'Yeh Kaali Kaali Ankhen' Review: A Teasing Thriller That Fails To Deliver

BY SACNILK

Series: 'Yeh Kaali Kaali Ankhen' (Streaming on Netflix)## Duration: Averages 40 minutes per episode## Director: Sidharth Sengupta## Cast: Tahir Raj Bhasin, Shweta Tripathi Sharma, Anchal Singh, Saurabh Shukla, Bijendra Kala, Surya Sharma, Anantvijay Joshi, Sunita Rajwar## IANS Rating: *** (3 star) Designed as a pulpy thriller this eight-episode series is an engaging, psychological romance drama set in the backdrop of crime and power.## Based in the fictional town of Onkara, 'Yeh Kaali Kaali Ankhein' follows a recently graduated engineering student Vikrant who is the cynosure of Purva's eyes since her school days. Purva is the daughter of the local, all-powerful politician Akheraj Awasthi who would go to any length to keep his daughter happy.## Years later, circumstances make their paths meet when Vikrant after finishing his studies, is forced by his father to seek Akheraj's blessings and maybe a "job". Vikrant's father works as an accountant for Akheraj and is indebted to him on various grounds.## Vikrant unenthusiastically lands up at Akheraj's premise and by happenstance meets Purva, who ensures that her father offers him a job as the manager of her Zumba classes with a plump salary. Instead of getting elated, Vikrant is not happy because he can't fathom how he'd put his engineering education to use in a dead-end job.## Also, unbeknownst to his family, he is in love with his college mate Shikha Agarwal and dreams of settling with her in Bhilai, where he hopes to get a job.## So, the next day after promising Shikha that he would marry her, Vikrant goes to Akheraj's office intending to tell Akheraj that he is not interested in working for him. While he is there, he witnesses an event that repulses him. He then goes to Purva and tells her that he is not interested in working for her family, but the events that follow make it clear that he can't escape Purva's clutches.## So, he reluctantly accepts to work and later even marries Purva with the intention of revenge. How he attempts to break free from Purva and her family, forms the crux of the narrative. The characters are all well-etched, and the lines they mouth are refreshing at times may even be soapy that drives too many aspects of the dramatic narrative.## Tahir Raj Bhasin as Vikrant is impressive. You feel and root for him as he takes you through Vikrant's emotional journey from a simpleton to a determined lover wanting to marry the person he loves. Similarly striking are Vikrant's friend Golden, and Bijendra Kala, who essays his father. For a change, Kala brings his character to life with his charged histrionics. The rest of the cast backed by familiarity is sincere but passable.## On the writing front, the plot of the series is straightforward, with the screenplay often teasing at some outlandish possibilities. The pace of the telling keeps you hanging to the ledge. It is only the final episode with its abrupt ending that leaves you a bit disappointed, for it does not fulfill the promise it assured us in the first episode.## Stay tuned...

