Drishyam 2 Is The 5th Blockbuster Of Ajay Devgn - Below Are The List Of Stars With The Most Number Of Blockbusters

Mumbai, December 6 - Ajay Devgn starrer Drishyam 2 has emerged a blockbuster at the box office thanks to the outstanding trending of the film. The film is set to cross the 200cr mark at the box office and it is expected to put 225cr or more total in its final lifetime run. Drishyam 2 has emerged as the 5th blockbuster of Ajay Devgn's career though footfalls wise it will be his lowest. "Phool Aur Kaante" was the first blockbuster of Ajay Devgn's career which was his debut film in 1991. Later on, "Golmaal 3" (2010), "Golmaal Again" (2017), and "Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior" (2020) emerged as his other blockbusters. ## If we talk about 90s generation superstars then Salman Khan leads the most number of blockbuster count and that too by around 50% margin. In total, Salman Khan has delivered 15 Blockbusters at the box office and 9 of them came in the last decade only. Shah Rukh Khan with 10 Blockbusters occupies the second position on the list. Both Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan are the only stars who have crossed a double-digit number of blockbusters from 90s generation stars. Aamir Khan has delivered 9 Blockbusters at the box office while Akshay Kumar delivered 2 Blockbusters till now. ## If we go back further and include the stars from the golden period of the Hindi film industry then most of the 90s stars won't find a place in the list of most blockbusters. The most celebrated screen icon Amitabh Bachchan had around 15 blockbusters to his credit while the he-man of Bollywood Dharmendra had 11 Blockbusters. The legendary Dilip Kumar who ruled the silver screens from the late 1940s to the early 1960s had delivered close to 13 Blockbusters at the box office.## Then there were some phenomenal stars as well who ruled the industry and was number one star for a brief period like Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand, Rajendra Kumar, Jeetendra, and Sunny Deol who also delivered numerous blockbusters at the box office but cut it short Amitabh Bachchan, Salman Khan, and Dilip Kumar are the three stars who are well above everyone in terms of blockbuster count.## Stay tuned...

Mumbai, April 30 (IANS) Veteran actors Jeetendra and Rishi Kapoor worked together in films such as " Ghar ki Izzat", " Badalte Rishtey" and "Khazana". Rishi very cultured, well-behaved since childhood: veteran film-maker Krishnamurthi

Mumbai, April 30 (IANS) Few may have vivid, early memories of Bollywood actor Rishi Kapoor - who passed away today - as the prominent Krishnamurthi family in the Indian film industry.## The pater-familias, A. Krishnamurthi, 91, remembers how decades ago, the young Rishi -- fondly known as 'Chintu' -- would visit his father's or uncles' film sets and even played with him joyfully there.## "He was always a very well-behaved, cultured child... Even his future wife and the little child actor Neetu Singh used to play in my lap. Years later, when they got married our family relations became even stronger," A. Krishnamurthi told IANS.## The incidents he referred to were around the film "Nazrana" (1961) in which he was the production executive and interacted closely with the film's cast of big names like Raj Kapoor, Vyjanthimala, Usha Kiran, Gemini Ganesan (father of the diva, Rekha Ganesan), when the 9-year old Rishi would often drop in on the sets.## Neetu was a bubbly, lovable 5-year old child actress in Venus Pictures' superhit musical film, "Suraj" (1966) with Rajendra Kumar, Vyjanthimala, Mumtaz, Ajit, and Johnny Walker.## "Neetu started working as a child artiste with Suraj's Years later, she and Rishi married and the entire industry was genuinely happy with their Jodi'. Our long family relations with the 'Kapoor khandan' since the mid-1940s were further cemented," reminisced A. Krishnamurthi.