Blast From The Past: 41 Years Of Shaan Bollywood

Blast From The Past: 41 Years Of Shaan

Mumbai, Dec 12, 2021: If a film of any director turns out to be a good film and it becomes a huge hit, then obviously the expectations of the audience increase from that director's next film. Not only the director but also the next movies of the main stars associated with that film expect the audience to be better than the previous film. ## I have written these lines because the film that we will talk about today had similar expectations from the audience to the distributors. Today we will talk About the film "Shaan", produced by P. Sippy and directed by his son Ramesh Sippy, released on 12 December 1980. ## Everyone knows that "Sholay" was directed by Ramesh Sippy. Perhaps no cinema lover would be unaware of the box office records of "Sholay". This film proved to be a milestone in the Hindi film industry. The film set such records that an era is counted in the Hindi film industry as a pre-Sholay and a post-Sholay era. ## "Sholay" was also a big-budget film and was made in around 3 crores. Yes, G. P. Sippy and Ramesh Sippy knew very well that now after "Sholay", what are the people's expectations from them, so there was a plan to make "Shaan" on a very big level in every department. ### After the record-breaking box office success of "Sholay", this film was also expected to garner the same success as "Sholay". The makers of the film did a lot of publicity before its release. Big posters of the film were put up in many cities with the words "The Greatest Show on Earth". A similar poster was put up at Minerva Cinema in Mumbai. “Shaan” was replacing Sippy’s previous film “Sholay” after 5 years in Minerva cinema. ## This was happening in cinemas in many other cities. The film's villain's tremendous look, tremendous star cast, gorgeous action sequences, melodious music, item song, and tremendous publicity created such a hype that the booking of the film went up to 2 crores 80 lakhs. This was the biggest advance till that time. The film was released and the film initially made bumper collections. The first week's collections of this film in Mumbai were almost 100%. ## But due to poor mouth publicity of the film, the collections slowly came down. The second-week collections were 89% in Mumbai and 78% in the third week. This film was made on Sholay's double budget of about 6 crores. Due to the bumper success of Sippy's previous film Sholay, the All India Rights of this film was bought by the distributors for about 10.75 crores. Ultimately the distributors suffered a loss of about 3 crores. ## The film was re-released in digital print in April 2005 by Sippy to mark its 25th anniversary. Overall, the film earned a net of around 4.25 crores in India. The gross of the film was eight and a half crores and it was the fifth highest-grossing movie of that year. The first four places were Kurbani, Asha, Ram Balram, and Dostana respectively. ## For more and the latest news about Bollywood, stay tuned to us.

Filmmaker Ramesh Sippy Reveals In KBC 13 How Dream Cast Of Iconic 'Sholay' Was Assembled

Mumbai, October 16 - Legendary filmmaker Ramesh Sippy along with dream girl Hema Malini appeared in Amitabh Bachchan hosted Kaun Banega Crorepati 13 as special guests for the 'Shaandaar Shukravaar' episode. The iconic trio remembered the good old days of "Sholay" which is considered a benchmark film in Indian cinema.## During the special episode, Sippy, who directed the iconic "Sholay" (1975) revealed that why he chose Hema Malini for the role of Basanti and how did he think about 'Jai-Veeru' played by Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra respectively. ## "See, Hema Ji in her first film with me had portrayed the role of a young widow and in the second film, 'Seeta Aur Geeta', she surprised us. So, for the role of 'Basanti', I felt that no one can do it apart from her", the filmmaker told Big B. ## "Also, there was one more thing. When we completed 'Seeta Aur Geeta' and it became successful, it is then when we decided whatever I make after this, Dharam Ji, Hema Ji, and Sanjeev Ji must be there. And as the script of 'Sholay' was shaping up, it was fitting perfectly", he added.## Ramesh Sippy, who directed Big B in three more films after "Sholay", further revealed how he thought of Jai-Veeru and who suggested him to pick Amitabh Bachchan who wasn't a big star at that time. "We had 'Veeru', he was there in the last film, too. So, there was one thing that I had thought about is that we have three superstars and if I get one more superstar, it would be difficult for me, only".## "So, then I thought I need a good actor, who does good work and becomes a team. Because when Salim-Javed suggested Amit Ji for this role, saying there's one 'Amitabh Bachchan' who's doing good work and is working with us in 'Zanjeer'. I said ok, that's good. And, then I thought that he's not a star at the moment so I won't have that problem that there's one more star on the set", he said. ## The filmmaker also said that Big B did a great job in "Anand" and then "Bombay to Goa". He also remembered the dance by Big B in a bus in the film "Bombay to Goa" and got the idea of picking Big B. "I felt this seems to be an actor who can do anything. So, he will be able to give us what we want. That's how the casting was done", he added.## To all that Sippy said, Amitabh acknowledges and responded: "Thank you very much, Sir". Replying to this, Sippy shared: "You proved it. And by the time the film released, you became the biggest star".## "Sholay" was released on Independence day in 1975 and was the highest-grossing Indian film at that time. It also starred Sanjeev Kumar as Thakur Baldev Singh, Amjad Khan as Gabbar Singh, Jaya Bhaduri, Iftekhar, Asrani, Jagdeep, Leela Mishra, among others. ## Stay tuned...

