New Delhi, Dec 25 (IANS) With '83' finally releasing worldwide on Friday, there has been a renewed interest among cricket fans in India's first-ever Cricket World Cup triumph. One of the biggest points from that triumphant campaign was India winning the trophy after beating two-time and defending champions West Indies at Lord's. ## After losing the toss in the title decider, India were asked to bat first against a West Indies team that had unarguably the world's most ferocious bowling attack. India were skittled out for 183 in 54.4 overs. ## But the Indian bowlers rallied around in unison to dismiss the Windies for 140 all out in 52 overs, completing a 40-run victory. The Indian team, led by Kapil Dev, had stunned the cricketing world in completing one of the biggest upsets by defeating the invincible West Indies. ## Former West Indies pacer Michael Holding, in the chat show 'Pit Stop' on Sony Ten, admitted that his side had underestimated the resolve of the Indian team in the 1983 World Cup final at the Lord's Cricket Ground. ## "I am going to be totally honest," he said in the interview recorded in 2020. "We were perhaps overconfident. We did not think that India was going to be our problem in the World Cup. Yes, they might have beaten us a couple of times before the World Cup, but we always thought we would be able to overpower them, especially with our fast bowling that we had." ## Holding pointed out that when his team were complacent, India simply lifted their game for the big occasion. "Especially, in that final, we just took it for granted, having bowled them out that cheaply," said the Jamaican who was nicknamed 'Whispering Death' in his heyday. "The runs would have been knocked off quite easily. That is what happens when you take things for granted, when you underrate people and they lift their game." ## Holding added: "They were the underdogs, they had nothing to lose. Kapil Dev and that team just went out there and performed at their very best and took us by surprise because we were overconfident and took it for granted." ## Holding, who became a commentator after retiring from competitive cricket, also pointed out that the 1983 success had a ripple effect on India winning the 1985 Benson and Hedges Cup in Australia. ## "That was a good Indian team. As we have seen as time went on, right after that World Cup, they went to Australia and won in 1985. New Delhi, Dec 24 (IANS) Ahead of the worldwide release of the Ranveer Singh-starrer cricket drama '83' on Friday, December 24. Vikram Man Singh, son of former cricket administrator and manager of the 1983 World Cup-winning team, P.R. Man Singh, showered praise on the movie after watching it at a special screening in Mumbai. ## Vikram Man Singh also shared an interesting story of how his father, played by Pankaj Tripathi in the film, broke the strict BCCI rules for sake of the players. Man Singh played a pivotal role in the side's World Cup victory. He was the only member of the support staff who accompanied the team to England.## Speaking to IANS, Vikram, who was also a former cricket administrator in Hyderabad, said: "I watched the movie with moist eyes. I have no words to express the feeling." He added that Pankaj Tripathi did justice to his father's character. ## Vikram also praised director Kabir Khan for providing "equal space and importance" to each character in the movie. "I would really like to thank him for making this beautiful movie. Not a single character you will find ignored or unimportant," he said. ## "My father also felt very proud, he relived the moment and the way Pankaj Tripathi portrayed his role was phenomenal," Vikram continued. "The role of manager is very important in any team. He takes care of things to make it easy for sportspersons to just concentrate on the game rather than worry about day-to-day matters." ## Talking about his father, Vikram told IANS: "When he was the manager of that historic team in England, my father made sure the players didn't get affected by any off-field issues. Nowadays, you will find a large support staff goes with the team for any major event, but my father at that time was handling everything all alone. He was the only one who went with the team with limited resources." ## And Man Singh also broke a few rules, issued by the BCCI at that time, to provide relief to players. ## "WAGS (Wives and Girlfriends) were not allowed to travel with the team at that time," Vikram recalled. "And the BCCI's rules were really strict. The players were agitated about this, as other countries were allowing it. Just before the 1983 World Cup, Krishnamachari Srikkanth got married and his wife was there in England, but she was staying in her friend's house. ## "So, Srikkanth informed my father that he would go and meet his wife and then come back for training. The BCCI was against all this, but my father told 'Chika' to let her come to the team hotel and stay with him. He even told Chika to tell his roommate Roger Binny to move to my father's room." ## Vikram continued: "So many other such things, such as distributing daily allowances and making sure that every single player of the team is happy and focused on just his game was the duty of my father. And he did it brilliantly. Till date, Kapil Devji calls up my father and speaks to him about his health and everything and he keeps praising my father in public. I mean the entire team actually loves my father and respects him for his management and honesty." ## At the end of the conversation, Vikram re-emphasised his endorsement for the film: "I would want everyone to go and watch this