Madan Lal Unspools His Memories of Kapil Dev's Historic 175 n.o.

New Delhi, Dec 26 (IANS) Madan Lal, who was a member of the 1983 World Cup-winning team and took three crucial wickets in the final, on Saturday showered praise on director Kabir Khan for "doing justice" to each character in '83', and recounted the day when he got to see Kapil Dev's game-changing unbeaten 175 at Tunbridge Wells from the non-striker's end.## Talking about Harrdy Sandhu, the Punjabi actor-singer who plays him in '83', Madan Lal said he was brilliant in the movie.## "The movie is fantastic. Kabir Khan did a brilliant job. Every character in the movie was of equal importance. It was like reliving the moment. Everything shown in it was actually what happened," Madan Lal said.## He told IANS: "Kapil Dev's 175 was also exactly as portrayed. I know it because I was on the non-striker's end when I saw the 'Haryana Hurricane' in action at Tunbridge Wells."## Playing against Zimbabwe, the legendary Indian all-rounder walked in to bat when India was reeling at 17 for 5, with Sunil Gavaskar and Kris Srikkanth both scoring ducks. Kapil smashed 175 off just 138 balls with six sixes and 16 fours -- his top score in ODIs as India scored 266/8.## "The innings did not get recorded, but I can assure you that whatever is shown in the movie is exactly as it happened," said the all-rounder-turned-cricket coach and media analyst, who scored 17 runs off 39 balls and scalped three wickets that day.## Madan Lal became the toast of India for his three-wicket haul in the final of the 1983 World Cup against the then mighty West Indies. He, in fact, had a brilliant outing in 1983, as he notched up 17 wickets in eight matches.## But he saved his best for the final, where he accounted for the wickets of Desmond Haynes, Vivian Richards, and Larry Gomes. The dismissal of the dangerous Richards proved to be the turning point in India's road to victory.## Stay tuned...

It took Ranveer Singh six months to perfect Kapil Dev's famous catch

New Delhi, Dec 25 (IANS) Bollywood sensation Ranveer Singh, who is getting love and appreciation from cricket and cinema fans alike for portraying Kapil Dev in '83', has revealed that it took him six months to perfect that famous backward-running catch, which was taken by the legendary cricketer to dismiss Sir Viv Richards off a Madan Lal delivery on June 25, 1983. ## '83' got a bumper opening at the box-office. And the Bollywood heartthrob is in awe after getting such a positive response from fans, and the "love and respect" that is being showered on the film from across the world. ## Ranveer was in the national capital for the screening of '83' and IANS got the opportunity to speak to him. For the film, the versatile actor has stepped into the shoes of the legendary Indian captain and one of the greatest all-rounders, Kapil Dev. ## The acclaimed actor is a shape-shifter who can perform any role with the same grace. From 'Bajirao', 'Padmavat', 'Simmba' and 'Gully Boy' to now '83', he has played diverse characters without any reference point whatsoever and has delivered the best performances. He has made his place as one of the best actors in the history of Indian cinema. ## "Ranveer is not imitating Kapil, he is inhabiting [the character]." This message has been reverberating across social media, with netizens going gaga over his performance in '83'. ## "I am overwhelmed with the kind of messages I am getting right now. Everybody is liking the movie - Sunil Gavaskar sir, Madan Lal sir, Kapil sir, my guru Balwinder Singh Sandhu sir, PR Man Singh sir all have messaged and praised my work. What else do you want when such great personalities appreciate your work," an emotional Ranveer told IANS. ## The actor recalled the making of the film. He shared how Kabir Khan proposed the idea of inviting Kapil Dev and asking him to spend some time with the actor. ## "I spent some time with Kapil sir in his house and he has such an impressive aura that people will fall in love with him. His smile, his laugh, his walk, his talk, his dance ... yeah, he has such cute dance moves. I used to see what he was doing and what's going on in his mind. What he might be thinking at that time in 1983. Watching him so closely helped a lot," Ranveer said. ## Asked what was the toughest part to learn, Kapil's bowling style, his attitude or batting? The actor replied: "I used to play cricket in my school days and I was a very aggressive and impressive batter, also a good fielder. So batting wasn't an issue. About acting, we are professionals, so that's our job to get into the character. ## "Yes, bowling was the toughest thing to learn. It took me several months … his wrist position, his iconic jump, rubbing the ball on the chest before delivering it, I remember Sandhu sir used to say, 'Tickle the nipple, tickle the nipple'," laughed Ranveer. ## "Actually, my biomechanics differ from Kapil sir's. I was coming from 'Simmba' (the movie) and had bulky muscles. So Sandhu sir told me to get into an athletic physique," he added. ## Quizzed about whether he finally managed to get some of the speed and outswing like the legendary all-rounder, Ranveer said, "Bahut stumps udaye maine fir to (I dislodged many stumps then). I can't say about the swing, but I was bowling really well, hitting the wicket." ## Ranveer also shared his struggles to match Kapil Dev's famous backward-running catch to dismiss Sir Viv Richards, which clinched India's win in the nail-biter of a final at Lord's. ## "It took me six months to get it perfectly done. The catch was tough running backward. So, Sandhu sir used to throw the ball and I had to run and take it," he said. Asked if it was a leather ball or not? Ranveer replied, "Yeah, it was a leather ball only." ## He added: "I practised it several times and Sandhu sir then used to give me six overs to bat as a consolation prize, which I loved the most. I was given a target and I have to chase it down. It was fun," he added. ## Kapil's innings of 175 against Zimbabwe didn't get recorded because the BBC staff were on strike that day. How tough was it to learn about the minutiae of the great innings? ## "It was no doubt difficult because there was no video recording of it. And I at the same time feel bad for Kapil sir. It was one of the best innings in cricket history. And now people, only after watching the movie, are appreciating the scene and figuring out how it was done at that time," Ranveer concluded. ## Stay Tuned To Sacnilk For More Such Updates.

