Post-Pandemic Tamil Cinema Box Office: Thalapathy Vijay Leads With 1800 Crore, Rajinikanth Follows Closely in Second Place

Chennai, August 26 - Tamil cinema has looked like a completely different beast at the box office in the post-pandemic era, where the industry delivered massive results in India and overseas. While there is still one missing piece (1000 crores grosser), the industry has witnessed three 500+ crore grossers, a milestone, which was achieved only once before the health crisis. Amid the rising popularity of Tamil cinema, two names continue to dominate the industry — Thalapathy Vijay and Superstar Rajinikanth, who are miles ahead of the rest of the others. Between 2021 and 2025, the two megastars have collectively grossed nearly 3,400 crore worldwide, proving their unmatched star power and consistent ability to draw audiences to theatres. Thalapathy Vijay leads the chart with an estimated 1,800 crore gross from his five films released after the pandemic. Starting with Master, with blockbusters like Beast, Varisu, Leo, and The GOAT, Vijay has delivered two 300+ crore grossers (Leo and The GOAT), with Varisu missed the milestone by a couple of crores, while Master and Beast finished over 200 crores globally, strengthening his position as the number one star of Tamil cinema in terms of box office pull. Vijay's ability to cater to both mass and family audiences has ensured strong openings and sustained runs globally. Leo, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, remains his biggest grosser with 606 crores worldwide. The actor has one more film, Jana Nayagan, on Pongal 2026, before he hangs up his boots to join politics full-time. With his decision of not doing films anymore, the industry will be up without its biggest crowd-puller, someone who was the only challenge to superstar Rajinikanth. The 75-year-old Rajinikanth is not far behind Vijay in terms of delivering massive box office results. The veteran actor's films (including Lal Salaam) have amassed around 1600 crore worldwide during the same period. Movies like Annaatthe, Jailer, Vettaiyan, and his latest gangster action drama Coolie have reaffirmed Rajinikanth's status as the ultimate crowd-puller. His films continue to shatter records with massive openings, particularly in Tamil Nadu, and also enjoy remarkable runs in overseas markets. In the post-COVID period, Rajinikanth has delivered two record 500+ crores grossers (Jailer and Coolie), while Vettaiyan finished around 250 crores, and Annaatthe missed the double century mark by around 28 crores gross. Jailer (605 crores) remains the biggest grosser of the superstar during the period. Going ahead, Thalaivaar has a potential record-breaking blockbuster in the pipeline, including Jailer 2, and a multistarrer film with Lokesh Kanagaraj. The numbers underline how Tamil cinema has become a driving force in Indian box office collections post-COVID, with both Vijay and Rajinikanth proving their supremacy. Rajinikanth will most probably overtake Vijay with the kind of films he has, especially with Vijay retiring from films after Jana Nayagan. While Tamil cinema will be without Thalapathy, Thalaivaar is expected to fill his void in the long run. Stay tuned...

Rajinikanth Starrer Coolie Crosses 300 Crore in India, Beats Thalapathy Vijay's The GOAT, and Joins Elite Tamil List of Jailer, Leo, and Two More

Chennai, August 25 - Superstar Rajinikanth's latest release Coolie has stormed past the 300 crore mark in India within just 11 days of release, becoming only the 5th Tamil movie of all-time to achieve the feat. It has joined the elite 300 crores club, which also features 2.0, Leo, Jailer, and Ponniyin Selvan: Part 1. The Lokesh Kanagaraj directorial opened to massive hype and lived up to the expectations, setting the cash registers ringing right through the opening weekend. But after that, the movie went off track, failing to build on the big opening weekend collection. Crossing 300 crore in just 11 days places Coolie among the fastest Tamil films to achieve the landmark. By doing this, it has crossed the lifetime total of Thalapathy Vijay's The GOAT, which grossed approximately 296 crores domestically last year. With Coolie joining the 300 crore domestic club, Rajinikanth now shares the stage with himself - Jailer (408.50 crores), and 2.0 (519 crores)**, Vijay's Leo (402 crores), and director Mani Ratnam's multistarrer Ponniyin Selvan - 1 (313 crores). Director Shankar's sci-fi actioner 2 Point 0 continues to remain the biggest domestic Tamil grosser with around 520 crores. Produced by Sun Pictures, Coolie will surpass PS-1 in the coming days to become the 4th biggest Tamil grosser in India and is likely to finish with this position. The gangster action drama, despite breaching this milestone, has clearly underperformed and will end up as a flop venture. Stay tuned...

