Theater Revenue Soars To Pre-Pandemic Level Despite Pricey Movie Tickets

Mumbai, May 28 - The Indian cinema biz went through a lot of challenges due to the covid-19 pandemic since the second quarter of 2020. The massive covid break out forced theaters to shut for nearly 1 and a half years which posed serious questions about theaters' existence. ## However, despite remaining shut for such a long time, the magic of big-screen remains unaffected as after opening their doors to viewers in the second half of 2021, theatres are back to the pre-pandemic level of collections this year. The tentpole titles of this year along with surprise blockbusters helped theaters' revenue to go up to the pre-pandemic level cinema owners are hoping that the momentum will continue throughout this year. ## "Last three months have been good for us. On average, we are clocking more than ₹1000-1500 crore every month", Inox Leisure's chief programming officer, Rajender Singh Jyala, said (via business insider) adding, "Movies RRR and Gangubai Kathiawadi pushed the recovery. Before that, Kashmir Files and now with Bhool Bhulaiya 2, our footfalls and domestic ticket sales are at pre-pandemic level or even better".## With such a highly positive trend as far as theater revenue is concerned, 2022 could turn out to be a golden year for the Indian cinema industry as Rajender Singh Jyala is optimistic that the upcoming movies such as Prithviraj, Brahmastra, and Lal Singh Chaddha, among others will set the ball rolling. ## Media consulting firm Ormax Media's Partner, Gautam Jain, said, "The overall domestic box office collections have crossed the ₹4000 crores gross mark from January to April. This is the highest gross box office collection for January to April since 2018. Given this growth trajectory and looking at the line-up of films slated to release this year, a gross box office collection of ₹12,000 crore looks possible, which would make this year the highest ever in terms of the gross box office [collection]". ## While the revenue of theaters has increased significantly, the overall footfalls remain average as compared to the pre-pandemic level. Explaining why the gross box office revenue is higher than 2019 while footfalls continue to be low, Jain said, "The gross box office collections are higher due to the ticket prices being higher by 15-30% across languages. The ticket prices have increased even in south markets".## Stay tuned...

THE FATE OF BIG SCREENS (OTT vs Theatres - Analysis)

