Sona Mohapatra: Lockdown has reset our response to music, life

Mumbai, April 28 (IANS) Singer Sona Mohapatra has come out with a cheeky version of singer Arijit Singh's number "Zaalima" and said the quirky do-it-yourself (DIY) music video was created as an artistic response to the lack of songs featuring female voices in mainstream music.## "I think the lockdown has reset our response to music, art, and life in general. It's brought us back to basics & it's reflected in the music heard around the world. People now enjoy music that's more minimal & stripped down because it feels more handmade, personal, and authentic. This is why I decided to release this reprise version of a song for music lovers that was supposed to be part of the original soundtrack," she said.## The lyrics of the reprised version of the song, which was originally pictured on Shah Rukh Khan and Pakistani actress Mahira Khan, were written by Amitabh Bhattacharya.## "He is the biggest hitmaker lyricist of his generation and a dear friend of Ram and mine," Sona added.## She said she feels proud of being an artiste who might have alienated herself in Bollywood.## "The cheeky DIY music video was created as an artistic response to the lack of women songs in mainstream music and I feel proud of being that artist who might have alienated herself in Bollywood for calling out such sexist biases but will surely make things better for the coming generation of female artists for speaking up the truth," she said.## Stay tuned...

Lockdown diaries: Sona Mohapatra is working on new songs

Mumbai, April 16 (IANS) Singer Sona Mohapatra is using the lockdown period to work on original music. She is spending a lot of time in her home studio with composer and partner, Ram Sampath, working on new songs and collaborations.## "During the lockdown period, I have this newfound energy to work on a variety of music. There are no commercial pressures, no race against time to meet a deadline and it's now that I am doing some of my best, most gratifying work. I am exploring new genres, new tunes and a large variety of music," said Sona.## "I just spoke to the prolific songwriter and multiple award-winning lyricists Amitabh Bhattacharya about the current music scenario. Ram and I had last worked with him on the soundtrack of 'Delhi Belly'. We have decided to create some beautiful love ballads together, the kind that has gone missing from our mainstream nowadays. I'm also working with a lot of new, younger talent who are bursting with ideas," she added.## Ram shared that slowing down has helped them appreciate the things they took for granted and that has flowed into the creative process. "It's brought the focus back on the roots of music: melody, lyrics and a sense of hope for the future. We have too much and want too much. This time has taught us to work on what we need. That's at the heart of this creative phase".## For more and latest news about Bollywood, stay tuned with us.

COVID-19: Bollywood urges people not to abandon pets

Mumbai, March 21 (IANS) Amid the coronavirus pandemic, a lot of rumours and myths have found way into our WhatsApp inboxes. One such unfounded rumour links the disease to pets, which in turn has given rise to the trend of people abandoning pets.## Several Bollywood stars have taken to social media to urge their fans not to pay heed to such rumours, insisting that pets are not responsible for spreading the virus.## "Pets can't carry or contain the Covid-19 virus! So stay calm, give them love and spend some time with your PAWsome munchkins! #SpreadLove #StayPositive," tweeted Kriti Sanon.## Richa Chadha requested on social media: "Dogs aren't the carriers for coronavirus! Please please please don't abandon your pets! They think you are their parents. Would you abandon your child ? They must be so confused and heartbroken. Please don't!"## Reacting to Richa Chadha's tweet, singer Sona Mohapatra wrote: "Are people actually doing that?! Animals and Dogs in particular are our best bets in these times of isolation. Love machines and our best best friends."## "There is a lot of misinformation and miscommunication out there about the spread of #coronavirus through animals and pets. What's happening because of this is heartbreaking. Health experts maintain there has been no evidence to suggest that pets can spread the infection," wrote Sonali Bendre.## Twinkle Khanna shared: "There is no evidence that dogs and cats pass on Covid-19! Because of misleading posters and dubious sources of information, people are abandoning their pets! A cuddle a day keeps the doctor and the vet away, so do cuddle away #Dogperson."## For more and latest news about Bollywood, stay tuned with us.

