Mumbai, April 1 (IANS) With Ramanand Sagar's popular eighties mythological serial "Ramayan" back on Doordarshan, the Indian audience has got a chance to revisit the epic story all over again. The show has set off social media discussion, too.## The discussion over the past 24 hours or so has taken a gender-based turn with some viewers calling queen Kaikeyi a b**ch and hurling abuses at her maid Manthara. As the badmouthing continued, these two characters incidentally kept trending on Twitter.## There has been a debate centered on the feminism quotient in the show, too. While some users felt "Ramayan" did not mete out fair treatment to its female characters, others felt the storyline champions women's empowerment.## Hailing the storyline as an instance of women's empowerment, a viewer tweeted: "We were so progressive even 7000 yrs back, it's amazing. Sita was a very intelligent & warrior woman. Kaikeyi wasn't only a warrior, she was Saarthi of King Dashrath in Devasur Sangram, which was not at all an easy task. True women empowerment. #Ramayan"## Another viewer shared: "Seeing Ramayan today, I am reminded of first female drivers were from India. Kaikeyi and Satyabhama."## Still, others reminded that Kaikeyi was no pushover as a character. "Ramayana and equality. Guys, remember that Kaikeyi was the first woman in combat," a user tweeted.## However, not everyone feels that the story upholds "women's empowerment", and not everyone shared kind words for the antagonist Kaikeyi.## A viewer opined: "Kaikeyi was a class A b**ch, wasn't she? Asking for her son to be crowned king was alright, but sending Ram to exile was evil at a whole new level. Don't bash me, I won't take it back!"## Another viewer expressed: "Kaikeyi was the most unfortunate character in the entire epic. The poor lady loved Ram more than her own son, went to battle for her King, was also probably the most intelligent of the Queens & yet, in 1 moment of clouded thinking, she ruined it for everyone. What a beautiful lesson!"## Still, another said: "A woman can make or destroy a home. Hyderabad, March 26 (IANS) Telugu superstar Chiranjeevi is finally on social media and his following is, not surprisingly, phenomenal already. In less than 24 hours that he joined Twitter and Instagram on the occasion of Ugadi -- the Telugu new year -- on Wednesday, he has managed to garner mega numbers.## On Instagram, he debuted with the handle @chiranjeevikonidela and has 438k followers by early Thursday morning. He started out posting a picture of himself, followed by one where he strikes a happy pose with his mother, Anjana Devi.## His Twitter account is called @KChiruTweets. The count of followers was already closing in on the 100,000 marks by Thursday morning.## On Twitter, too, he posted the same picture with his mother as on Instagram.## "Home Time... Mom Time !! Mumbai, March 22 (IANS) As India is observes Janata Curfew on Sunday, Union Minister for the Ministry of Women and Child Development Smriti Irani encouraged netizens to participate in 'online antakshari' to fight boredom amid coronavirus lockdown. ## "We are a 130 crore family so tag karna mushkil hai ki next kaun gaana uthayega isiliye sing / tweet a song coz ye apni marzi wala #TwitterAntakshari hai," Smriti tweeted. ## Seeing her tweet, many celebs, including Karan Johar and Ekta Kapoor participated in the game. ## Filmmaker Karan Johar shared that antakshari is his favourite game to pass time. Not only this, he also mentioned his favourite song "Lag jaa gale". ## "Helloji! Antakshari is my favourite time pass activity! Seattle, March 19 (IANS) When it comes to fake news on social media platforms, some users outright ignore it, some take it at face value, some investigate whether it is true and some get suspicious of it but then choose to ignore it. ## Social media platforms, such as Facebook and Twitter, provide people with a lot of information, but it's getting harder and harder to tell what's real and what's not. ## "We wanted to understand what people do when they encounter fake news or misinformation in their feeds. Do they notice it? What do they do about it?" said senior study author Franziska Roesner, an associate professor at University of Washington in Seattle. ## "There are a lot of people who are trying to be good consumers of information and they're struggling. If we can understand what these people are doing, we might be able to design tools that can help them," added Roesner in a paper accepted to the 2020 ACM CHI conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems. ## The team watched 25 participants scroll through their Facebook or Twitter feeds while a Google Chrome extension randomly added debunked content on top of some of the real posts. ## Participants had various reactions to encountering a fake post. ## Previous research on how people interact with misinformation asked participants to examine content from a researcher-created account, not from someone they chose to follow. ## "That might make people automatically suspicious," said lead author Christine Geeng, a doctoral student. "We made sure that all the posts looked like they came from people that our participants followed". ## The researchers either installed the extension on the participant's laptop or the participant logged into their accounts on the researcher's laptop, which had the extension enabled. ## The team told the participants that the extension would modify their feeds -- the researchers did not say how -- and would track their likes and shares during the study -- though, in fact, it wasn't tracking anything. ## The extension was removed from participants' laptops at the end of the study. ## Participants could not actually like or share the fake posts. ## On Twitter, a "retweet" would share the real content beneath the fake post. ## The one time a participant did retweet content under the fake post, the researchers helped them undo it after the study was over. On Facebook, the like and share buttons didn't work at all. ## After the participants encountered all the fake posts -- nine for Facebook and seven for Twitter -- the researchers stopped the study and explained what was going on. ## "Our goal was not to trick participants or to make them feel exposed. We wanted to normalize the difficulty of determining what's fake and what's not," said Geeng. ## While this study was small, it does provide a framework for how people react to misinformation on social media. ## The researchers can use this as a starting point to seek interventions to help people resist misinformation in their feeds. ## For more and the latest news about Lifestyle, stay tuned to us.