Carbon Review: A refreshingly fresh investigative thriller that impresses

BY SACNILK

Film: Carbon (Releasing in Theatres). Duration: 125 minutes.## Director: Srinuvasan. Cast: Vidhaarth, Dhanya B., Marimuthu and Munar Ramesh.## IANS Rating: ***1/2## Director Srinuvasan's 'Carbon' is a refreshingly fresh investigative thriller that keeps you hooked from start to finish, thanks to an innovative plot that has some really interesting twists right till the very end.## The film's story revolves around Shankar (Vidaarth), a wannabe policeman who ends up taking up a job in a private firm because of a quarrel with his dad (played by Marimuthu).## Shankar has a strange gift. He often has dreams and more importantly, his dreams come true. One night, the man dreams of his dad being hit by a black SUV. The nightmare leaves him shaken. He wakes up breaking into a sweat and frantically begins to search for his dad only to realize that he has had an accident just as he had dreamed.## Shankar rushes his unconscious dad to the hospital, where doctors tell him that it's imperative that they perform a surgery that is going to cost him a fortune. The only way out for Shankar will be to find the person responsible for the accident and claim the insurance amount.## With the cops not making any serious effort to find the driver of the vehicle, Shankar realizes he will have to carry out the investigation himself.## It is at this point that one night, sitting beside his dad's bed, he dozes off out of sheer exhaustion. That's when he has a dream in which he sees the SUV that caused the accident. The door of the SUV opens and just as the driver is to get out, Shankar is woken up by the woman who cleans the hospital ward.## In the desperate hope that the same dream could reappear if he did all the tasks that he did that particular day, Shankar attempts a repeat the next day.## Things don't work out initially and the dream does not appear. Waiting for the dream to recur, Shankar, with the help of his sharp sense of observation, realizes that it was not just a hit-and-run case; it was actually an attempt to murder his dad. Who would want to murder his dad and why would they want to do it? Does Shankar find out the criminal? And does he save his dad? 'Carbon' gives you the answers.## The film is a gripping thriller and full marks to director Srinuvasan for having told the story in a neat and compact manner. Half of the credit for the film being tight and gripping should go to editor K.L. Praveen for his brilliant cuts. There are absolutely no unnecessary scenes and the story moves at a blistering pace, right from the word 'go'.## Within the first 10 minutes of the film, the director showcases the strong bond of love between the father and son, who despite not being on talking terms with each other, deeply care about one another. And within the same period, he also explains everything about Shankar's dreams and their tendency to come true.## Sam CS's background score provides ample support to the director who is looking to narrate a gripping thriller. His score captures the mood and amplifies it, making sure the audience has no trouble in understanding the emotion the director is looking to convey.## Vidhaarth as Shankar is just outstanding in the film, which incidentally happens to be his 25th. He plays the part to perfection and wins your heart hands down.## Dhanya B, who appears in the film just before the intermission, is perfect for the role and delivers a commendable performance. The reason why the second half is as intense as the first is primarily because of Dhanya's characterization and contribution.## Maarimuthu as Vidhaarth's dad delivers a commendable performance. The care and concern that he showcases while appearing to be strict to his son is just so adorable.## Director Srinuvasan, while narrating a thrilling entertainer, also actually highlights a fact that Tamil cinema has often chosen to misinterpret. It looks to set the record straight with regard to dad-son relationships and highlights that for every son his dad is a hero. And that invariably, sons love their dads as much as their mothers, if not more.## Some of the dialogues in the film are deep and hit the nail on the head. For instance, there is this scene in which the heroine asks the hero, "Sons are supposed to be close to their mothers. You seem to be different." To this, the hero replies, "When a man's mother passes away, her place is filled by his wife. But when a man's dad passes away, that place remains vacant. This is why sons miss dads a lot more than their mothers. The position that dads hold in a son's life is special".## It is not as if the film has no problems. There are some lapses in logic towards the end of the film. Also, the manner in which cops are showcased in the film dents the realism somewhat. But these are small lapses that can be forgiven.## On the whole, 'Carbon' is a good, neat, sleek investigative thriller that is definitely worth your time.## Stay tuned...

Kaun Banegi Shikharwati Review: Perfect Casting Saves This Series

BY SACNILK

Series: 'Kaun Banegi Shikharwati' (Streaming on Zee5); Duration: Averaging 40 minutes per episode## Directors: Gauravv K. Chawla, Ananya Banerjee; Cast: Naseeruddin Shah, Raghubir Yadav, Soha Ali Khan, Lara Dutta, Anya Singh, Kritika Kamra, Cyrus Sahukar, Varun Thakur## IANS Rating: **1/2## Set in the royal land of Rajasthan, 'Kaun Banegi Shikharwati' is a hackneyed ten-episode dramedy where a father attempts to reunite his four estranged daughters to save the legacy they hold.## Naseeruddin Shah plays Raja Mrityunjay, the erstwhile King of Shikharwati, who is bogged down with empty coffers and a huge debt to the Indian Government - in terms of property tax in arrears. To save himself from the situation he is in, with the help of his close confidant Mishraji, he feigns a strange illness and calls his four estranged daughters; Devyani, Gayatri, Kamini, and Uma to his palace with the assurance that he would decide an heir after the four of them compete in a competition.## The rules of the competition are simple. There would be nine rounds in the competition, and each round would be a task which the princesses would have to perform. In the end, the winner of the competition would be appointed the next "King". That is how the plot kicks in and thus begins the predictable misadventures of the quirky princesses who do their darndest to win.## Each episode is astutely crafted with art that seems insubstantial and meandering on the surface and thus may repulse some. But by the tenth episode, after you have had the patience of sitting through the earlier nine, you'd get hooked to find the series end on a meaningful and heart-warming note.## As for the characters; Naseeruddin Shah as the idiosyncratic Raja with his fuzzy tuft looking as cozily rumpled as an unmade bed, making it clear that Raja Mritunjay is not a heartless, mean man and that he has the welfare of his daughters and his estate at heart, Lara Dutta as Devyani his oldest daughter with marital issues, Soha Ali Khan as his considerate second daughter Gayatri who is a single mom to her two children, Kritika Kamra as his third unmarried daughter Kamini who is obsessed over her social media follower count and Anya Singh as Uma his allergy-prone, gamer daughter, Cyrus Sahukar as Devyani's husband Harsh Neotia, Raghubir Yadav as Mishraji, and the rest of the ilk, all appear stereotypical and oft-seen.## Similarly, spare for a handful of inspired scenes, the rest of the series appear cliched and unoriginal.## In the lesser hand, 'Kaun Banegi Shikharwati' could have been indigestible pablum, but its pitch-perfect cast won't let you soon forget the poignant bonding of the series. There is a natural performative quality to the actors' embodiment of their characters. They all seem to be living their parts effortlessly and are impressive in their marked roles, with them going big at all times with smirks, sighs, smiles, and tears.## Overall, mounted with ace production values, the series appears staged with damaged individuals in search of - connection and unity, who wind up tidy to a cheesy fault.## Stay tuned...