Kanika Kapoor elicits mixed reactions from B-Town

Mumbai, March 21 (IANS) It's been over 24 hours that singer Kanika Kapoor was found to have attended several public events and high-profile parties despite testing positive for COVID-19, and Bollywood has mostly been guarded in reacting to the situation. The few responses that have come have been mixed. While some B-Town denizens have been critical of Kanika for not declaring her travel history upon arriving from the UK, a few others feel she is being unnecessarily victimized.## While Kanika was overwhelmingly criticized and trolled all through Saturday, and hashtag #KanikaKaCoronaCrime trended on Twitter, actress Sonam Kapoor came out in the singer's defense.## "Hey, guys @TheKanikakapoor came back on the 9th. India was not self-isolating but playing Holi," wrote Sonam.## While the singer continues facing flak for evading screening at the airport, Rishi Kapoor posted a tweet addressed to Taj Hotels on Friday. "Think. Chalo Delhi airport se to nikal gayi. Why an establishment like The Taj Lucknow Hotel didn't have the facility to screen visitors? After all the Taj is a huge name and a property. Surely they could have detected!"## The official page of Taj Hotels replied: "At all our hotels, we have undertaken extensive precautionary measures including thermal screening of all guests, staff, and vendors. At the time of check-in, her temperature was found to be normal. The safety and wellbeing of our guests and associates are of paramount importance."## Reacting to the reply, Rishi Kapoor came out in Kanika's support and, without mentioning her name, tweeted: "I appreciate, believe and respect The Taj Hotels has for all its guests regarding safety and security. Please tell this to the Media and the concerned Government. Unnecessarily the lady concerned is being victimized. With your strict measures surely she wasn't carrying the virus."## Unlike Rishi and Sonam Kapoor, though, not everyone in B-Town has sympathy for Kanika.## Last night, singer Sona Mohapatra came heavily on Kanika Kapoor for not being responsible enough after arriving in India from the UK earlier this month and mingling with numerous people at several public functions despite being afflicted by the coronavirus.## "The Coronavirus will explode because India is full of irresponsible idiots who ask everything from the government but do nothing in return," tweeted Sona.## She added: "Case in point, #KanikaKapoor hid her travel history after landing in #India (goddess knows how), attended events in Lucknow, Mumbai, went partying while staying in a 5 (star emoji) & has the virus! So all of U giving me Gyan about how ‘simplistic' PM's speech was, was it really?#WeThePeople."## On Friday evening, Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar released a video urging fans to stay safe in the present scenario. In a portion of the video, without taking names, he says in Hindi: "Passengers returning from their trips at Mumbai airport are being tested at the airport. Those who are found on low risk are being stamped and sent for home quarantine or at the hotel and they are being requested to maintain social distance for two weeks as a precaution. But believe it or not, despite being stamped for home quarantine, some of these passengers are not only traveling to other parts of the city but also to different parts of the country. They are attending weddings, going on vacations, going to crowded places and even attending parties. What are they thinking? What is this mentality? What are they not being able to understand?"## For more and latest news about Bollywood, stay tuned with us.