Rajinikanth's Coolie Takes a Tumble at Global Box Office in Second Weekend Kollywood

Rajinikanth's Coolie Takes a Tumble at Global Box Office in Second Weekend

Chennai, August 25 - There was no respite for superstar Rajinikanth's Coolie, which witnessed a sharp drop of around 90% from the thunderous opening frame at the worldwide box office. The movie did show some momentum with growth over Saturday and Sunday, but it was not enough to cover the lost ground it suffered during the weekdays. Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, the gangster action drama grossed an estimated ₹39-40 crores at the worldwide box office in the second weekend, compared to around 385 crores in the first frame. The drop is around 90% which is beyond repair. The film's total collection after 11 days is around 480 crores worldwide. The growth during the weekend, however, shows that Coolie will manage to surpass 500 crores worldwide, a milestone which once looked like a cake walk before it became an uphill task with the weekdays' trajectory. After the record-breaking opening weekend, the film managed only around 54 crores from Monday to Thursday, which made the second weekend growth negligible. It would have been nice had the second weekend drop been around 75%, but that couldn't be possible due to the weak trend after the opening weekend. Through the second Sunday, the film has grossed approximately 305 crores in India and 175 crores overseas, heading towards a total of around 525 crores at the end of its run. Coolie will end up as a box office flop, despite possibly grossing over 500 crores worldwide, which would make it only the fourth Tamil title ever to achieve this feat. The expectations were high from this Lokesh Kanagaraj directorial, but poor reviews and mixed audience reception didn't allow the film to fly at the box office. Stay tuned...

Rajinikanth's Coolie Conquers the North American Box Office, Becomes Biggest Tamil Grosser By Beating Jailer

Los Angeles, August 24 - Superstar Rajinikanth's Coolie may not have performed as expected at the Indian box office, but the gangster action drama has taken the North American box office by storm, and created history by becoming the highest-grossing Tamil movie of all time there. Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, Coolie has so far grossed approximately $6.72 million (58.65 crores) in North America, which makes it the biggest Tamil grosser in this region, according to the official update from the makers. By doing this, it has beaten Rajinikanth's own blockbuster Jailer. There is a difference between the trade and the official estimated collection of Jailer regarding the North American market. Released in 2023, Nelson Dilipkumar's directorial had grossed $7.25 million (60+ crores) in NA, as per the trade estimates, but the latest update from the makers paints a different picture. Jailer was also produced by Sun Pictures and was distributed by Prime Media in North America. Despite the record-breaking run in North America, trade debates that Coolie failed to use the full potential of it there, especially after $3 million premiere day. There was a massive hype for this, but the poor reviews and mixed word of mouth cut short its potential. At the worldwide box office, Coolie has clearly underperformed as it has been struggling to touch 500 crores worldwide, despite the biggest opening weekend of 385 crores for a Tamil film. In 11 days, the movie is expected to be around 478-480 crores gross. The film is expected to finish its run with around 525 crores worldwide. Stay tuned...

Rajinikanth's Coolie Joins Elite Top 5 Tamil Grossers Amid Underperformance

Chennai, August 23 - It has been a week of joy and, at the same time, disappointment for superstar Rajinikanth's gangster action drama Coolie, and amid all this, the film has entered the all-time top 5 biggest grossers of Tamil cinema at the worldwide box office. Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, Coolie had a record-breaking opening day, followed by the opening weekend, but it dropped drastically during the weekdays, which was expected, given the poor reviews and mixed word of mouth. But at the same time, it comes as a shock to the industry, which was anticipating it to become the biggest grosser of the film. Nonetheless, amid the disappointment of not achieving the ultimate goal, Coolie will still finish as one of the biggest Tamil grossers of all time. On its 10th day, the Rajinikanth-starrer surpassed the lifetime collection of Thalapathy Vijay's The GOAT (457 crores), and became the 5th biggest Tamil grosser of all-time. Ideally, Coolie should have done 500 crores or much more by now, but the mixed reception cut short its potential. The movie is now eyeing the lifetime collection of around 525 crores worldwide, which is nowhere near the high expectations trade had from it. Rajinikanth, meanwhile, now has three films in the top 5 biggest Tamil grossers. The legendary actor's sci-fi actioner 2 Point 0 remains the biggest Tamil grosser with around 700 crores, while his Jailer is the third in the list with around 605 crores. Vijay's Leo is the second biggest Tamil blockbuster with 606 crores, while Mani Ratnam's historical epic Ponniyin Selvan - 1 (488 crores) is currently the 4th in the list. Stay tuned...