'Sing 2 Review': An adventurous, storybook-style spectacle (Rating: ***)

BY SACNILK

Film: Sing 2 (Showing in Theatres). Duration: 110 minutes## Director: Garth Jennings. Voice Cast: Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Scarlett Johansson, Taron Egerton, Seth MacFarlane, Tori Kelly, Nick Kroll, Bobby Cannavale, Halsey, Pharrell Williams, Chelsea Peretti, Letitia Wright, and Eric Andre.## IANS Rating: *** (By Troy Ribeiro)## Mounted like an adventurous, storybook-style spectacle, 'Sing 2' takes place sometime later after the events of its 2016 prequel.## Set in the glitzy showbiz town of Redshore city, Buster Moon (Matthew McConaughey), hoping to launch a bigger and flashier musical act, gathers together much of the same old cast consisting of Ash (Scarlett Johansson), the porcupine who's the first to answer his call; Johnny (Taron Egerton), the gorilla who gets a dance sequence in the new show but can't master his moves until he pairs up with Lynx (Letitia Wright); Gaunter (Nick Kroll), a passionate dancing pig who partners with Rosita (Reese Witherspoon), the momma pig who has basically achieved all that she wanted; and Meena (Tori Kelly), the shy elephant who can't work up any chemistry with her self-absorbed singing partner Darius (Eric Andre), the yak.## Together, after failing to impress talent scout Suki (Chelsea Peretti), for one of the local talent events, they sneak in for an audition with entertainment mogul Jimmy Crystal (Bobby Cannavale), who is totally uninterested in Moon's original show-pitch. But after Gunter tells him about "a spectacular show that will take your audience out-of-the-world", Jimmy is hooked and greenlights the show to Moon with a clause.## The show should be up within the next three weeks and feature the recluse rock star Clay Calloway (Bono), the white-maned, aged lion who has not been seen in the circuit for the past 15 years after his wife passed away. How Moon accidentally promises something he isn't sure he can deliver and actually succeeds in his mission forms the crux of this story.## Despite a predictable narrative that drags in the middle, what makes the film appealing are the colourful anthropomorphic creatures and the wonderful songs they sing.## The number of characters and eye-catching pieces fill up the screen impressively. There is a grand musical number which is the highlight of the film. Also, the goofy dialogues offer profound life lessons that are either motivational or uplifting.## The voices of the ace star cast lend the right amount of dramatics to the characters.## Visually, the film is exciting, and it is easy to lose yourself in the telling. The animation is spectacular, with all animals faithfully created, looking appealing and truly alive. Also, each frame is vibrant and colourful. The action sequences add that extra punch to the narrative.## Overall, the film is a fun entertainer that will wow children and adults alike.## Stay tuned...

IANS Review: 'Writer': Gripping thriller that shines the light on underbelly of police force (IANS Rating: ***1/2)