## At 18, when Rishi Kapoor was to make his Bollywood grand debut with "Bobby", Raj Kapoor was hunting for a suitable playback voice' for his son, though there were singing stalwarts like Mohammed Rafi, Kishore Kumar and Mukesh.## "Luckily, through some friends, I came to know of a young but very talented boy, Shailendra Singh and recommended him to Laxmikant-Pyarelal. After he was approved by the music-director duo and the Kapoors, Rishi called up to express his gratitude for giving him a voice' and the film industry a new singer," A. Krishnamurthi said.## As Shailendra Singh sang many songs for Rishi Kapoor, the latter apparently repaid the debt to A. Krishnamurthi by readily agreeing to break his rule and work in a key role for his son K. Ravi Shankar's maiden directorial venture, "Sindoor" (1987), under the family's banner, Tina Film International (TFI).## "I was virtually scared of even approaching Rishia Very hesitantly, I mentioned to my father that I needed him for that key role in the film which had his uncle Shashi Kapoor and Jeetendra, besides Jaya Prada, Govinda, and Neelam Kothari. When my father reluctantly broached the topic with Rishi, he promptly agreed, but on one condition - he would not charge any fees! Such was his magnanimity and down-to-earth character, and he gave a memorable performance," K. Ravi Shankar told IANS.## Later, he broke another rule for the director whom he admired a lot. "He enacted the lead in my second film 'Gharana' (1989) and one day graciously came for an early 6 am shoot - coinciding with the sunrise - probably the second time in his career, at Hyderabad,a recalls K. Ravi Shankar of that morning.## K. Ravi Shankar said coming from a big family of film-makers, Rishi Kapoor was always aware of producers' problems and pressures working on limited budgets, he never threw tantrums or indulged in 'star nakhras', avoided any exorbitant demands, remained punctual and professional.## "Once, during the Gharana' 3-week long schedule in Hyderabad, he called a production assistant and asked him to book a suite, arrange air tickets and pick his family from the airport to the five-star hotel. The worried production assistant informed me and I gave him the go-ahead That evening, Rishi came looking for me and I assured him that I had cleared it. But he said only on the condition that 'he would pay entirely for his family trip' without any arguments That were his greatness," said K. Ravi Shankar.## In 1990, he made it a point to especially flying down to Chennai for K. Ravi Shankar's wedding with Jayashree and posed for family pictures along with A. Krishnamurthi and his wife Mathuram.## TFI Executive Producer Ramya Iyer recalled how from childhood the Krishnamurthi's and Kapoors would bond at various festivals or family occasions.## "During the annual Ganeshotsav, celebrated with great enthusiasm by the Kapoors, Rishi would personally call up and invite my dad (A. Krishnamurthi), and when we went he was there to receive us at the gate without fail, and escort us inside. He was a highly cultured and humble person, respected elders, and on sets would interact with everyone right down to the spot-boys," Ramya Iyer told IANS.## TFI's producer K. Ramji, who runs his own company Tina Films Enterprises (TFE), recalled how he was once surprised to see the glittering singer-dancer costume from the mega-hit Subhash Ghai film, "Karz" (1980), starring Rishi Kapoor, Tina Munim-Ambani, Simi Garewal, and others, at Rishi Kapoor's home.## "He mentioned that he had liked it so much after the 'Om Shanti Om' number that he decided to preserve ita Four decades after the film release, the costume hangs to this day at his home-office, though he is gone now," said K. Ramji softly.## Stay tuned...