Mumbai, Feb 5, 2022: A movie theatre which is otherwise known as a movie hall, picture house, the silver screen is the place where the audience watches movies of their interest. Indian film industry stands itself among one of the top industries in the world, having produced a large number of movies of each genre. ## Capital Cinema Hall in Mumbai is the oldest cinema theatre in India established in 1879. Currently, there are around 9000 movie theatres in India which include 6327 single screens 3200 multiple plexes as per stats. Movie halls are the best places where the audiences are accustomed to a marvellous experience which helps them overcome their daily stress, anxiety etc. ## The Theatre viewing experience establishes a connection between the viewer and the fantasy movie character. Big screens provide wholesome entertainment that the viewers gets locked in an imaginary world throughout the duration of the movie. ## During the '50s, '60s and the 70's decade movie theatres were the only sources to view movies and they enjoyed a non-competitive and dominant run in business. ## Movies used to run for over a year during these times as there was no competition from ott, television etC. Due to these reasons movies used to generate very High footfalls back then. Movies used to get reruns during that time and a prime example is Sholay which was successful in its all reruns. But as the times passed theatres began to experience competition from other platforms. ## It all started in the 80's decade when piracy came into existence, which eventually lead to people watching movies in VCR doing piracy which affected the silver screens. The footfalls of the movie's started to decline to post this and this was a matter of deep concern for the producers and the theatre owners then. ## The movie Maine Pyar Kiya busted this mythical the belief that footfalls can't be rosen back after it generated more than 4 cr footfalls the main reason for which being its extraordinary content. ## After Maine Pyar Kiya the industry struggled to even touch 3 Cr footfalls until movies like Hum Aapke Hain Kon, DDLJ and Raja Hindustani arrived. Around this time the popularity for television was also increasing rapidly, as a result of that, the producers began to telecast the movie immediately after the theatrical ended which put full stops on re-run trend. ## A larger number of people used to wait till the movie appeared on television as a result of the increase in television demand which further affected the theatre business. The years 2002-2007 witnessed a large increase in multiplex audiences and decline in single Screen audiences reason being the urban friendly content movies which were produced in large amount during this time. ## Rural audiences prefered massy actions movies which were limited during this period due to which single screens had a tough time. Due to this trend in more urban-friendly movies they struggled very much to hit 2 cr footfalls. These instances lead to single screens being on the verge of extinction. ## The movies like Ghajini (2008), Wanted (2009) and Dabangg (2010) broke this dogma and the single screens were revived once again. This encouraged the makers to make such types of the movie's as the audiences were more into this type of stuff. The business was revived very well but it didn't meet the craze it used to have before the 90's because of competition from the rival platforms. ## With the help of content and their mass fan following actors like Salman Khan and Aamir Khan were able to drive mass audiences into the theatres. With its unique storytelling and extraordinary visual experience the movies Bahubali and its sequel Bahubali 2 recreated the magic which the movies of the The '60s and 70's used to do. ## At the present times we are living in an era where theatres are facing huge competition from cheap internet, old enemy television and the biggest enemy Over the top television (ott) in the recent years have established itself as a formidable force to be reckoned with. ## The surge in covid cases and the lockdown helped them in doing so. Many of the movies which were ready for theatrical the release was forced to release in ott. Movies like Radhe and Laxmii which featured Megastar Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar helped out accelerate its growth. ## Many of the theatres are in closing state post-pandemic and theatre owners are facing difficulty in the business The audiences have started shifting themselves to ott platforms more often as it provides quality content at affordable rates within the four walls safety of their homes. The only thing well-wishers of theatres can do right now hopes that situations get better as time passes as the theatre owners are facing huge debts and all the more ott cannot be an alternative for the big screen Visual experience in anyways. ## It's a fact that during this tough unfavourable situation and also senseless content worsening the scenario movies will struggle to even hit 1 cr footfalls in the upcoming times. Actors like Salman Khan and Aamir Khan who enjoy a large solid fan base are in their last lap. ## Actors like Ranbir Kapoor and Ranveer Singh are labelled as new comers despite working in the industry for Over a decade. The industry can save itself only if they produce quality content and also the future of the covid pandemic will also play a major role in this. ## The public too should pledge that they'll avoid piracy and try to watch movies in theatres to get the irreplaceable visual spectacle experience which can relieve them of any mental ailments they are facing which are exactly the purpose of cinema and entertainment industry. ## Many people who work in the entertainment industry and the theatres are going through very rough patches in their lives and are struggling to meet their livelihoods. ## Our audiences can do our bit to contribute towards helping these people, some who are on the verge of suicide due to financial issues by taking an oath to avoid piracy and watch movies at theatres so that these people get their bit. ## Stay tuned.

Andhra forms committee to review cinema ticket prices

Hyderabad, Dec 29, 2021: Amaravati, Dec 28 (IANS) Amid the ongoing row in Andhra Pradesh over ticket prices in cinema theatres, the state government on Tuesday formed a committee to look into the issue. ## After a meeting with film distributors, Cinematography Minister Perni Nani announced that the committee will take a decision on categorisation of theatres and suggest the ticket prices to the government. ## The minister said the panel was formed to resolve the issue and assured that the government will carefully consider its recommendations. ## He said distributors and their associations brought their problems to the government's notice and have demanded a hike in ticket prices. The government has also received similar requests from other sections of the film industry. "All these requests are under our consideration. We will take appropriate decision after receiving the report of the committee," he said. ## Stating that the committee has been formed on the advice of the High Court, he clarified that the government is not adopting any delaying tactics by constituting the committee. He claimed the government's intention was to ensure that the entertainment is accessible to common man at an affordable rate. ## The minister denied that the government is targeting theatre managements and said the action was being taken only against those who are running theatres without permissions or in violation of rules. He said action was taken against 130 theatres. He denied that this has anything to do with the Government Order (GO) 35. ## Under this GO the government had slashed the ticket prices. The High Court on December 14 suspended the GO but the government went for an appeal against the order. The court subsequently ruled that theater owners can apply to the government for revising the ticket prices. ## The minister took exception to actor Nani comparing cinema ticket prices in the state with prices in kirana shops. He hoped that the next time the actor will make a statement with some responsibility. ## He also questioned the right of actor Siddharth to comment on ticket prices in Andhra Pradesh. "He may have made some comment about Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Stalin. He lives in Chennai, pays taxes there so how is he concerned with the ticket prices in Andhra Pradesh," he asked. ## For more and the latest news about Tollywood, stay tuned to us.