BY SACNILK

Film: 'Writer'. Duration (Releasing in Theatres): 149 minutes. ## Director: Franklin Jacob. Cast: Samudrakani, Ineya. Lizzy Antony, Maheshwari, Hari Krishnan, Subramaniya Siva, Antony and Manickam. ## IANS Rating: ***1/2 ## Director Franklin Jacob's 'Writer' is an interesting and engaging thriller that stands out for two reasons. Probably for the first time, a film tells what exactly happens in the lower rungs of the police force and how those at the bottom of the force are treated with contempt and made to work almost like slaves. ## The second reason is it tries to make a case for permitting police force personnel to have a union, something which is not possible at the moment. ## The film starts off with Thangaraj (Samuthirakani), who works as a writer in a police station in Trichy. On the verge of retirement, Thangaraj has two families to support -- his first wife Amutha (Lizzy Antony) who has separated from him and his second wife Subha (Maheshwari) and her young son with whom he is living at the moment. ## Thangaraj has just one dream and that is to have a union for police personnel. It is for this right that he has filed a case and continues to fight, despite several odds. ## Thangaraj's move to file a case against the police administration doesn't go down well with the top brass of the police force. One day, a senior officer slaps him and hurls abuses at him for demanding a union for policemen. When he stands his ground and glares back, the officer orders a punishment transfer. ## Thangaraj has no other option but to make his way to Chennai. Here again, he is looked down upon by those in the station and made to do tasks that are much below his grade. He bears everything and continues to work. ## One day, he is asked to do "para duty". His duty is to go and guard a suspect called Devakumar (Harikrishnan) who has been illegally detained by the inspector and the Deputy Commissioner in a marriage hall. ## With no case file or details of why the man has been detained, Thangaraj hesitantly makes his way to the place to guard the suspect. Devakumar, a Ph.D scholar, is a Dalit who hails from a poor family. Thangaraj and the young man begin to get along well. A couple of days later, Thangaraj is asked to set Devakumar free. ## A relieved Thangaraj does that but little does he know that both his life and the life of the suspect is about to change... ## 'Writer' is engaging from the word 'go'. It boldly shows how cops keep crime percentages at optimal levels and how "recoveries" of stolen goods are made and handed back to their owners. ## It highlights the bargains that cops strike with those who have lodged complaints to make them withdraw their complaints. It also shows how cops operate in teams to discredit individuals and build non-existant cases. In fact, the film has sequences that show writers conjuring up imaginary situations. In short, it shows how unreliable the statements of police personnel are. ## Franklin Jacob seems to have a good understanding of how the system functions and he uses this understanding well to tell a compelling story that draws our attention to the sad state of affairs prevailing in our society. ## The film has some exceptional performances coming in from all its actors. Samuthirakani, in particular, is brilliant. He relishes playing a conscientious cop, who is caught between having to lie to protect his colleagues in the police force and trying to save an innocent individual who has incurred the wrath of the cops.## Harikrishnan as the young Dalit who is being framed for no fault of his is equally good. Subramaniya Siva as the uneducated brother of the Dalit suspect is outstanding.## Govind Vasantha's music is just fantastic. It adds life to the proceedings and intensifies the emotions that the film is trying to convey.## 'Writer' does not talk just about caste atrocities or atrocities committed by the police force on the public. It also talks about the atrocities the force commits on its own personnel and makes a strong demand for a redressal mechanism to be put in place.## Stay Tuned To Sacnilk For More Such Updates.

IANS Review: 'The Matrix Resurrections': Astutely mounted yet peculiar (IANS Rating: ***)

BY SACNILK

There has been an aura of obsession and nostalgia with the Matrix franchise ever since the first film in 1999. Thence we have had two other Matrix films in quick succession, which were released in 2003. ## 'The Matrix Resurrections' is the fourth film of its franchise and is the sequel to its last release, 'The Matrix Revolutions,' which hit theatres nearly 18 years ago. ## This film caters to its fan base, and thus, those who are not initiated into the Matrix universe would find themselves in an alien world, not knowing what is happening on screen. ## With events taking place nearly two decades after 'Revolutions', and unlike its trilogy where the future of humanity was being threatened, this film feels more of a love story within its action drama. ## At the core of the narrative are the resurrected Neo (Keanu Reeves) and Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss), who are hidden within the code and kept on a short leash. This is done to prevent them from getting together and causing another system collapse. ## But when a group of humans from the outside world led by a blue-haired gunslinger named Bugs (Jessica Henwick), discovers that Thomas Anderson, a world-famous video designer working at Deux Machina, is actually the legendary Neo and that he is still alive, they try to break him out of the matrix and seek his help to once again save humanity. ## But Neo, after meeting Trinity by happenstance insists that the group's priority must be to rescue Trinity who, is oblivious of her past and now lives with her three children and a husband. Since she can get out of the Matrix through her own free will, Neo has to remind her of who she once was and the love that they shared. ## The plot is complex, convoluted, and at times amateurish, with an over-explanation of events from the past. Despite its brisk pacing, subtlety is not a strong point in the film. There is footage from the trilogy that appears often also, at one stage, there is a group of creative directors discussing what the Matrix is all about. ## As for the action sequences, the film boasts of chaotic car chases, gunfights, and gravity-defying stunts, but all of them offer nothing extraordinary in terms of experiences. There is an over-abundance and overuse of special effects that, at some point, get irritating. ## The fights are poorly mounted, and with the ridiculous number of cuts, the scenes appear absurdly choppy even if you ignore that, the choreography itself seems languid and sluggish. ## As for the performances, the chemistry between Reeves and Moss is palpable, but not in the same way that one had witnessed in the previous Matrix films. Here their engagement is soft and endearing. ## Priyanka Chopra is confidence personified and striking in a small part, essaying Sati, a role earlier portrayed by Tanveer K. Atwal. ## All others in the supporting cast have loads of fun with their characters and have their moments of on-screen glory. ## Overall, the film despite being astutely and impressively staged seems to be a bit chaotic and peculiar. ## Film: 'The Matrix Resurrections' (Showing in theatres); Duration: 148 minutes ## Director: Lana Wachowski ## Cast: Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jonathan Groff, Jessica Henwick, Neil Patrick Harris, Jada Pinkett Smith, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Christina Ricci, Lambert Wilson ## IANS Rating: *** ## Review By: Troy Ribeiro ## For more and the latest news about Hollywood, stay tuned to us.

