Ranveer Singh's '83' Debuts In Netflix's Top 5 Movies Worldwide

Mumbai, March 31 - Ranveer Singh-fronted sports biopic, "83" has had an impressive debut on Netflix after completing its theatrical run. The Kabir Khan-directed lent in the top 5 most-watched non-English movies on Netflix worldwide. ## "83" movie was released in theaters worldwide on December 24 last year and was recently made available on OTT platforms - Disney Plus Hotstar and Netflix on March 21. In its opening week (March 21 - March 27) on Netflix, the movie got 10.5 million viewing hours and was the 4th most-watched movie on the streamer. ## Based on India's maiden cricket world cup triumph in 1983, "83" has been trending in the top 10 films in 20 countries. Among the Asian countries, the movie is the number 1 on Netflix in India, apart from Bahrain, Bangladesh, Maldives, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Sri Lanka, United Arab Emirates. It is also the number 1 movie in Africa's Mauritius. ## Meanwhile, the Swedish action thriller film, "Black Crab", which was released on March 18 directly on Netflix, garnered a massive 40.5 million viewing hours and remained the number 1 non-English movie on Netflix during the same week. "In Good Hands" and "Without Saying Goodbye" were number 2 and 3 with 28.93M and 13.85M viewing hours, respectively. ## Moving on to "83", the movie has had a decent outing at the box office. During its theatrical run, it grossed approx. 193 crores worldwide, however, due to the high stake involved in it, the movie was declared a box office flop. Mumbai, February 10 - Taapsee Pannu and Tahir Raj Bhasin's recently released comedy thriller film, "Looop Lapeta" has entered Netflix's top 5 most-watched non-English films this week. ## Directed by Aakash Bhatia, "Loop Lapeta" is the official Indian adaptation of the German film "Run Lola Run". The film premiered directly on Netflix, skipping theaters on February 4. Netflix released the list of most-watched films and shows from January 31 to February 6. ## According to data released by the streamer, "Loop Lapeta" was the 4th most-watched non-English film with viewing hours of 2.46 million in the first three days. The movie remained the only Indian film in Netflix's top 10 list this week. Mumbai, February 7 - Ranveer Singh-starrer cricket biopic, "83", has been struggling big at the Indian box office. The Kabir Khan-directed grossed approx Rs. 1.50 crores in its 7th weekend, pushing total domestic haul to Rs. 125 crores. ## The domestic box office of "83" is poor considering the fact that the movie cost over Rs. 220 crores in production. Overseas, "83" is the biggest Indian movie, released during the covid-19 pandemic. After 45 days, it has grossed approx Rs. 64 crores. The total worldwide gross for the film currently stands at Rs. 189 crores. ## Produced by Deepika Padukone, Kabir Khan, Vishnu Vardhan Induri, Sajid Nadiadwala, and Reliance Entertainment, "83" may be a disappointing outing, it has still surpassed many Bollywood biggies at the worldwide box office. Purva is the daughter of the local, all-powerful politician Akheraj Awasthi who would go to any length to keep his daughter happy.## Years later, circumstances make their paths meet when Vikrant after finishing his studies, is forced by his father to seek Akheraj's blessings and maybe a "job". Vikrant's father works as an accountant for Akheraj and is indebted to him on various grounds.## Vikrant unenthusiastically lands up at Akheraj's premise and by happenstance meets Purva, who ensures that her father offers him a job as the manager of her Zumba classes with a plump salary. Instead of getting elated, Vikrant is not happy because he can't fathom how he'd put his engineering education to use in a dead-end job.## Also, unbeknownst to his family, he is in love with his college mate Shikha Agarwal and dreams of settling with her in Bhilai, where he hopes to get a job.## So, the next day after promising Shikha that he would marry her, Vikrant goes to Akheraj's office intending to tell Akheraj that he is not interested in working for him. While he is there, he witnesses an event that repulses him. He then goes to Purva and tells her that he is not interested in working for her family, but the events that follow make it clear that he can't escape Purva's clutches.## So, he reluctantly accepts to work and later even marries Purva with the intention of revenge. How he attempts to break free from Purva and her family, forms the crux of the narrative. The characters are all well-etched, and the lines they mouth are refreshing at times may even be soapy that drives too many aspects of the dramatic narrative.## Tahir Raj Bhasin as Vikrant is impressive. You feel and root for him as he takes you through Vikrant's emotional journey from a simpleton to a determined lover wanting to marry the person he loves. Similarly striking are Vikrant's friend Golden, and Bijendra Kala, who essays his father. For a change, Kala brings his character to life with his charged histrionics. The rest of the cast backed by familiarity is sincere but passable.## On the writing front, the plot of the series is straightforward, with the screenplay often teasing at some outlandish possibilities. The pace of the telling keeps you hanging to the ledge. It is only the final episode with its abrupt ending that leaves you a bit disappointed, for it does not fulfill the promise it assured us in the first episode.## Stay tuned...