Neena Gupta, Kapil Dev make surprise appearances in '83'

Mumbai, Dec 24 (IANS) Actress Neena Gupta essays the part of Kapil Dev's mother Rajkumari Lal Nikhanj in '83'. Ironically, the father of her daughter, Sir Viv Richards, was Kapil's bete noir at the 1983 World Cup. ## The film has another surprise in it: Kapil Dev makes a cameo appearance as a member of the audience who picks up the ball after a cracker of a shot by Ranveer Singh, who plays the cricket legend in the film. The character played by Kapil exclaims: "Good shot, Kapil!" ## The Indian cricket team, spearheaded by Kapil Dev, squared off against the mighty West Indies in the 1983 World Cup finals. Neena Gupta dated Sir Viv, the West Indies batting legend, who was a member of the 1983 Carribean squad led by Sir Clive Lloyd, which was then considered invincible, having won the first two World Cups. ## In the finals, Sir Viv scored 33 runs from 28 balls with a strike rate of 117.85 before he was caught dramatically by Kapil on a Madan Lal delivery. Earlier, when India was playing, he proved expensive with the ball -- conceding eight runs in the one and only over he bowled. ## Neena Gupta and Sir Viv started dating in the late 1980s and their daughter, Masaba Gupta, is one of India's leading couturiers and also an actor who made her debut with the Netflix original, 'Masaba Masaba'. ## Neena completed her part of shooting for the film back in December 2019. ## Stay Tuned To Sacnilk For More Such Updates.

Playing Madan Lal's wife, who conceived during the 1983 World Cup

Mumbai, Dec 24 (IANS) As much as "83" presents the story of what went on in the field and the dressing room, it also offers a peek into the lives of the players off the field in their personal spaces. ## Just as Deepika Padukone essays the role of Romi Dev, wife of the 1983 World Cup-winning squad's captain, Kapil Dev, multi-lingual actress Wamiqa Gabbi steps into the shoes of Anu Lal, wife of Madan Lal, the medium pacer from Delhi who took three crucial wickets in that historic final. Gabbi's fellow Punjabi actor, Harrdy Sandhu, plays Madan Lal. ## Wamiqa recently spoke to IANS about her association with the film, director Kabir Khan's briefing to her about the part and what the film means to her. Excerpts from the interview. ## Recollecting how she became a part of the film, the actress said: "I remember getting a call from the office of Mukesh Chhabra (the casting director of '83'). They wanted to come and have a word with me. That's when I met them and was convinced at the very first meeting that I wanted to do this part because it was Kabir Khan and the film was about the 1983 Cricket World Cup. It is a historic event!" ## About her pitching for the character, she said: "I was very nervous about playing Anu Lal and I wanted to portray her in the most natural way possible so that people can resonate with the character. I wanted to portray the emotions correctly and I hope people will like what I did." Anu Lal, incidentally, is from the Mohan Meakin family. ## Sharing Kabir Khan's brief to her, Wamiqa said: "The wives of the cricketers appear for a very brief time in the film. He (Khan) explained to me the situation and how this cricketer's wife must be feeling about her husband. It was not just a brief for my character. The film is such that once I heard about what all happened during the World Cup, I automatically understood the situation and acted accordingly." ## She revealed one of the key moments of the story. "This was part of my back story. Anu Lal conceived her first child during the 1983 World Cup and that was big for me," Wamiqa said. "I was like, as a woman she must be feeling so vulnerable, that's the reason you'll see Anu Lal being very vulnerable in the film. These small bits of information about the character really helped." ## Asked what this film means to her career prospects, Wamiqa had an emotional answer. "Well, this film is a celebration of the 1983 World Cup. It's a very special film to me. I didn't think of this film as something that is going to help me in my career. I wanted to do this film, I wanted to be a part of this film because of its content, the message that it was trying to convey and celebrate." ## She added: "The kind of work that I am doing in the future, that's the kind of work that will set the bar audience expectations. '83' is a very special film. I have done this film for completely different reasons and I am so proud to be a part of it. There is nothing else, there is no other reason for me to be a part of '83'." ## Stay Tuned To Sacnilk For More Such Updates.

