Mumbai, June 13 - There were several new releases this Friday in India, and among them, the horror genre continues to emerge as one of the most reliable performers at the Indian box office. While several star-driven films hit cinemas on Friday, it was Vikram Bhatt's Haunted 3D: Echoes of the Past that attracted the strongest audience response among the new releases, further highlighting the growing popularity of horror films in the country.

According to estimates, Haunted 3D opened with an India net collection of approximately 2.50 crore (3 crore gross) on its first day. The film outperformed fellow Friday releases, including Bharat Bhhagya Viddhaata, Main Vaapas Aaunga and Governor, despite carrying a much smaller scale and lower pre-release buzz. The majority of its collections came from Hindi-speaking markets, where the film recorded encouraging occupancy throughout the day.

New Hollywood horror thriller Backrooms has also generated interest among urban Indian audiences, particularly in premium multiplexes. On its opening day, the film grossed approximately 1.50 crores, including premiere shows. It was the least expected to perform, but it surprised the trade with its better-than-expected start, very much like Haunted 3D.

Meanwhile, holdover horror-thriller Obsession continued its impressive run at the Indian box office. On its third Friday, the film scored an excellent around 4 crore gross, which is in par with its second Friday collection. This has pushed the total Indian gross collection of the movie to 63.25 crores in 15 days. The movie is heading towards the 100 crore mark, which is a remarkable achievement for an original international title.