In a candid conversation with IANS, the actor, now seen playing Kapil Dev in Kabir Khan's '83', shared how he defeated his 'know it all' attitude during the initial stages of his career. ## Ranveer works extremely hard on his movies. From bulking up for his role of Alauddin Khilji in 'Padmavat' to transforming into a thin guy in 'Gully Boy', the Bollywood sensation is a living example of how one should approach one's work with utmost sincerity. ## There was a crucial lesson he learnt in the initial stages of his career and this eventually helped him become a superstar. ## The acclaimed actor has established himself as the biggest superstar of his generation with '83'. His performance is getting praise from both film critics as well as cricket fans. ## Despite such an impressive roster of achievements in a short span of time, the 36-year-old actor continues to be down to earth and believes there's a lot more to be done. ## "Mai actor ban gaya yaar, mujhe aaj tak yakin nahi ho raha hai! (I am an actor, I still can't believe it!) I got a chance to work with Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Zoya Akhtar, Rohit Shetty, Kabir Khan, Karan Johar ... what's happening is beyond my imagination. I am overwhelmed with the response I am getting. Who gets Kapil Dev's role in such a big film? Ten years back, when I started my career in Bollywood, I thought that I knew it all (in acting) and was entitled ... I mean after 'Band Baaja Baaraat', I thought I knew everything about acting. And was entitled ... like, whatever chances I am getting, I deserve it. ## "Actually, when I was struggling, I didn't feel like that, I was always so anxious at that time. My experiences made me anxious. I felt I had been wronged ... all the rejections, the humiliation! I (felt then that I) have been working hard for the past three-four years but not getting an opportunity. ## "After a point, it starts playing with your mind. And it starts making you feel frustrated, anxious and bitter. So, when 'Band Baaja Baaraat' became a hit, it was coming from inside. I started projecting entitlement ... that I know everything about acting. ## "But then, as time passed and I worked more and more, and as I matured, I realised, 'oh sh*t, I know nothing about acting'. This is limitless. There is no boundary. You can go to any extent. You can die here. This is what I learnt and realised that the more you work, the more you can give. Performance art has no limit," Ranveer said. ## Emphasising how grateful he was for the opportunities that had come his way, he said. "I feel really honoured to have worked with big directors. My mentor used to say that I must work in a way that next time when the director is making a movie, you should be his/her first choice." ## Ranveer is a shapeshifter, as we have seen from 'Bajirao' and 'Padmavat', to 'Simmba', to 'Gully Boy' and '83'. But there is a risk involved in this business of losing and gaining weight constantly. It can be dangerous. ## Responding to this observation, Ranveer said: "Yes, there is risk involved. I do take high risks. We have to shape our body as per the demand of the character. Despite being predictable, the film offers an exhilarating and occasionally touching experience that has viewers leaving the auditorium caught up in an afterglow of excited patriotism. ## The film mounted like a brilliantly restored or recreated documentary, captures the three and a half months of - 'the may or may not win' drama, where the actors and few of the actual players seamlessly weave in and out of the narrative. ## The film focuses only on cricket and has everything that cricket fans could have possibly hoped for. The narrative- highlights and flashes the crucial matches and the moments in-between them, bringing back memories to the big screen after nearly 38 years. ## As you are transported back in time, you witness how the 'underdog' Indian team was treated with disdain, and despite all odds, how they emerged as winners. It is invigorating to witness the matches once again and your mood swings like Kapil's bat. You cheer for him when he creates history with a fabulous 175- not out against the Zimbabwe team, and your blood boils when you realise that the legendary game was not recorded on camera because BBC did not think it was important enough. ## What you see on screen is Kapil's charisma, the locker-room banter, the occasional tension and problematic behaviour between the teammates, the strategy they planned during the matches and above all, the anguish and thrills of the matches played during that unforgettable summer. ## Casting is another aspect of the film that could not have been better either. Ranveer with his prosthetic dentures- oddly resembles Kapil Dev, but he slips into his shoes effortlessly delivering a brilliant performance that tugs at the heartstrings. While he emulates the captain of the team, Saqib Saleem plays Mohinder Amarnath, Tahir Raj Bhasin essays Sunil Gavaskar, Jatin Sarna is Yashpal Sharma, Jiiva is K.