IANS Review: '83' delivers an unforgettable experience (IANS Rating: ****)

Film: '83' (Showing in theatres); Duration: 163 minutes. ## Director: Kabir Khan. Cast: Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone, Pankaj Tripathi, Tahir Raj Bhasin, Saqib Saleem, Neena Gupta, Boman Irani, Ammy Virk, Chirag Patil, Dinker Sharma, Nishant Dahiya, Harrdy Sandhu, Sahil Khattar, Adinath Kothare and Dhairya Karwa. ## IANS Rating: **** ## New Delhi, Dec 24 (IANS) Director Kabir Khan's ‘83' is a recreation of a momentous event - the Indian cricket team's first-ever World Cup victory in 1983. Despite being predictable, the film offers an exhilarating and occasionally touching experience that has viewers leaving the auditorium caught up in an afterglow of excited patriotism. ## The film mounted like a brilliantly restored or recreated documentary, captures the three and a half months of - 'the may or may not win' drama, where the actors and few of the actual players seamlessly weave in and out of the narrative. ## The film focuses only on cricket and has everything that cricket fans could have possibly hoped for. The narrative- highlights and flashes the crucial matches and the moments in-between them, bringing back memories to the big screen after nearly 38 years. ## As you are transported back in time, you witness how the 'underdog' Indian team was treated with disdain, and despite all odds, how they emerged as winners. It is invigorating to witness the matches once again and your mood swings like Kapil's bat. You cheer for him when he creates history with a fabulous 175- not out against the Zimbabwe team, and your blood boils when you realise that the legendary game was not recorded on camera because BBC did not think it was important enough. ## What you see on screen is Kapil's charisma, the locker-room banter, the occasional tension and problematic behaviour between the teammates, the strategy they planned during the matches and above all, the anguish and thrills of the matches played during that unforgettable summer. ## Casting is another aspect of the film that could not have been better either. Ranveer with his prosthetic dentures- oddly resembles Kapil Dev, but he slips into his shoes effortlessly delivering a brilliant performance that tugs at the heartstrings. While he emulates the captain of the team, Saqib Saleem plays Mohinder Amarnath, Tahir Raj Bhasin essays Sunil Gavaskar, Jatin Sarna is Yashpal Sharma, Jiiva is K. Srikkanth, Harrdy Sandhu is Madan Lal, Nishant Dahiya is Roger Binny, Ammy Virk plays Balwinder Sandhu, Addinath Kothare is Dilip Vengsakar, Dhairya Karwa is Ravi Shastri, Chirag Patil is Sandip Patil. ## Boman Irani as the commentator Farrokh Engineer, Pankaj Tripathi as PR Man Singh, Neena Gupta as Kapil's caring and supportive mother, and Deepika Padukone as Kapil's wife Romi have their moments of on-screen glory. ## The film is astutely mounted, with ace production values. ## Overall, the narrative - like most of Kabir Khan's films - is unabashedly manipulative, but this one delivers a cinema experience one won't be able to forget about anytime soon. ## Stay Tuned To Sacnilk For More Such Updates.