Double Trouble: Pradeep Ranganathan's LIK and Dude Set for a Diwali 2025 Box Office Clash

Chennai, August 22 - Young Tamil filmmaker-turned-actor Pradeep Ranganathan, who has impressed one and all with his choice of films so far, is heading for an unusual situation in his career, where he will be clashing with himself at the box office this Diwali. ## The rising star, who earned immense popularity with Love Today and Dragon, will now see two of his upcoming films, Love Insurance Kompany (LIK) and Dude, releasing on the same festive weekend of Diwali 2025. There were reports that Dude would be postponed to next year, but the makers stuck to the Diwali release. ## The announcement has taken fans by surprise, as it is rare for an actor to have two films competing directly against each other. While LIK, directed by Vignesh Shivan, is a science fiction romantic comedy entertainer in Pradeep's signature quirky style, Dude reportedly explores a fresher, mass-oriented space, promising something completely different for audiences. ## The Diwali holiday frame is such a massive weekend for any film in India; hence, releasing two films of an actor is definitely going to be a tricky situation, especially if both films receive favourable audience reception. With Pradeep’s growing fan base and strong youth connect, the festive season could still prove beneficial, as audiences might flock to theatres for both releases, but if the makers still stick to the release, there will be consequences. ## Whatever the outcome, Diwali 2025 is set to be a landmark moment for Pradeep Ranganathan's career, as he attempts to pull off what very few actors have dared – facing himself at the box office. After from his, there are other films which will hit the big screen during the same weekend. ## Stay tuned...

Thalapathy Vijay's Leo Claims First-Week Box Office Crown, Beating Rajinikanth's Coolie

Chennai, August 21 - The Tamil box office once again has its say in the battle between two superstars — Rajinikanth and Thalapathy Vijay. While both Coolie and Leo opened to massive numbers, the difference in their trajectory after the opening weekend has sparked an interesting comparison. ## Rajinikanth's Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, stormed the global box office with a big 385 crore gross in its 4-day extended opening weekend. However, the film's momentum slowed in the following weekdays, with its 8-day first-week total reaching around 440 crore worldwide, adding just around 55 crores from Monday to Thursday. ## On the other hand, Thalapathy Vijay's Leo, also directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, had the opening weekend of 356.50 crores, but unlike Coolie, the movie remained solid in the post-weekend first week, adding another 120 crores gross worldwide from Monday to Thursday, for around 477 crores gross first week collection. ## The word of mouth for both films was mixed, with slightly better for Leo, but still, the Thalapathy Vijay-starrer scored more than 2x of Coolie from Monday to Thursday, despite losing the opening weekend race to win the week. Leo, which was behind Coolie by around 30 crores gross after the opening weekend, leads by around 27 crores after the first week. ## The comparison highlights how post-weekend word-of-mouth and audience reception can define a film's box office journey. It also shows which of Rajinikanth and Vijay has a greater influence over the audience, given their similar reception. But one has to admire the longevity of superstar Rajinikanth, who, at the age of 75, is ruling the box office like any other superstar at their peak. ## Stay tuned...

Coolie vs Leo Box Office: Rajinikanth Rules the First Weekend, Thalapathy Vijay Dominates the First Week

Chennai, August 21 - In the contrasting turn of events, Thalapathy Vijay's Leo is set to remain the biggest opening week grosser of Tamil cinema, a title which was threatened to be taken by superstar Rajinikanth's latest blockbuster Coolie. Both films registered historic collections, but their trajectories highlight the difference in audience pull during the weekend and week numbers. ## In the opening weekend, Rajinikanth's Coolie took a clear lead by emerging as the biggest Tamil weekend grosser, with approximately 385 crore, edging past Leo's 356.50 crore opening weekend. The Superstar's mass appeal and festive holiday advantage ensured a record-breaking start despite mixed reviews. ## However, the equation shifted over the first full week, where things have taken a drastic turn. After the record opening weekend, Coolie fell sharply during the weekdays, as its first 7 days collection is around 430 crores gross worldwide. On the other hand, Leo showcased better consistency with solid holds, collecting approximately 464 crore worldwide in the same span. ## ## The strong weekday hold allowed Vijay's film to claim the biggest Tamil first-week grosser of all time. Even with the extended 8-day opening week run, Leo maintained its edge with 476 crore, outpacing Coolie, which is expected to be around 440 crores 8-day haul worldwide. ## Trade experts believe this pattern reinforces a long-observed trend: Rajinikanth films ignite explosive openings, while Vijay’s recent outings have demonstrated stronger weekday legs. Ultimately, both Coolie and Leo have cemented their place in box office history, but the battle will be remembered as a weekend win for Rajinikanth and a week-long triumph for Thalapathy Vijay. ## Note: Rajinikanth's 2.0's numbers are not considered in this article, as there were a lot of discrepancies regarding the film's South Indian language collection. ## Stay tuned...