Ramesh Sippy on Rishi Kapoor, 'the romanticist'

RAMESH SIPPY directed RISHI KAPOOR in "Saagar" (1985), a film that celebrated the actor's romantic swagger as very few Bollywood love stories could.## BY RAMESH SIPPY## Mumbai, April 30 (IANS) We made just one film together and it was a wonderful association. I was very happy with the turnout, and all the actors -- especially Rishi Kapoor. He contributed a lot in the romantic film.## Rishi Kapoor was a very versatile and wonderful actor. A romantic lead in the earlier part of his life. Even at the time of "Saagar", he was still a romanticist. Later, he went on to do all kinds of roles and excelled in those.## My associations and experiences with him were very good. Once he understood the role and what I was looking for, there was absolutely no need for me to tell him anything. I didn't need to direct him. He understood it and expressed it wonderfully. There was hardly any need to say anything to him.## He will stay with me in my memories, as a brilliant and wonderful actor, who gave me whatever I wanted with all his acting abilities, senses, and feeling, in the professional side.## On the personal side, I have known the Kapoors for a long time. From respecting his grandfather to Raj Kapoor Ji, and working with his uncles, Shammi Kapoor and Shashi Kapoor, the association has been very long. He was a wonderful human being -- full of life. After work, you could talk to him about anything in the world. He was much more communicative than I was outside of work. He loved life. He lived it well.## It is so sad that you can't pay respect to the family and can't be with them because of the lockdown and distancing restrictions.## Stay tuned...

Ramesh Sippy: Not really keen to remake 'Sholay' Bollywood

Ramesh Sippy: Not really keen to remake 'Sholay'

New Delhi, April 21 (IANS) Bollywood has been obsessed with remakes of cult films and blockbusters but filmmaker Ramesh Sippy, who gave Indian cinema one of its biggest gems, "Sholay", in 1975, does not favor the idea of his 45-year-old classic being recreated.## "I am not really keen to recreate 'Sholay' unless one can imagine a way to represent it in a very different way. Otherwise, remaking is something I would not like to do as far 'Sholay' is considered. It does not mean that I am against remakes -- many films have been remade beautifully but it's not that easy. It's how you recreate the whole world of a particular film and genre (that matters)," Sippy told IANS.## An attempt to recreate "Sholay" was done by Ram Gopal Varma in 2007, with "Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag". However, Varma's attempt was universally rejected and the film failed at box office.## Sippy's "Sholay" starred Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Sanjeev Kumar, Hema Malini and Jaya Bachchan among others. Today, the film is primarily remembered for Amjad Khan's iconic performance as the film's arch-villain, dacoit Gabbar Singh.## Recalling the memories of "Sholay", Sippy shared that it was extreme challenging to helm such a masterpiece back in the day.## "From making so many actors work together to involving high-octane action sequences and introducing people to the concept of a 70mm screen, creating 'Sholay' was a huge challenge. I am glad that our efforts did not go in vain. People liked our film, appreciated it and even 45 years later they still talk about it. It feels great to be associated with such a remarkable project," he added.## "Sholay" apart, Sippy made several other big-ticket Bollywood films such as "Andaz", "Seeta Aur Geeta", "Shaan", "Shakti" and "Saagar". He is also known for his serial of the eighties, "Buniyaad", which is currently being re-telecast on Doordarshan amid the coronavirus lockdown. The 73-year-old verteran is naturally thrilled.## Written by Manohar Shyam Joshi, the show is a family saga based in the time of India-Pakistan Partition.## "The re-telecast of 'Buniyaad' has ushered in a wave of nostalgia. I am really happy to see my show back on the screen after almost 35 years. We have a difference audience today. I hope they will get to know what the nation had to go through in the past and learn something from it, as we are dealing with a similar kind of situation right now," Sippy said.## For more and latest news about Bollywood, stay tuned with us.
