Amazon Studios' All-Time Expensive 'Lord of the Rings' Series Got Criticism For Lacking Asian Actors

Los Angeles, May 15, 2021: Amazon Studio, which is set to create history with its upcoming television series, Lord of the Rings, received criticism for not having enough diversity in Middle-earth. Chinese Canadian actor Ludi Lin, who plays Liu Kang in the Warner Bros. "Mortal Combat" film, criticized Amazon for not having characters that look Asian. ## "It's going to be difficult to justify building a "huge world" without any characters that look Asian. Turn that imagine on us @JSalke. It's not hard, we're right here", Ludi Lin tweeted on Thursday (May 13). He was reacting to coverage of The Hollywood Reporter's Executive Roundtable, which was posted Wednesday. ## Amazon has cast 35 cast members of varying ethnic backgrounds for the "Lord of The Rings" series, the first season of which will be the most expensive season of television ever produced with its massive over $450 million budget. Lin seems to be correct that none of the 35 members is Asian, though it's also not clear how many of the actors identify, according to THR. ## Meanwhile, Amazon Studios' chief Jennifer Salke justified the whopping budget of the series by saying that, "The market is crazy, as you saw with the "Knives Out" deal [Netflix paid $469 million for two sequels]. This is a full season of a huge world-building show. The number is a sexy headline or a crazy headline that's fun to click on, but that is really building the infrastructure of what will sustain the whole series".## Salke is confident that a lot of people will watch the series when it will come. The series is currently under production and expected to debut in late 2021 or early 2022. ## Stay tuned