Box Office: No All-Time Grossing Tamil Record For Rajinikanth's Coolie

Chennai, August 20 - Superstar Rajinikanth and director Lokesh Kanagaraj's much-hyped collaboration Coolie ignited hope of emerging biggest Tamil grosser of all-time, after the record numbers during the extended Independence Day weekend. The film set social media abuzz and drew massive crowds, cementing Rajinikanth's dominance at the box office yet again. ## But as they say, all that glitters is not gold, and that's what's happening with Coolie. Despite the spectacular start, the film is now showing signs of slowing down. With big drops during weekdays, it makes it almost impossible for the film to challenge the all-time Tamil box office record grosser, which is Rajinikanth's own hit 2 Point 0, which itself underperformed. ## The gangster action drama, after the record weekend of 385 crores worldwide, has dropped heavily on the first two working days with a combined total of around 33-35 crores worldwide. After 6 days, the film's total collection stands at around 418-420 crores worldwide, which could have easily been around 450 crores with a positive reception, which it did not have. ## Industry trackers, who were predicting Coolie to become the biggest Tamil grosser before release, suggest that it may wrap up its global run under 550 crore. It might stretch its total a little higher, but for that, the film has to show solid legs, which don't seem to be happening with the current trend. While 500 crores worldwide is still a big milestone, Coolie will fall short of the expectations, which is disappointing. ## Trade analysts note that after its historic opening, collections in certain overseas territories and the Hindi belt have not been as strong as expected, which has capped its long-term potential. In North America, where the movie had a huge weekend, the weekdays' collection dropped drastically, even below Hrithik Roshan Jr. NTR's War, which had an underwhelming run there so far. ## That said, Coolie has already achieved several milestones. It became the fastest Tamil film to cross the 100 crores, 200 crores, and 300 crores mark worldwide, apart from becoming the biggest Tamil opener and weekend grosser of all time. The movie also reinforced Rajinikanth's unmatched star power, as he continues to deliver films that not only perform in India but also create a stir in international markets. ## In conclusion, Coolie, despite the early promises, will not create the history, everyone thought it would. While it will still be among the top 5 biggest Tamil grossers of all time, the movie will end up as a flop or an average affair at the box office. The onus is now on Rajinikanth's next, which is the highly-awaited Jailer 2, to do the unfinished job. ## Stay tuned...

Lokesh Kanagaraj To Push Kaithi 2 Back Again To Direct A Dream Combo of Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan?

Chennai, August 19 - Director Lokesh Kanagaraj might be up for another reshuffle in his future film timeline, and if that happens, actor Karthi, and more than him, the fans of the Lokesh Cinematic Universe (LCU) will have to wait longer for the much-awaited sequel to Kaithi. ## After the blockbuster Leo, Lokesh teamed up with superstar Rajinikanth for the gangster action drama Coolie, which is currently playing in theatres. For a long time, the filmmaker had confirmed his plans to return to Kaithi 2 with Karthi after completing Coolie. But now, the latest buzz suggests that a different, and perhaps even bigger, project might take priority. ## The latest blockbuster buzz in Tamil media suggests that Lokesh is planning one of India's biggest multistarrers and has reportedly narrated a two-hero script to the superstars Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan for the same. The legendary duo is said to have given their nod, reportedly asking the filmmaker to move ahead with the project. ## Originally reportedly planned before the COVID-19 pandemic, this ambitious film is said to revolve around two ageing gangsters in a large-scale cinematic adventure, and will likely be produced by Kamal Haasan’s Raaj Kamal Films International (RKFI). If reports are to be believed, it could be Lokesh's immediate next. ## The news is indeed massive, and perhaps the biggest collaboration of Indian cinema in the recent past. But at the same time, it also brings a bittersweet feeling for fans awaiting Kaithi 2, wanting to see Lokesh get back to his strong zone of Lokesh Cinematic Universe (LCU). ## The stars are probably not aligning for Kaithi 2, for which the script is said to be ready, subject to some changes. Interestingly, it was supposed to be made before Lokesh's Leo with Thalapathy Vijay, but plans changed as the director picked up Coolie, while Karthi also had a few films to complete. ## That said, a film uniting two titans of Indian cinema, Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan, under Lokesh's vision promises to be a once-in-a-lifetime cinematic event. Fans may be ready to sacrifice the wait for Kaithi 2 if it means witnessing this dream project. However, an official confirmation from the makers is still awaited. ## Stay tuned...