First Reviews For Biopic Sports Drama '83' Are Out!

BY SACNILK

Mumbai, December 20 - Reliance Entertainment had held back two of its big-budget films - Sooryavanshi and 83, for more than 15 months for theatrical releases, after getting delayed by the covid-19 pandemic. While "Sooryavanshi" has delivered and proved the decision right, the onus is now on "83" to repeat the success of Rohit Shetty's directorial. ## Based on India's maiden ODI world cup triumph in 1983, "83", directed by Kabir Khan, is being billed as one of the most anticipated films of the Bollywood film industry at the moment. The movie, starring Ranveer Singh as Kapil Dev, is creating excitement among the fans with the launch of the trailer, songs, promos, and collaborations with stars of the South film industry and sports fraternity. ## The makers, meanwhile, seemed to be super confident about their product as they held a special show for some celebrities and critics five days ahead of the release. Everything you want from a Peter Parker story. It has never been a better time to be a Spider-Man fan. @MCU_Direct— Matt Roembke - TheDirect.com (@mattroembke) December 14, 2021 ## Believe the hype! #SpiderManNoWayHome is absolutely incredible. Not only the best superhero movie of the year, but hands down the best Spider-Man film ever that honors what has come before.— Umberto Gonzalez (@elmayimbe) December 14, 2021 ## #SpiderManNoWayHome is undoubtedly the biggest, the most emotional, and possibly the best #SpiderMan movie ever. Need to sit with it and decide. It’s hard to imagine topping this one. Like, genuinely, hard to imagine getting more than this movie gives you as a #SpiderMan fan. pic.twitter.com/lUIJE6QM7O— Spider-Bran (@BrandonDavisBD) December 14, 2021 ## Tom Holland and Zendaya deliver brilliant, emotional performances in #SpiderManNoWayHome.Everyone does. Benedict Cumberbatch has a great and fresh take on Strange but the #SpiderMan cast is just so great together. pic.twitter.com/ral2UAb6LD— Spider-Bran (@BrandonDavisBD) December 14, 2021 ## #SpidermanNoWayHome sends this trilogy off on a glorious high note! The action is top-notch and the villains steal the show. It felt like a culmination of all the previous 'Spider-Man' films that came before it. This is the BEST Spider-Man film to date! pic.twitter.com/jIMG2aHgwd— Dorian Parks (@DorianParksnRec) December 14, 2021 ## #SpiderManNoWayHome is the most satisfying #SpiderMan movie you can imagine today. The movie delivers. It’s packed and moves at lightning speed. Relentless. It’s just so satisfying and rewarding.Hats off to Jon Watts for landing this one. Just an epic movie. Wow. pic.twitter.com/Acw4T9OHYA— Spider-Bran (@BrandonDavisBD) December 14, 2021 ## #SpiderManNoWayHome: wow, tears and the loudest crowd I’ve heard since Endgame— Aaron Couch (@AaronCouch) December 14, 2021 ## #SpiderManNowWayHome feels a bit like an Avengers 4.5. It's not a perfect movie and I have some criticism. But my main concern—that Tom Holland's Peter Parker arc would be lost in all this—was not the case at all. Very emotional Peter Parker story that ties it all together. pic.twitter.com/c9xTfj3NCX— Brandon Katz ☕️ (@Great_Katzby) December 14, 2021 ## I. Cried. The. Entire. Time.#SpiderManNoWayHome— Ash Crossan (@AshCrossan) December 14, 2021 ## Stay tuned...