movie. Mumbai, October 16 - Former India cricketer and one of the greats of the game, Rahul Dravid is all set to become India's next head coach after the upcoming T20 World Cup in UAE and Oman. According to TOI, Dravid agreed to coach the Indian men's senior team on Friday during the IPL final where BCCI president Sourav Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah held a meeting with him. ## During the meeting with Dravid - Ganguly and Shah persuaded him to take Ravi Shastri's position after the world cup and he reportedly agreed. "Dravid has confirmed he will be the next head coach of the Indian team. He will be stepping down as the head of the NCA soon", a top BCCI official told TOI on Friday night after the IPL final. ## TOI also reported that Dravid's trusted lieutenant Paras Mhambrey has been appointed as the bowling coach while no decision has been made on the replacement for fielding coach R Sridhar. Vikram Rathore is likely to remain as the batting coach.## Meanwhile, the current head coach Ravi Shastri will be stepping down from the post after the mega event. Mumbai, October 13 - The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) surprised one and all when it announced that former India world cup winning captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni will be part of the Indian Cricket Team during the ICC T20I World Cup in UAE and Oman as a mentor. ## Dhoni's inclusion as a mentor made the cricket fraternity and fans happy as he has been one of the most loved sportspersons around the world. And now, Dhoni has given another reason to the sports fraternity to be proud of him as he will not be charging any fees for his service to the Indian team. ## Speaking to news agency ANI, BCCI secretary Jay Shah said the legend wouldn't be charging anything for his new role. "MS Dhoni is not charging any honorarium for his services as the mentor of the Indian team for the T20 World Cup", he said.## The 40-year-old Dhoni retired from international cricket last year, his last India game being the 2019 World Cup semi-final, which the team lost to New Zealand. It is believed that Dhoni was brought in for his experience in devising near-perfect white ball strategies. ## However, after retiring from international cricket, MS Dhoni continuing to play for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL. Under his leadership, CSK will be playing its 9th IPL final on October 15. I'll continue to be an RCB player till I play my last IPL game. The big news is that ace spinner R Ashwin has returned to the 15-member squad while the wrist-spin duo of Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav have been left out for the multi-team event to be held in UAE. ## Ashwin last played a T20I in July 2017 against the West Indies. He captained the Punjab team in the IPL in the 2018 and 2019 seasons and Delhi Capitals in 2020. Mumbai, August 17, 2021: The International Cricket Council (ICC), on Tuesday (August 17), has announced the fixtures of the Men's T20 World Cup 2021. The marquee tournament, scheduled to be played in the UAE and Oman, will get underway from 17 October, with the Final to be played in Dubai on 14 November. ## The blockbuster face-off between India and Pakistan of the Super 12 stage, will take place on October 24 in Dubai at 6 pm local time. The tournament will begin with the Round 1 Group B encounter between hosts Oman and Papua New Guinea at 2 pm local time on 17 October, with Scotland and Bangladesh, the other teams in Group B, clashing in the evening match at 6 pm. ## Ireland, Netherlands, Sri Lanka, and Namibia - making up Group A - will be in action in Abu Dhabi the next day, with Round 1 matches running till 22 October. Mumbai, August 10, 2021: Cricket has been waiting to be included in Olympics for more than a century now. And now, the wait could see an end in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics as the International Cricket Council (ICC), on Tuesday (August 10), confirmed that it will bid for cricket's inclusion in the games. ## The international cricket body has been making a case for cricket's inclusion in Olympics for a while now and it will also have backing from the richest cricket board BCCI as made clear by Secretary Jay Shah recently. The last time cricket was a part of the Olympics was in 1900, when Great Britain played France. And now, the world's one of the most followed sport, cricket could become a permanent fixture in the games with the ICC hoping to see it included in Brisbane 2032 as well and beyond. ## Earlier, the BCCI was not too keen on cricket's including in the Olympic games as it feared the loss of its autonomy and interference from the Indian Olympic Association (IOC). However, things changed after Jay Shah took charge of the Board. He was recently quoted as the BCCI being on the same page with the ICC on the matter. ## ICC chairman Greg Barclay said, "Firstly on behalf of everyone at the ICC, I would like to congratulate the IOC, Tokyo 2020, and the people of Japan for staging such an incredible Games in such difficult circumstances. It truly was fantastic to watch and captured the imagination of the world and we would love for cricket to be a part of future Games". ## "Our sport is united behind this bid. And we see the Olympics as a part of cricket's long-term future. We have more than a billion fans globally and almost 90 percent of them want to see cricket at the Olympics. Clearly, cricket has a strong and passionate fanbase, particularly in South Asia where 92% of our fans come from, whilst there are also 30 million cricket fans in the USA.