With Coolie, Director Lokesh Kanagaraj Joins the Elite 400-Crore League Alongside SS Rajamouli and Rajkumar Hirani

Chennai, August 19 - Director Lokesh Kanagaraj teamed with superstar Rajinikanth for the first time for a gangster action drama film Coolie, which had a record-breaking opening weekend ever, after the record opening day, for a Tamil title. The movie entered the 400 crores club at the worldwide box office on its 5th day, and led the director to an elite club. ## With Coolie, Lokesh Kanagaraj has officially entered the elite club of Indian filmmakers who have delivered three consecutive 400+ crore worldwide grossers, standing tall alongside legends like SS Rajamouli and Rajkumar Hirani. Arguably the most bankable director of Tamil cinema currently, Lokesh keeps winning at the box office. ## The filmmaker began this extraordinary streak with Vikram (2022), a Kamal Haasan starrer that revived the superstar's box office dominance and grossed over 400 crore worldwide. He followed it up with Leo (2023), featuring Thalapathy Vijay, which, despite polarised reviews, went on to collect over 600 crore worldwide, becoming one of the highest-grossing Tamil films of all time. Now with Coolie (2024), Lokesh has achieved the rare hat-trick, making him the only Tamil filmmaker to do so. ## This puts him in the same league as SS Rajamouli, who delivered path-breaking blockbusters like Baahubali: The Beginning, Baahubali: The Conclusion, and RRR, each setting new benchmarks not just in India but across the world, where his last two films went on to gross over 1000 crores worldwide. Similarly, Bollywood's titan Rajkumar Hirani struck gold with 3 Idiots, PK, Sanju, and Dunku, all surpassing the 400-crore milestone. ## For Lokesh, achieving the feat of delivering 3 consecutive 400 crores grossers in the relatively smaller Tamil market makes the accomplishment even more remarkable. His rise reflects the growing stature of Tamil cinema, even though it is yet to fully explore some of the key markets, including the Hindi belt. With his streak of consecutive blockbusters, he has proven that strong storytelling combined with star power and scale can deliver massive results. ## As he continues to shape the blockbuster Lokesh Cinematic Universe (LCU), along with standalone films with some of India's biggest stars, the young filmmaker is now firmly established as one of the most powerful voices in Indian cinema today. Lokesh's next films promise bigger results with LCU's Kaithi 2, Rolex, and Vikram 2, and a standalone film with Aamir Khan in the pipeline. ## Stay tuned...

Rajinikanth's Coolie vs Thalapathy Vijay's Leo: Opening Weekend Box Office Comparison

Chennai, August 18 - In the high-octane world of the box office, comparisons are inevitable, especially when two megastars go head-to-head. Coolie, superstar Rajinikanth's latest blockbuster, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, has officially the superstar's own hit 2 Point 0 to claimed the crown as the biggest opening weekend ever for a Tamil film.## Coolie amassed approximately 385 crore gross globally on its opening weekend, surpassing 2.0's previous record (estimated 375+ crore). However, a more suited comparison of Coolie could be with Thalapathy Vijay's Leo, as 2.0's data are compromised due to various reasons, one of them being the lack of a proper tracking system. ## Worldwide Opening Weekend Box Office Comparison of Coolie and LeoMovie Title1st Day WW GBOC2nd Day WW GBOC3rd Day WW GBOC4th Day WW GBOCTotal Weekend WW GBOCCoolie₹ 153.50 Cr₹ 91.50 Cr₹ 75.00 Cr₹ 65.00 Cr₹ 385.00 CrLeo₹ 142.70 Cr₹ 68.80 Cr₹ 75.50 Cr₹ 69.40 Cr₹ 356.40 Cr## In comparison with Leo, the Rajinikanth-starrer stands tall. Coolie now holds the record of the biggest opening day for the Tamil title with approximately 153 crores worldwide, beating the previous record of Leo, which minted around 143 crores. Both movies showed solid holds over the weekend, but Leo failed to beat Coolie with around 356.50 crores worldwide. ## At the domestic box office, Coolie has grossed approximately 230 crores, in comparison to 208.50 crores gross of Leo. The Rajinikanth-starrer also dominates the overseas opening weekend with around 154 crores, whereas Leo minted 148 crores. Leo is currently the second-largest Tamil grosser of all time, with approximately ₹ 606 crores worldwide. It needs to be seen how far Coolie can go. ##

