Universal Pictures Tops $3B At The Worldwide Box Office In 2022; First Studio To Reach Milestone Since 2019

Los Angeles, August 15 - The Hollywood box office is on the rise and Universal Pictures is leading it by producing blockbusters after blockbusters. In the major achievement, Universal Studio has crossed $3 billion at the worldwide box office in 2022, the first studio to reach the milestone since Disney in 2019.## According to Deadline, the studio has scored $1.74B at the international box office and $1.28B domestically (North America) this year. This is the eighth time Universal has topped the $3B box office mark worldwide. Jurassic World Dominion is leading the chart for the studio with $975 million ($605M overseas/$373.1M domestic) so far. It has set its eyes on touching the $1 billion mark in the coming days. ## "Jurassic World Dominion" is the 5th highest-grossing film (without exchange rates) for Universal at the domestic box office while worldwide, it ranks 8th for the studio. In 2022, the Chris Pratt-starrer is the second biggest-grossing Hollywood movie worldwide, after Paramount Pictures' "Top Gun Maverick" ($1.4B).## The second biggest film this year for the studio is Minions: The Rise of Gru, which has so far grossed $790.4M globally, including $446.7M overseas and $343.7M from domestic. It is already the biggest animated film during the covid-19 pandemic era. Box Office: Jurassic World Dominion Sets Eyes On $1B Globally

Los Angeles, August 14 - Universal Pictures' Jurassic World Dominion has surpassed $600 million at the international box office, after scoring $4.8 million in its 10th weekend. The total overseas collection of the film now stands at $601.4 million from 88 markets, according to Hollywood trade expert Gitesh Pandya.## The Chris Pratt-starrer science fiction actioner has grossed $373.1 million at the domestic (North America) box office and has almost finished its run there. The worldwide cume total of the film has reached $975 million and now, the $1 billion global mark is looking possible.## Interestingly, "Jurassic World Dominion" is the lowest-rated film in the 6-film franchise. The Rotten Tomatoes critic' score is just 30% for the movie, and still, the film has managed to keep up the box office legacy of this blockbuster franchise. If the movie reaches the $1 billion mark, it will become the 4th Jurassic movie to do so. ## China is leading the international box office chart of the film with $157.6 million in its final run, followed by Mexico at number 2 with $42.9 million, the United Kingdom at 3 with $41.5 million, France and Australia at number 4 and 5 with $28.5 million and $24.8 million, respectively. At the Indian box office, the movie scored 92 crores ($11.6M) in its final run. ## Directed by Colin Trevorrow, the film is set four years after the events of Fallen Kingdom, with dinosaurs now living alongside humans around the world. It follows Owen Grady and Claire Dearing as they embark on a rescue mission, while Alan Grant and Ellie Sattler reunite with Ian Malcolm to expose a conspiracy by the genomics corporation Biosyn, a once rival of the defunct InGen.## The film stars an ensemble cast including Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, Sam Neill, DeWanda Wise, Mamoudou Athie, BD Wong, and Omar Sy. The movie is also making its presence felt in the dubbed Hindi version.## The movie starring Nikhil Siddharth, Anupama Parameswaran, and Anupam Kher has had just 54 shows on the first day in Hindi but most of them got filled after the super positive word of mouth. Because of the huge demand, more shows and screens got added for the second day. The movie has more than 180 shows in Hindi on Sunday (2nd day). ## "Karthikeya 2" is getting the same response as Allu Arjun's "Pushpa - The Rise" in the Hindi version as far as shows allotment is concerned. "Pushpa" too started on a slow note but after getting positive WOM, more shows were added to the movie which helped it to get excellent results at the box office. ## For "Karthikeya 2", there are already 600+ shows for tomorrow (August 15), and more and more shows are being added with each passing hour. London, August 14 - British author, JK Rowling, best known for the fantasy book series "Harry Potter", has received a death threat on Twitter after she condemned the attack on author Salman Rushdie at a literary event at the Chautauqua Institution in Western New York. ## Salman Rushdie, who faced death threats for years after writing "The Satanic Verses", was stabbed by a 24-year-old New Jersey resident identified as Hadi Matar (according to NDTV), the US national of Lebanese origin, on stage on Friday. ## JK Rowling condemned this attack and tweeted expressing horror at the attempt on 75-year-old Rushdie's life. "Horrifying news. Feeling very sick right now. Let him be ok", she had posted.## A user commented on this post, saying "Don't worry you are next." The actor reportedly has given his nod and will sign the dotted lines after the final narration. The producer of the film Vyjayanthi Movies has announced on social media that the film will be released soon in the 4K Print. ## "Indra", directed by B. Gopal, was the highest-grossing Telugu film of that time. It grossed over 40 crores worldwide and is considered a milestone film in Telugu cinema. The film stars Chiranjeevi, Sonali Bendre, and Aarthi Agarwal, while Sivaji, Mukesh Rishi, and Prakash Raj play supporting roles with music composed by Mani Sharma.## The action drama film was dubbed and released in Tamil as "Indhiran" and in Hindi as "Indra: The Tiger". Bollywood Filmmakers Speak Up On Over The Top Remuneration of Actors