Stardom Struggles (Column: B-Town) Bollywood

Stardom Struggles (Column: B-Town)

The struggle was not a very inspiring word for those who landed in Mumbai in thousands, year after year to try their luck in films. If you asked an aspirant what he was doing, the answer would be "trying in films". Nobody said, "I am a struggler".## Here are some struggle stories of a few stars who were contemporaries in the same era.## The struggle became a glorious word for the ones who attained stardom. One loved to thrive on talking about "those days". While some took pride in talking about it to the point of romanticizing it, others thought it amounted to indulging in self-pity and never opened up. From Amitabh Bachchan to Dharmendra and Jeetendra to Sanjeev Kumar, every actor had struggled. Passed through various phases of making the rounds of film production offices to not reaching beyond the office boy. At best, they were asked to leave their pictures so the producer Sahab could see them as and when. Some ended up being exploited by petty staff (depicted aptly in director Hrishiksh Mukerjee's film "Guddi" -- check the Asrani-versus-Keshto Mukherjee scenes).## The ones who were emotional about their struggling days included Dharmendra and Sanjeev Kumar. If they could make it big, it was because of their determination and presence of mind. When a producer decided to give a break to a new actor, he made an exclusive contract with him/her for a certain number of films, to be made exclusively for his company. Dharmendra is said to have made the same exclusivity agreement with as many as three producers!## Sanjeev Kumar started with Gujarati plays and what was called B-grade costume dramas, which involved sword fights, in those days. But, his talent came out in two films, "Pati Patni Aur Woh" and "Sunghursh". In "Sunghursh", he had a brief role but he stood his ground against no less a star than Dilip Kumar. Yet, big time was far away, when he realized that the South-based veteran producer LV Prasad was looking to cast for his film "Khilona" where the actor needed to play a mentally-disturbed person.## Sanjeev grabbed the opportunity and arranged to show his Gujarati film, "Mare Javun Pele Paar", in which he had played a similar role, to Prasad. The film launched him as the best performing actor of his time.## Rajesh Khanna and Jeetendra can be said to be lucky in their struggle. Not that things fell into their lap, they did the regular trying-for-work routine but were lucky because both at least had a home to go back to at the end of the day, since both hailed from Mumbai.## In the case of Khanna, he won the United Producers-Filmfare talent search contest and got signed up for a few films. But the films failed one after the other. An actor's struggle continues till he gets his first hit. Khanna got a hint of success with his sixth film, "Bandhan", followed by his first superhit, "Aradhana". The success of "Aradhana" coincided with the end of his contract binding him to United Producers and he was free to do films of his choice with other makers.## After the success of "Aradhana", Khanna's career was on a rollercoaster trail. One hit followed another. His hits meant silver or golden jubilee. The line-up went like this: "Aradhana" (1969), "Ittefaq", "Do Raaste", "The Train", "Sachaa Jhutha", "Aan Milo Sajana", "Safar", "Khamoshi", "Kati Patang", "Anand Andaaz", "Haathi Mere Saathi", "Dushman", "Maryada", "Amar Prem", "Bawarchi", "Apna Desh", "Daag", "Namak Haraam", "Aap Ki Kasam", "Prem Nagar", "Aavishkar" and "Roti" (1974). He had about 22 hits back to back in five years with only a few hiccups. After this, the hits became intermittent.## In "Namak Haraam", Rajesh Khanna starred with Amitabh Bachchan. Though the film was a hit, it was an indicator that Bachchan was set to take over the mantle from Khanna.## Jeetendra had a kind of indirect connection with the film industry in that his family dealt in imitation jewelry, and Jeetendra would visit producers to show them the jewellery, which they used in films. On one such visit to veteran producer V. Shantaram's studio, he got an assignment in the film "Navrang" and, later, a break as heroin same maker's "Geet Gaya Pattharonne", but no success yet. From "Navrang" in 1959 to, finally, "Farz" (1967), which became a blockbuster, if that was not struggling, nothing is.