Rajinikanth's Coolie vs Jailer: Opening Weekend Box Office Collections Comparison

Chennai, August 18 - When it comes to the box office, superstar Rajinikanth is no stranger to rewriting history. In 2023, Jailer roared into theatres, amassing record-breaking numbers and cementing itself as a global blockbuster. Two years later, the legend has returned with Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, which opened to unprecedented hype and is already making headlines for its thunderous worldwide opening weekend. ## The clash of these two milestones offers a fascinating look at how the superstar continues to dominate across generations. Coolie stars Rajinikanth as a former smuggler, backed by a stellar ensemble including Shruti Haasan, Nagarjuna, Upendra, Aamir Khan (cameo), and others. On day 1, Coolie exploded with approximately 153 crores worldwide, as the biggest Tamil opener of all time. ## Worldwide Opening Weekend Box Office Comparison of Coolie and LeoMovie Title1st Day WW GBOC2nd Day WW GBOC3rd Day WW GBOC4th Day WW GBOCTotal Weekend WW GBOCCoolie₹ 153.50 Cr₹ 91.50 Cr₹ 75.00 Cr₹ 65.00 Cr₹ 385.00 CrJailer₹ 96.60 Cr₹ 46.40 Cr₹ 79.10 Cr₹ 85.90 Cr₹ 308.00 Cr## Since the opening day, even though the trajectory remained on the downward side, the film retained steam, earning another 250 crores worldwide from Friday to Sunday. With record-setting advances, a historic day, and sustained collections through the extended holiday period, the film has ended its 4-day opening week on a spectacular high with approximately 385 crores worldwide. ## This roaring opening weekend naturally draws comparisons with Rajinikanth's earlier juggernaut, Jailer (2023). Released on August 10, 2023, the Nelson Dilipkumar's directorial had kick-started its journey with a powerful 96.60 Cr worldwide gross. Sikandar Director AR Murugadoss Responds To Why Tamil Cinema Is Not Able To Produce 1000 Crore Films

Chennai, August 18 - Tamil director AR Murugadoss, who last directed superstar Salman Khan's Sikandar, has been in the news for the past few weeks for various reasons. The director caught everyone's attention recently when he blamed the language barrier for the box office failure of Sikandar, even though he had delivered a couple of big blockbusters in Hindi. ## A few weeks after his statement regarding Sikandar's failure went viral, the Ghajini director gave another statement, which is making a lot of noise on social media. During the promotion of his upcoming film Madharaasi, starring Sivakarthikeyan, Murugadoss explained why Tamil films are not earning 1000 crores worldwide, while other top industries do. ## Speaking to Valaipechu Voice, the director observed that Tamil filmmakers approach cinema differently from their counterparts in other industries. "Filmmakers in other languages tend to concentrate on entertaining people only, whereas Tamil directors tend to view cinema from an educational standpoint," he said. ## He noted that "Tamil cinema typically carries messages of what viewers should or should not do, which impacts their commercial success," while stressing that "Tamil directors are not to be compared directly with filmmakers from other regions because their goals are different." ## Meanwhile, ARM's Madharaasi is scheduled to release on September 5. It stars Sivakarthikeyan, Vidyut Jammwal, Biju Menon, Vikranth, Shabeer Kallarakkal and Rukmini Vasanth in the lead roles, alongside Prem Kumar, Sanjay and Sachana Namidass. ## Stay tuned...

Box Office: Rajinikanth, Aamir Khan's Coolie Hindi Opening Weekend Collection

Mumbai, August 18 - Superstar Rajinikanth's gangster action drama Coolie, also featuring Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan in a cameo role, has had a decent opening weekend at the Hindi box office, where it has competed with YRF's War 2, and strong holdover Mahavatar Narsimha. ## Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, Coolie has been the best-promoted Kollywood title in North India in recent times, yet the results are not as expected. After opening with 4.50 crores net collection, the dubbed version showed consistency, but failed to take full advantage of the holiday period. ## Dubbed as Coolie: The Powerhouse, the film scored approximately 19.50-19.75 crores net collection over the 4-day extended weekend in Hindi. Currently, it is the 7th highest-grossing Tamil title of all time in the Hindi version. The presence of Aamir Khan was expected to boost Coolie's chances in Hindi, but that didn't happen, due to a clash as well as mixed audience reception.## Depending on how it performs in the coming days, a decent hold from hereon will make this the second biggest Tamil grosser in Hindi, behind 2.0, which scored around 188 crores net. Currently, Kabali is the second biggest grosser with approximately 28 crores net. ## Meanwhile, Coolie had a huge first weekend at the worldwide box office with around 385 crores gross in all versions. In India, the movie has minted approximately 230 crores, while overseas collection is an estimated 155 crores in 4 days. As said, the word of mouth is mixed, so it needs to be seen how the film performs during the weekdays. ## Here's a look at day-wise collections of Coolie in Hindi - ## Thursday - 4.50 crores net approx. ## Friday - 6.30 crores net approx. ## Saturday - 4.25 crores net approx. ## Sunday - 4.65 crores net approx. ## Stay tuned...