Sona Mohapatra attacks Kanika Kapoor for hiding travel history

Mumbai, March 21 (IANS) Singer Sona Mohapatra has come down heavily on singer Kanika Kapoor for not being responsible enough after arriving in India from the UK earlier this month, and mingling with numerous people at several public functions despite being afflicted by the coronavirus. ## In a series of tweets, Mohapatra also expressed doubt that the spread of COVID-19 could efficiently be curbed in India, what with "irresponsible idiots" around, who don't follow rules and endanger the lives of everyone around. ## "The Coronavirus will explode because India is full of irresponsible idiots who ask everything from the government but do nothing in return," Mohapatra tweeted. ## She added: "Case in point, #KanikaKapoor hid her travel history after landing in #India (goddess knows how),attended events in Lucknow, Mumbai, went partying while staying in a 5 Glowing star & has the virus! So all of U giving me gyan about how 'simplistic' PM's speech was, was it really? #WeThePeople," she wrote. ## Kapoor took to Instagram on Friday to state that she has tested positive, in a long note. "For the past 4 days I have had signs of flu, I got myself tested and it came positive for Covid-19. My family and I are in complete quarantine now and following medical advice on how to move forward," said Kapoor in the post. "I was scanned at the airport as per normal procedure 10 days ago when I came back home, the symptoms have developed only 4 days ago. At this stage I would like to urge you all to practice self isolation and get tested if you have the signs," went her statement. ## After returning from the UK carrying the virus, Kapoor has attended three parties in Lucknow, one in Kanpur and has been part of at least two other public gatherings, reported hindustantimes.com. Former Rajasthan chief minister Vasundhara Raje and her son, BJP MP Dushyant Singh, have self-quarantined themselves because they were in one of the parties where Kanika Kapoor was present. ## For more and the latest news about Bollywood, stay tuned to us.

Sona Mohapatra: Never wanted to be biggest playback singer

New Delhi, March 6 (IANS) Sona Mohapatra left a corporate job over a decade ago to be a musician. She now has a film of her own. She says she has never seen herself just as a singer and definitely not as somebody who wanted to be the biggest playback singer.## Also, no two days are the same for her.## "I wake up every day so excited. I feel like I am a three-year-old. I cannot believe the blessed life that I have," Sona told IANS.## She believes that people are living in very interesting times right now.## "Nobody needs to be restricted as an artiste. I have never seen myself just as a singer and definitely not somebody who wanted to be the biggest playback singer. I always saw myself as an artiste, (as) somebody who will express herself in different ways, be a storyteller," she shared.## She finds films a powerful medium where "so many of my interests came together, be it traveling or love for Indian folk music or exploring more about the kind of artistes across the centuries in India who have inspired me like Kabir, Mirabai, Amir Khusro, at the same time tied in this very contemporary milieu of where I inhabitate".## "I live in fancy five stars (hotels) as a pop star. I get two lakh people showing up at my concerts, I get trolled, I get acid attack threats, I am morphed onto porn sites - all of that exciting stuff alongside the fact that India is such a generous and beautiful country," she added.## Along with her, Deepti Gupta, the director of her documentary "Shut Up Sona", has a love for the country's roots.## "We made this journey of three years, 300 hours of footage, and in terms of a genre, I think it's first of its kind," said Sona.## The film's premiere at a Mumbai film festival last year was a significant event for her.## "As an artist, I wanted to start with my own country. That''s where I wanted an impact. This whole idea of going abroad and taking validation ''we have won so many laurels that's why you should watch us'', was something like no, we should be celebrated at home," she said.## "People were laughing so much through the film. People in India have this misconception about documentaries that it''s very serious, a niche thing and everything is very slow. Mine is a "masaledar" documentary. It''s a total fun ride and it made a lot of people emotional too. So I felt there must be something honest and true in it," she added about the film that the Delhi audience also got to watch at the Asian Women's Film Festival on Thursday.## "Shut Up Sona", which was screened at the International Film Festival Rotterdam, revolves around her journey as a rock star, her brand of music, love for her country's roots and culture and how she has become symbol of hope of a larger movement.## Sona feels glad that she got to express herself in another medium.## "I had no one telling me that ''iska gaana nikaldo'' (remove her song) , ''iski awaz bhaari hai'' (her voice is heavy). I hope many more artistes, women take charge of the narrative and tell their stories. There should be much more of a feminine perspective in the mainstream," said Sona.## "We need to see more of us in the open and not just by being the pretty face or waiting for a break or waiting for somebody else to give us an opportunity. I thought the opportunities for me were drying up. No one was giving me the next opportunity. I said ''okay either I start believing that I am not talented enough and sit down at home or I make my own journey happen''. That's the reason why I said ''let''s just make a film''," said the artiste, known for songs such as "Bolo na" and "Ambarsariya".## For more and latest news about Bollywood, stay tuned with us.
