Among Big Spectacles, A Little Chidiya Spreads Its Wings

Mumbai, May 29 - In an era where the theatrical business feels uncertain and dominated by large-scale spectacles, arrives a quiet exception, Chidiya — a small, heartfelt film that has taken a decade-long flight to reach cinemas. ## Produced by Faqhrul Husaini under the Smiley Films banner and distributed by Reliance Entertainment, Chidiya is set to release in selected Indian cinemas on 30 May 2025. Written and directed by Mehran Amrohi, the film was completed nearly ten years ago. ## The film had its world premiere at the Zlín International Film Festival in the Czech Republic — one of the most respected global festivals for children's cinema — and went on to win awards in India, Russia, and New York. ## "It's a film that aged with grace", says producer Faqhrul Husaini. "We always believed that if the story had heart, it would find its place." ## Set in a modest Mumbai chawl, Chidiya follows two young brothers, Shanu and Bua, who dream of building a badminton court out of a junkyard. With nothing but hope and imagination, their journey becomes a quiet metaphor for resilience and childhood defiance. ## The cast features acclaimed actors Vinay Pathak, Amruta Subhash, and Inaamulhaq, alongside newcomers Svar Kamble and Ayush Pathak in standout child performances. The music, composed by Shailendra Barve and lyrics written by Mehran Amrohi and Jitendra Joshi, reflects the film’s emotional and lyrical world. ## Backing the film's theatrical release is Reliance Entertainment, where Amit Awasthi says, "In today's time, only content is working — and on that front, Chidiya is very strong. It's a film that connects emotionally, and we're proud to support it." ## With a runtime of 115 minutes and a U certificate, Chidiya will open in select cinemas with a regionally focused rollout. The marketing strategy stays aligned with the film's spirit — gentle, nostalgic, and discovery-driven. As major films chase noise, Chidiya hopes to find hearts. ## ## Stay tuned...

'420 IPC' director Manish Gupta unties the film's intricate knots

Mumbai, Dec 27 (IANS) Manish Gupta's crime film '420 IPC' starring Vinay Pathak, Ranvir Shorey, and Gul Panag which was released recently has been garnering a positive response for its narrative style-driven through the intricacies of the Indian Penal Code. ## Manish, whose credits include films like 'The Stoneman Murders' (writer and director), 'Sarkar' (writer) and 'Section 375' (writer), recently spoke with IANS and unraveled what went into the making of a film that explores the layers of courtroom proceedings in a financial fraud case. ## Explaining the germ of '420 IPC', he says, "I'd got the idea for '420 IPC' during the three years of extensive research that I'd carried out for my previous courtroom drama 'Section 375' during which I came across court procedures involved in economic offence cases - which I found to be an unexplored premise for a film." ## He adds, "Carrying out further research, I discovered that people with upper economic status and a high pedigree of intelligence and education are involved in economic crimes. So the court proceedings involve more brain work, thus lending a more cerebral premise for a film." ## Manish himself took the onus of the film's research as he says, "There was no research team. I carried out the research personally and singlehandedly by attending numerous court hearings and interviewing lawyers, court staff members, policemen, etc. I'd already done a heavy amount of research for 'Section 375', so I had a lot of basic research material already with me." ## Commenting on the value that his lead actors Vinay and Ranvir add to the film, he mentions, "Vinay and Ranvir infuse a lot of believability into the narrative. Both are brilliant actors which goes without saying but at the same time, both have the ability to absorb their characters so well that the viewer sees a real person, rather than an actor." ## Probe him if there were a lot of improvisations on the sets, he quips, "Not really, because my scripts are usually written with great clarity. In '420 IPC', as in all my films, since I was the director as well as the screenplay and dialogue writer, so while writing, I'd already directed the film on paper." ## Looking at his filmography, one can easily say that the filmmaker-writer has a knack for grey stories and characters. Explaining his fascination with grey shades, he furnishes the closing answer, "In reality, no person is completely good or bad. All human beings possess good and bad qualities, although to varying degrees. That's exactly what I depict in my films." ##

There was a massive demand for the sequel of Disney+Hotstar's action espionage thriller web series, Special Ops, headlined by Kay Kay Menon. Bringing Mithun da, Naseer sir together was big deal for me: Vivek Agnihotri

