be crowned King or Queen of Westeros at the end of the series. ## He added: "No, but the show subverts what you think, and that's what I love about it. Yeah, it was called 'Game of Thrones', but at the end, the whole dialogue when people would approach me on the street was, 'Who's going to be on the throne?'. I don't know why that was their takeaway because the show really was more than that. ## "One of my favourite moments was when the dragon burned the throne because it sort of just killed that whole conversation, which is really irreverent and kind of brilliant on behalf of the show's creators: 'Shut up, it's not about that.' ## "They constantly did that, where you thought one thing and they delivered another. Everybody had their own stories going on while watching that show, but nobody's was as good as what the show delivered, I think." ## The actor thinks the main reason people were unhappy with the ending of the show was because they didn't like the idea of the drama no longer being on air. ## He told The New York Times: "I think the reason there was some backlash about the ending is because they were angry at us for breaking up with them. ## "We were going off the air and they didn't know what to do with their Sunday nights anymore. They wanted more, so they backlashed about that. We had to end when we did, because what the show was really good at was breaking preconceived notions: Villains became heroes, and heroes became villains. ## "It was the right time. No less, no more.
