Chennai, January 11 - The Pongal 2023 festival weekend kicks off on a blockbuster note, thanks to the two most anticipated Tamil tentpoles Thalapathy Vijay's Varisu and Ajith Kumar's Thunivu.## Telugu director Vamshi Paidipally directed "Varisu" while H. Vinoth helmed "Thunivu". Since both movies came on the same day, it was certain that no new box office record would be created but couldn't stop both films to bring combined joy to movie theaters and the makers. ## As per the early estimates, the combined opening day box office collection for "Varisu" and "Thunivu" is over 50 crores gross domestically. Thalapathy Vijay-starrer, as expected, is the biggest movie of the day but only just as Ajith-fronted comes really close to it. ## "Varisu" grossed an estimated 26-28 crores on the first day, and this includes an estimated 16-18 crores gross in the home state Tamil Nadu. On the other hand, "Thunivu" grossed an estimated 25-27 crores all of India, including 17-19 crores in Tamil Nadu. ## Outside Tamil Nadu, "Varisu" leads over "Thunivu", as per the estimates. In Karnataka, the former grossed an estimated 5 crores while later scoring around 3.50 crores gross. "Varisu" has a very good opening in Kerala, grossing approx. 3.50 crores, on the other hand, "Thunivu" grossed approx. 1.50 crores in the state.