## Jeetendra was a huge star but stardom often loses out to changing trends. His Jumping Jack romance era came to an abrupt halt when the Rajesh Khanna-type romantic era took over. Jeetendra's struggle began again as there were no films forthcoming. According to his own confession, the only time he put on makeup in over 18 months was when Manmohan Desai offered him a cameo in the Rajesh Khanna-starrer "Roti" (1974). Finally, he approached veteran South filmmaker, LV Prasad, for work. Prasad cast him in "Udhar Ka Sindoor" (1976). "Farz", a South film launched Jeetendra into stardom, while another film from South, "Udhar Ka Sindoor", gave him a new lease of life. It was makers from South who helped him retain his stardom over the years.## Jeetendra was back to his dancing hero form along with typical South Indian family social themes that were almost always remakes of hits in South languages. So much so that he had to stay in South for days on end and even invested in a posh bungalow in Hyderabad to reduce his commuting.## A line up of jubilee hits from the South followed in this phase with films like "Jyoti Bane Jwala", "Takkar", "Judaai", "Ek Hi Bhool", "Meri Aawaz Suno", "Himmatwala", "Justice Chaudhury", "Mawaali", "Sanjog", "Maqsad".## As the change in trend brought to the fore Rajesh Khanna, come mid-1970s romance was not so much in the air as was disenchantment and simmering anger. Another struggling actor, Amitabh Bachchan, and a film he was assigned, "Zanjeer", clicked. Bachchan had references from Delhi but that could only guarantee him a decent reception from filmmakers, not work.## Bachchan's attempt to join All India Radio failed as his voice was found unsuitable for radio! What an irony, because his first connect with films was as a narrator in the much-acclaimed "Bhuvan Shome". Soon the baritone was also used in the film "Bawarchi" and hundreds of films and other programs since. It was about 15 films, except for an odd "Anand" and "Namak Haraam", that a line-up of failures continued.## Finally, a role came to him that was rejected by many top heroes with "Zanjeer".## There was no looking back for Bachchan, till the point of diminishing returns started with his kind of films. The superhit record was soon turning into mediocre fare and films just passing muster by the late 1970s.## Films like "The Great Gambler", "Jurmana", "Kaala Paththar", "Manzil", "Immaan Dharam" did not meet with the expectations of Bachchan fans who lined up at 6 am on the day of a new release. Just when his status was being relegated to being just another star, came to the "Coolie" on-set accident, which broke the star-fan barrier and made Bachchan a legend.## But, his struggle was to start again. Achieving stardom is tough enough but maintaining it is even tougher. More flops than mediocre films followed, with "Gangaa Jamunaa Saraswathi", "Toofan", "Jaadugar", "Main Azaad Hoon", "Agneepath", "Ajooba", "Indrajeet", "Akayla" -- and the list went on. The Bachchan draw was over.## The misjudged decision to launch a company and encashing his brand equity backfired on Amitabh Bachchan. He was made to believe that he had a brand value that would be worth capitalizing on. A corporate entity, ABCL, was created that landed Bachchan at the doorsteps of bankruptcy.## Facing a phase of no films in the offing, Bachchan sought work from Yash Raj Films, which brought back him into the reckoning. A lot of mediocre films followed but then came "Kaun Banega Crorepati" along with a horde of brand endorsing assignments -- all making Amitabh Bachchan into a living legend.## There are many stories of struggles that inspired many more to land in Mumbai to try their luck in the tinsel town. But, there have been many who could not make and had no stories to tell.## There are many more struggle stories. How about the new generation of aspirants, do they have to go through the same struggle? It would be interesting to take a look.## Stay tuned...