Delhi Move To Shut Down Cinemas Will Impede Recovery, Fears Industry

Just as the industry had started celebrating the huge box-office successes of "Spider-Man: No Way Home" and the Allu Arjun-starrer "Pushpa: Part I", and the much-hyped release of the Ranveer Singh-led Kabir Khan film, "83", the Delhi government's order on Tuesday shutting down cinema theatres and multiplexes have come as a big jolt.## The Arvind Kejriwal government took the decision after the Covid-19 positivity rate in the capital rose alarmingly to 0.55 percent on Sunday and 0.68 percent on Monday. It was a part of its yellow alert drill under the Covid Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP).## The makers of the Shahid Kapoor-starrer "Jersey" have already announced that they are postponed the cricket drama's release, which had been slated for Friday, December 31.## Now, the big question is whether the next big-banner release -- S.S. Rajamouli's multi-lingual "RRR" -- will also be affected by the Delhi government's decision, although its primary audiences are in the two Telugu-speaking states.## Trade analysts say Delhi City contributes 7-8 percent of Bollywood's revenue, but their fear is that what happens in the Capital is soon replicated elsewhere, starting with Gurugram and NOIDA.## Responding to the Delhi government's decision, Kamal Gianchandani, President, Multiplex Association of India, said that "it has caused massive uncertainty and could lead to irreparable damage to the Indian Film Industry". The months since March 2020, he emphasized, have been "undeniably the most challenging period faced by Indian cinema theatres in their long history".## Emphasizing the capability of cinema theatres to run shows while following Covid protocols, Gianchandani, who is also the CEO of PVR Pictures Ltd, said: "After being allowed to reopen, cinemas have demonstrated their ability to operate safely for the public and the employees by using the enhanced ventilation systems, raising hygiene standards, and following safety protocols".## He added: "Not a single outbreak of Covid-19 anywhere around the world has been traced to a cinema".## Gianchandani said that instead of closing down cinemas, the Delhi government should consider introducing a "double vaccination requirement" to enter the theatres, "as is the case in some of the other states (including Maharashtra)".## "Alternatively," he added, "the seating capacity restriction of 50 percent can be reintroduced in the cinemas". He called upon the Delhi government "to recognize the unique social, cultural and economic value of the Indian film industry", and to provide "the support it so desperately needs to survive this unprecedented period".## Reflecting on the move, Sumit Kadel, an independent film and trade analyst, said: "Delhi is one of the major markets for the film industry, especially for multiplex-oriented films. The shutting down of cinema theatres in Delhi and imposition of night curfews in states such as Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, and Madhya Pradesh have resulted in the cancellation of night shows".## All this will have a huge negative impact on the business, Kadel said, adding that movies such as Akshay Kumar's "Prithiviraj" from YRF Films, which were due for release in February, might get postponed.## Media and Internet research analyst Karan Taurani said: "This will create panic among producers, who will decide yet again to defer their release dates, given the uncertainty regarding timings/restrictions." Taurani added that "a decent film" such as "83" had been affected because the "cinema-going sentiment of audiences has taken a big hit in the last 10 days".## He continued: "This will have an adverse impact on windowing terms (four weeks at present and expected to return to the industry average of six to eight weeks by March 2022), distributor share arrangements, and consumer sentiment".## The occupancy percentage at cinema theatres, in fact, has been down to 60 to 30 percent (for big and small films, respectively) of the pre-Covid levels.## Taurani also shed light on how this would affect ticket pricing. He said: "PVR and Inox may bottom at a price point of 25-30 percent above their March 2020 bottom (PVR/Inox at Rs 1,100 and Rs 280, respectively), if the third wave isn't expected to be as severe and dreadful".## Nonetheless, he cautioned, recovery will be delayed because it is up to the states to revise occupancy caps and restrictions.## Stay tuned...