Rajinikanth's Coolie and Hrithik Roshan, Jr. NTR's War 2 Feature In The Top 10 Movies of The Weekend (August 15-17) Worldwide

Chennai, August 18 - It was nearly the Indian domination at the global box office this past weekend as superstar Rajinikanth's much-hyped gangster action drama Coolie has stormed to the second spot at the worldwide box office in its opening weekend. ## Over the extended Independence Day weekend (August 14–17), the Lokesh Kanagaraj's directorial grossed a staggering $44+ million (385+ Cr) worldwide, making it the second biggest grosser of the weekend across all films globally. In the process, Coolie missed out on the top spot to Hollywood actioner Weapons, which collected nearly $50 million worldwide over the same frame. ## It needs to be noted that it was the second weekend for Weapons, which grossed $43.4 million during 15-17 August. During the same frame, Coolie managed $26.55+ million (232+ crores) at the worldwide box office, and was the 4th biggest grosser behind Demon Slayer ($32.3 million) and Nobody ($32 million). ## Despite mixed word of mouth and largely poor critics' reviews, Coolie's performance underscores Rajinikanth's unmatched star power and marks another milestone for Tamil cinema on the international stage. Its four-day extended weekend tally also makes it the biggest-ever Tamil opener worldwide, surpassing even 2.0 and Leo. ## The Top Ten Films Worldwide for 15-17 August 2025 WeekendRankFilm TitleWeekend WW GBOC (In USD)Weekend WW GBOC (In INR)1.Weapons$43.40 million₹380.00 Cr2.Nobody$32.00 million₹280.00 Cr3.Demon Slayer$31.30 million₹274.00 Cr4.Coolie$25.55+ million₹232.00 Cr5.Freakier Friday$23.80 million₹208.00 Cr6.Dead To Rights$23.40 million₹205.00 Cr7.The Bad Guys 2$21.20 million₹186.00 Cr8.War 2$20.70 million₹181.00 Cr9.The Shadow's Edge$20.30 million₹178.00 Cr10.Fantastic Four: The First Steps$18.10 million₹158.50 Cr## Note: International movies' data according to Comscore ## The film opened strongly in both domestic and overseas markets, with India contributing the lion's share of collections, while North America, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia delivered robust numbers. Despite the robust weekend, the trade feels that Coolie somehow underperformed, considering the sky-high buzz and expectations. ## Meanwhile, Hrithik Roshan and Jr. NTR's spy action thriller War 2 was also among the top 10 movies of the weekend (August 15-17) at the worldwide box office with $20.70+ million. Released by Yash Raj Films itself, it took the 8th spot among the top weekend grossers. Overall, the film grossed approximately 265 crores worldwide in its 4-day weekend (August 14-17). ## As said, just like Coolie, War 2 also underperformed against huge expectations. However, in comparison, Coolie faired much better and, to some extent, it managed to overcome the negative reviews and mixed word of mouth, something War 2 failed to do, especially in the Telugu version. ## Stay tuned...

Chennai, August 18 - Superstar Rajinikanth reigns supreme at the box office at the age of 75. The Indian cinema legend led his gangster action drama Coolie to the number 1 among the biggest opening weekend grossers of Tamil cinema, beating Rajinikanth's own film, 2.0. ## Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, Coolie had a bumper 4-day opening weekend, with a gross collection of over 385 crores at the worldwide box office. Rajnikanth Mania Continues: Coolie Becomes Fastest Tamil Film To Hit 300 Crore Worldwide, Beating Thalapathy Vijay's Leo