Jeetendra, Bollywood's 'Jumping Jack', turns 78

Mumbai, April 7 (IANS) How is Ravi Kapoor now? Have we forgotten him? If you are unable to fathom what we are talking about, Ravi Kapoor is the original name of one of Bollywood's biggest superstars of all time and the ladies' heartthrob of his era -- Jeetendra!## The man who earned the sobriquet of 'Jumping Jack' in Bollywood owing to his energetic dancing style, turns 78 today. He has chosen to move away from the limelight, but Jeetu -- as he was known to fans and colleagues -- continues to reside in the hearts of Hindi film buffs across the globe. His genial screen image, gentlemanly attitude off the screen and, most notably, those trademark white dancing shoes he insisted on wearing every time, will never go away from the popular psyche.## On his birthday, IANS does a throwback on the phenomenon that is Jeetendra.## WHERE IT STARTED## Jeetendra was born on April 7, 1942 in Punjab's Amritsar as Ravi Kapoor. He schooled at St. Sebastian's Goan High School and then went to Siddharth College, both in Mumbai.## BOLLYWOOD CALLING## Jeetendra got his Bollywood break in V. Shantaram's "Navrang". He would go on to deliver hit films like "Geet Gaya Pattharon Ne (1964), "Farz" (1967), "Caravan" (1971), "Parichay" (1972), "Khushboo" (1975), "Kinara" (1977), "Dharam Veer", "Judaai" (1980), "Meri Aawaz Suno" (1981), "Himmatwala" (1983), "Khudgarz" (1987) and a lot more, which made him a superstar.## HIT MACHINE## Jeetendra has acted in over 200 movies as the lead, out of which over 120 were hits! This is a ratio very few actors can dream of. His active years were from the '60s to the '90s but he actually ruled Bollywood in the '70s and '80s. In the seventies, he made a hit pair with top actresses of the era such as Hema Malini, Rekha, and Reena Roy. In the eighties, he started off as a hit co-star for Jaya Pradha but he really struck gold once he teamed up with Sridevi in the 1983 superhit, "Himmatwala". The film that would go on to spiral Sridevi to the top of the Bollywood heroines' heap, also led to a chain of commercial successes for the Jeetendra-Sridevi pair including "Justice Chaudhary", "Maqsad", "Mawaali" and "Tohfa".## JUMPING JACK## No discussion of Bollywood dancing can be complete without a thorough acknowledgment of Bollywood's Jumping Jack Jeetendra. Jeetendra's style was best defined in songs like "Naino mein mapna" ("Himmatwala"), "Taki O Taki" ("Himmatwala"), "Mast bahaaron ka main aashiq" ("Farz") and "Dhal gaya din" ("Humjoli"), which remain evergreen till today.## STYLE ICON## The evergreen heartthrob who made every girl's heart skip a beat has always been a natty dresser. On-screen, he set a fashion trend with his white pants and white shoes. It is said that the actor had randomly picked up the clothes from a shop before shooting for the song "Mast bahaaron ka main aashiq" in "Farz", which went on to become his trademark style. When quizzed about the same on the sets of a television dance reality show a few years ago, Jeetendra confessed with a smile: "Dark clothes make me look short!"## THE HEMA MALINI FACTOR## The man who GenNow Bollywood buffs know as Ekta and Tusshar Kapoor's father has been happily married to his teenage love Shobha Kapoor for decades now, but a Hema Malini biography by Ram Kamal Mukherjee titled "Hema Malini: Beyond The Dream Girl" mentions that the actress's mother Jaya Chakravarthy had allegedly convinced her to tie the knot with Jeetendra as she was not happy with her daughter dating Dharmendra, who was already a married man. Pressurizing Hema, her family arranged for a hush-hush wedding with Jeetendra at their Chennai residence. At that time, Jeetendra was dating Shobha Sippy, an air hostess. However, the news of the secret wedding got leaked in a daily. As soon as he read it, Dharmendra contacted Shobha and the two landed in Chennai. An inebriated Dharmendra reportedly broke into the wedding venue with Shobha. Despite the efforts of Hema's parents to carry on with the wedding, she backed out after meeting Dharmendra. Meanwhile, Shobha also spoke to Jeetendra seeking an explanation from him about the entire episode!## STEPPING OFF THE SPOTLIGHT## Why did the man with numerous hits move away from the spotlight? Jeetendra's son Tusshar revealed in an interview that the superstar of yore began losing interest when he started getting offers to play roles like the hero's elder brother or father in the '90s.## Although we don't see him on screen, Jeetendra has not severed ties with his extended Bollywood family. He still attends invitations from friends and colleagues, and also happily obliges fans seeking an autograph or a selfie!## Stay tuned...