Mumbai, August 14 - The largest Indian film industry, Bollywood is going through a crisis and things are getting worse with each passing film. The reasons why Bollywood films aren't getting successful at the box office are mixed. One of the main reasons Bollywood films are failing is over the top remuneration of actors which is leading to weakening the quality of film's content. ## There has been chatter about how the film's quality is being compromised to keep the budget in check amid the high fees of actors. It is a sad reality of the Hindi film industry that many actors, who debuted in the last 10-15 years, are asking for high remuneration while the lifetime collection of their films ends up below what they have been asking for. ## The high asking price of actors to star in the movie is definitely a major concern, but it is not the only thing Bollywood needs to correct. Filmmaker Mukesh Bhatt believes that while stars' fees is a concern, the entire economics on which the film industry is operating today is wrong amid the emergence of OTT platforms. ## Mahesh Bhatt said that production houses have paid "such ridiculous fees" to actors because the OTT platforms were offering ludicrous deals to them. However, it proved to be a short-term gain as OTT platforms have pulled back from offering big deals to the filmmakers which have left the industry in a big mess. ## "Nobody was concerned with making a movie, everybody was doing arithmetic and considering which star to cast so that the film can be sold to OTT and satellite and make big bucks. The best of people make the worst of mistakes. The time has come to correct the mistake. The stars don't deserve the kind of money they are charging, because their films don’t have that kind of opening", Mahesh Bhatt told ETimes. ## Producer Ratan Jain said that there was a time when films used to be produced by an independent producer so the stars' fees were not a major concern. However, ever since the corporates came in, they started throwing money like water, leading to a significant rise in the prices of actors which has done huge damage to the industry. ## Mukesh Bhatt agreed with Jain and said that "corporates destroyed the industry by pumping huge amounts of money without any understanding of filmmaking. And now they have all shut down, so a correction is bound to happen. When you do business with the wrong economics, then it cannot sustain. The independent producers became like white tigers. Because the independent producers and distributors didn't have that kind of deep pockets to invest that kind of money".## Akshay Kumar reflects on the idea and says, "A lot of people are bothered by the lack of big box office numbers and such people believe that things need to be changed. I have always believed that the monetary aspect of cinema should first be aimed at the film's writer because he/she is the most important person on the project. The biggest heroes of our industry are our writers. If a writer cracks a story or a screenplay, no film can go wrong. Next in line of importance comes the director, then the technicians, and finally actors".## Industry veterans observe that the content in Hindi cinema has undergone a drastic change and certain elements that attracted footfalls in the theatres have been ignored by filmmakers lately. Apart from fee correction, they believe Bollywood also needs content correction that will bring the audience back to the cinemas. Kochi, August 13 - Director Jeethu Joseph confirmed last year that Mohanlal-starrer crime thriller Drishyam 3 is in the works and now, the latest reports say that the movie will be announced soon. ## Jeethu Joseph, after the release of Drishyam 2 in February 2021, confirmed that he discussed the climax of Drishyam 3 with Mohanlal and producer Antony Perumbavoor and they liked it. The director, however, said that the movie will not go on floors anytime soon as a lot of work was yet to be done. ## Going by the latest reports, it seems that the movie will be made official in the coming days, however, there is no confirmation whether it will get on the ground this year or not. Mohanlal will return as Georgekutty along with the primary cast of the first two films. ## Drishyam 3 will be the final part of the blockbuster film series.