Chennai, August 16 - The law of cinema says that a film's box office performance gets affected when critics don't like it. At least, this rule applies to most of the stars, but not to superstar Rajinikanth, who is among the very few to win over negative reviews and create box office records. ## The Indian cinema legend has once again proved his unmatched box office dominance as his latest release Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, stormed past the 300 crore mark worldwide in record time, despite facing negative reviews from critics and a section of audiences. ## The gangster action drama had a record opening, but trade feared that it might collapse as reviews were not favourable. Well, that didn't happen (at least till now), as Coolie has become the fastest Tamil film ever to reach 300 crore worldwide, surpassing Thalapathy Vijay's Leo, which previously held the record. ## While Leo achieved the milestone in 4 days, Coolie has managed to cross the same figure in just 3 days, rewriting Kollywood's box office record books. The latest blockbuster is heading towards 325+ crores worldwide in 3 days. Leo had grossed 287 crores worldwide in as many days. ## The film's extraordinary opening day gross of over 150 crore set the tone for its historic run. Strong collections in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, and Andhra/Telangana were further boosted by phenomenal overseas earnings, where Coolie registered the biggest Tamil overseas debut of all time. ## Even with polarising word of mouth, the film continues to pull massive crowds, reaffirming Rajinikanth's superstardom and director Lokesh Kanagaraj's mass appeal. Trade experts note that Coolie's performance highlights Rajinikanth's enduring popularity, even at the age of 75. ## With the Independence Day holiday weekend fueling its numbers, the movie is now racing towards the 500 crore club, with expectations of setting new lifetime benchmarks for Tamil cinema. The real test, however, will begin on Monday, and if Coolie can overcome that, it is not going to stop anytime soon. ## Stay tuned...

Top 10 Biggest Indian Openers At The Worldwide Box Office: Pawan Kalyan's They Call Him OG Takes 8th Spot

Chennai, September 27 - In the opening day box office battle, superstar Pawan Kalyan has officially entered the all-time top 10 list with his latest blockbuster They Call Him OG, directed by Sujeeth. Released on September 25, the gangster action drama stormed the global box office with one of the biggest openings for an Indian film, cementing Power Star's dominance even in the era of pan-India cinema. The race for the biggest Indian opener has grown fierce over the years. It all began with SS Rajamouli's Baahubali 2: The Conclusion (2017), which not only redefined Indian box office history but also became the first Indian film to cross 100 crore and 200 crore worldwide on day one. The director later broke his own record with RRR (2022), which took global openings to another level. In 2024, Indian cinema scaled unprecedented heights when Allu Arjun's Pushpa 2 – The Rule shook the industry with a 275 crore worldwide opening, almost touching the (still) unthinkable 300 crore mark. While OG didn't break into the top five, it still paved its path to history, delivering the biggest-ever opening for PK and ranking among the Top 10 Biggest Indian Openers of All Time. Coolie vs Leo Opening Day Box Office Comparison: Rajinikanth-starrer Beats Thalapathy Vijay's LCU Blockbuster To Emerge Biggest Tamil Opener Worldwide

Chennai, August 15 - In the race to emerge as the king of Tamil cinema, superstar Rajinikanth's gangster action drama Coolie has beaten Thalapathy Vijay's LCU blockbuster Leo, and become the biggest opener ever for a Tamil title, at the domestic and worldwide box office. Released on August 14, just ahead of the Independence Day holiday, Coolie began its run with record-breaking pre-sales of over 100 crore. Despite facing mixed reviews and a direct clash with Yash Raj Films' high-octane spy thriller War 2, Lokesh Kanagaraj's directorial drew huge spot bookings, turning the film's opening into a box office triumph. While final numbers are still coming, estimates indicate that Coolie has grossed over 150 crore worldwide on its first day, overtaking Leo's 143 crore debut. This achievement makes it the biggest Tamil opener of all time, and only the third Tamil film in history to open with more than 100 crore globally. On the domestic front, Coolie raked in around 78 crore gross, setting a new benchmark for Tamil films and surpassing the previous record held by Rajinikanth's 2.0 and Vijay's Leo, which grossed around 76.50 crores. International markets also responded with blockbuster enthusiasm, contributing an estimated 75 crore gross, a new overseas record, beating Leo's 66 crore. Both Coolie and Leo, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, have been the most hyped Tamil films in recent times. Even the opening day advances for both titles were almost in the same range, but experts attribute Coolie's record opening to the perfect combination of Rajinikanth's mass appeal, Lokesh Kanagaraj's brand value post-Vikram and Leo, and the holiday weekend. With these opening day numbers, Coolie has set the tone for a potentially record-breaking lifetime run for Tamil cinema. If the film manages to win over mixed word of mouth, through the holiday period and maintains decent weekday holds, it could challenge 2.0's lifetime worldwide gross of around 700 crores.