India's Biggest Theater Screen In Andhra Pradesh Stop Operations Due To Low Ticket Prices

Nellore, December 25 - V Epiq, the largest theater screen of India, has shut down its operation due to the low ticket prices. Situated in Sullurpet, Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh, the V Epiq screen is 100ft in width and 85ft in height, and is one of the largest in the world. ## It has come to the light that the V Epiq screen has suspended operations from yesterday (December 24) onwards due to Andhra Pradesh Government's restrictions on Ticket Prices. It is reported that the highest price of a movie ticket in the theater was just Rs. 35, which is among the lowest in the state. It was the third-largest screen in the world at the time of its opening. And now, the screen had to shut as it was not being able to generate enough revenue to stay open.## The situation of theaters in Andhra Pradesh is getting worst day by day as the government is looking in a revenge mood. Filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri Urged Bollywood Leaders To Stand Up And Fight For The Survival Of Cinemas

Mumbai, September 6, 2021: National award-winning filmmaker, Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri has penned down a hard-hitting note to the Bollywood leaders, who remain silent as cinemas are closed in Maharashtra. The Tashkent Files director, in an open letter, urged Bollywood leaders to stand up and ensure that government listens and opens up cinemas. ## Theaters in Maharashtra are closed since April 2021, even though, most of the States have allowed theaters to operate. Vivek Agnihotri, in his letter, highlights the unjustified closure of cinema halls in the biggest movie market for Hindi films. He also mentioned that because of the silence of B-towners and the rise of OTTs, the Hindi film industry is going through an existential crisis. ## The filmmaker note down key points, referring to Bollywood artists and filmmakers, as follows - ## 1. You have earned hundreds of crores from your films which released in theaters.## 2. You have earned hundreds of crores because people paid for your movies.## 3. You are leader because you earned hundreds of crore and have a clout, experience, money and power.## 4. You can not just keep the perks of being a leader/star and keep quiet when there is a crisis. You know Bollywood is also the soft power of India.## 5. You know that Bollywood going through an existential crisis for three reasons: a] Locked theaters b] OTTs, and c] Public anger towards you.## 6. Imagine you are a big corporation and your brand faces the same situation. Will you go in hiding and wait for the situation to improve or you will firefight it?## 7. You haven't done anything except for keeping quiet and let destiny take its course. The general assumption in the industry is that people are dumb and they will again fall at the feet of the stars or at the box office as soon as movies release again. You are absolutely wrong and myopic.## 8. This is the real test of your creative integrity. The world is watching whether you are going to fight to save cinema or you'll do it only when your film is stuck.## 9, I hope you realize that because of your inaction, almost all Indian content is slowly being owned by just 3-4 American corporations. Soon, there will be no Indian content. This is how East India Company took over India. I am not saying this will happen but 'something like this is already happening. Just think why you are responsible for this.## 10. You want to be treated like leaders in happy times, celebration times, success times. Now when there is a crisis, you got to stand up and give confidence to millions of workers that you'll lead the fight for their livelihood.## 11. Please speak up and ensure that Government listen and #OpenUpCinemas.## To, Dear Bollywood leaders: …Because extraordinary times need extraordinary vision, courage and leadership…#OpenUpCinemas pic.twitter.com/xDf9lhKNwy— Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri (@vivekagnihotri) September 6, 2021 ## Stay tuned...