Moved by Saqib's performance, Jimmy Amarnath gifts him his famous red hanky

Mumbai, Dec 23 (IANS) Moved by the performance of Saqib Saleem in '83', the man he plays in the film, 1983 World Cup final Man of the Match, Mohinder 'Jimmy' Amarnath, gifted the young actor the red handkerchief that he always carried with him as his good luck charm. ## This happened immediately after the special screening of the film late on Wednesday night in Mumbai.## Mohinder Amarnath, interestingly, plays his father, Lala Amarnath Bharadwaj, the first Indian to score a century in Test cricket. Amarnath Sr, whom many remember for his expert comments during the early days of cricket telecasts, also never failed to carry a red handkerchief whenever he would step onto the field or make a public appearance.## After making his debut as a quick-bowling all-rounder against Australia in Chennai in December 1969, Mohinder Amarnath got promoted as a top-order batsman, playing mainly at No. 3, and soon won the admiration of the pace bowlers faced, mainly Pakistan's Imran Khan and Malcolm Marshall of West Indies.## In the 1983 World Cup final, Amarnath's batting against the fierce pace attack of West Indies brought some respite for the Indian side as he gave some much needed stability. He stood at the crease facing 80 balls and scored 26 runs.## After a dismal batting performance, India's chances to win the Cup were written off. The team, however, turned around the game with its bowling attack. They leveraged the weather and pitch conditions, limiting West Indies to just 140 runs. ## Both Amarnath and Madan Lal were the joint highest wicket-takers, having picked up three wickets each, Amarnath giving away just 12 runs in seven overs. Quite naturally, he was declared Man of the Match. And as vice-captain of the team, he got to lift the World Cup in the historic photograph along with Kapil Dev. ## Currently, the veteran cricketer often goes behind the mic for the Hindi commentary. He also has two brothers, Surinder Amarnath, who is a former Test player having played for India, and Rajinder Amarnath, who is a former first class cricketer. ## Stay Tuned To Sacnilk For Such Updates.

Harrdy Sandhu: We Want Our Audience To Enjoy Every Second Of '83' Film

Mumbai, September 7, 2021: Ranveer Singh-led biographical sports drama film, "83" is one of the most-awaited Hindi films of the year. Directed by Kabir Khan, "83" has an ensemble cast including Punjabi singer-actor, Harrdy Sandhu, who will be seen portraying the role of former cricketer Madan Lal. ## Sandhu, who played cricket for over a decade as a fast bowler before an elbow injury forced him to give up this game in 2007, said that seeing the release of the movie getting delayed every few months impacts all. However, he stated that the team of "83" is ready to wait a little longer until the cinema returns to its regular capacity. ## "We've put in so much hard work and love into '83', and seeing its release delayed every few months does impact all of us but we also understand it's for the safety of our fans", Sandhu said in a chat with IANS on his 35th birthday. ## The singer-actor added, "We want our audience to enjoy every second of the movie and if we have to wait for it a little longer until operations return to their regular capacity, it doesn't upset us at all". ## "83" traces the story of India's first-ever cricket World Cup victory in 1983 under the leadership of former Indian captain Kapil Dev, played by Ranveer Singh. Despite getting delayed, Sandhu strongly believes that the film deserves a theatrical release, and only Reliance Entertainment and director Kabir Khan can give an exact release date. ## The movie was earlier scheduled for theatrical release on 10 April 2020 but was pushed to 25 December 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, in November 2020, the film was again delayed to the first quarter of 2021 by makers seeing the worst occupancy report of audience towards theatres owing to the continuity of pandemic. ## It is jointly produced by Kabir Khan, Vishnuvardhan Induri, Deepika Padukone, and Sajid Nadiadwala and co-distributed by Reliance Entertainment. The movie stars Ranveer Singh as cricketer Kapil Dev, along with Padukone, Tahir Raj Bhasin, Jiiva, Saqib Saleem, Harrdy Sandhu, Ammy Virk, Pankaj Tripathi, Boman Irani, Nishant Dahiya, Sahil Khattar and Amrita Puri. ## Stay tuned...

BCCI Willing To Host A Farewell Match For MS Dhoni, Says Senior Board official

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is very much willing to host a farewell match for the former India captain and two-time world cup winner Mahendra Singh Dhoni, according to a senior board official.## MS Dhoni has announced his retirement on the evening of Independence Day of India (August) and put an end to his glorious 16-years of an international career. Dhoni who has a habit of keeping himself away from the limelight announced his retirement via an Instagram post and video. ## Over the 16-years of career, Dhoni has achieved a lot as a captain and as a player. He is the only captain in the history of cricket to win all three ICC trophies - the ICC T20 World Cup (2007), the ICC ODI World Cup (2011), and the ICC Champions Trophy (2013). ## And now, looking at his achievements, BCCI believes that MS Dhoni has done a lot for India and deserves a proper farewell. And therefore, the board will reportedly have a word with Dhoni during the IPL regarding his desire to play a farewell game. ## "There is no international series right now, maybe after IPL, we will see what can be done because Dhoni has done a lot for the nation and he deserves all the respect. We always wanted to have a farewell match for him but Dhoni is a different player. He announced his retirement when nobody was thinking of it", the official told IANS. ## "Surely we will speak to him during the IPL and that would be the right place to get his opinion about a match or series. Well, there will be a proper felicitation ceremony for him no matter if he agrees on it or not.