Mumbai, April 12 (IANS) Director Vivek Agnihotri's "The Tashkent Files" released a year ago on April 12, and he recounted the experience of making the film on Saturday.## The story of the film claims to address the mysterious death of late Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri by weaving fiction with facts, and it features Mithun Chakraborty, Naseeruddin Shah, Pankaj Tripathi, Shweta Basu Prasad, Rajesh Sharma, and Vinay Pathak among others.## Agnihotri confesses bringing Naseer and Mithun together in his film was a "big deal" for him. Incidentally, the two veterans had already worked together in four films before "The Tashkent Files" -- in "Khwab" (1980), "Hum Paanch" (1981), "Swami Dada" (1982), and "Ghulami" (1985) -- but that was 33 years ago.## "Actually, that could have gone against the film if all these huge talents were not utilised correctly. Every actor who came on board, came with conviction. Of course, bringing Mithun da and Naseeruddin sir was a big deal for me. Initially, I was scared. They did not work together for 30 years for whatever personal reason. But when I went to them with the script, we were fortunate that they did the film. Naseer sir smiled when I said that Mithun da will be there in the film. Mithun Da did not say anything when I said that we also cast Naseer sir," Agnihotri recalled.## In the film, the two senior actors played a pair of seasoned fictional politicians.## The director added: "Both of them are genius and we know that, but their acting styles are very different. Naseer would come preparing every single dialogue, and he likes rehearsing. Mithun da likes to bring spontaneity in his performance. Since their approaches are different I was thinking how would I match up -- what if there was tension between two veterans?"## Remembering the first scene both actors that he directed, Agnihotri said: "That scene did not have much dialogue. I realised that as a director I have to make sure I directed them in a way to bring out the best from them. Once I started talking more, there was fluidity among three of us and that translated in their performance. Rest, we can see in the film!"## Agnihotri claims his film is being highly viewed on OTT during the ongoing lockdown. "I think it happened because when the film released, it had a difficult release. We got a limited number of screens because the big-budget multistarrer 'Kalank' also released around the time. Our film was a serious one, and many film critics refused to review the film. Surely that affected initially. The bigger win happened with its digital release. People, especially the youth, started talking about the very essence of the story -- search for truth and right to truth," claimed Agnihotri, adding: "Unless you question the system and debate, we cannot remain as thinking individual."## For more and latest news about Bollywood, stay tuned with us.

Karan Tacker: I see no reason to look down upon TV content

Mumbai, April 7 (IANS) Popular television actor Karan Tacker, who is being praised for his debut digital role in "Special OPs", says that TV and digital entertainment can be celebrated parallel to each other, and there is no point looking down upon television content.## Asked if he thought TV content was "regressive", Karan told IANS: "I believe that every content has its own audience. There are people who love watching TV and that is why there are so many television shows and channels that are doing exceptionally well, business-wise too. Otherwise, why would someone make TV shows? At the same time, there will be an audience that will go to the theatre and watch a film. Digital shows are mostly for personal viewing and we are building the audience there. I see these three medium are growing parallel."## The actor also explained: "If someone is tagging content on TV as ‘regressive', it is their opinion. It is the way they look at it or look down upon TV content. At the end of the day, all these mediums are viewership based. If there are no viewers, makers will stop creating. We all can see that every filmstar comes on TV shows to promote their films. Why? Because they know about the reach of the medium. Also, every award show is telecast on TV. How can we discount these facts? I think that says it all."## "Special OPs" is a spy-thriller, streaming on Hotstar. The series also features Kay Kay Menon, Meher Vij, Sana Khan, Saiyami Kher, Vinay Pathak, and Vipul Gupta.## "I have started my career on TV and I am proud of shows that I have appeared in. I am a proud TV actor," Karan signed off.## For more and latest news about TV, stay tuned with us.

3 things Karan Tacker learnt from Neeraj Pandey

Mumbai, April 1 (IANS) Celebrated television actor Karan Tacker, who made his digital debut with the web series "Special OPs", says he learned three very important lessons from the director of the show, Neeraj Pandey.## "I would say dedication, discipline and clarity are the three things I have learned from Neeraj sir. He really knows what he wants as a storyteller, what he wants from his actors, and how he will use it in post-production. The clarity he has in his mind is really worth learning from! After the shoot, when we would rest, he would sit with the production guys to discuss the next days' shoot. I think during production, he slept for about four to five hours because he was working constantly," Karan told IANS.## "Also, he is an emotionally sensitive person with a sense of humor. One should really work closely to understand him! It's fun!" added the actor.## "Special OPs" is spy-thriller streaming on Hotstar, and the show also features Kay Kay Menon, Meher Vij, Sana Khan, Saiyami Kher, Vinay Pathak, and Vipul Gupta. The story of the show is set against the backdrop of Parliament attack in Delhi that took place in 2001.## Giving an insight into his role, Karan said: "My character Farooq Ali is a RAW agent recruited by Himmat Singh (played by Kay Kay Menon). He is always on the field with clarity on what he wants and has his strategy. The character is very well written -- in fact, not just mine but of all of us. Neeraj sir is such a great scriptwriter. We all see the kind of vision he has, in all his films. But as an actor, it is great how one can deliver so much just by following the script when it is well written."## The show has been shot across various locations including Azerbaijan, Turkey, and Jordan.## Asked about the difficult part of shooting such an action-packed show, the actor replied: "I have to mention one of the outdoors we were shooting in Jordan. In the show, it shows summer but we actually shot in the winter. The temperature was around minus two and I was just wearing a shirt and pants and no winter gear, as we were showing summer. In the extreme cold, it was tough to mouth dialogues because I was shivering!"## He added: "I have a fear of height, and there is this scene where my character Farooq attempts suicide. I did that stunt by myself! It was a 25-story building and I did the scene. Although there was a team of people along with the stuntmen, I thought if I do it myself it would look real. But when I stood there -- Oh God! Overcoming the fear of height was a thing for me."## Stay tuned...
