Box Office: 'Moana 2' Sails Past $1 Billion Worldwide
To think how big this billion-dollar success is, Moana 2, the sequel to the 2016 blockbuster, was originally conceived as a streaming show before Disney changed plans for good. It is Disney's third 2024 release to join the billion-dollar club following Inside Out 2 ($1.69 billion) and Deadpool & Wolverine ($1.33 billion).
Moana 2 has grossed $445 million domestically (North America) and $567 million at the international box office, bringing its grand total to $1.01 billion globally. No other film, apart from Disney's other 2 movies, managed to breach the $1 billion mark in 2024 with the closest to being Universal's Despicable Me 4 ($969 million).
The second film in the Moana franchise is the 9th film after the COVID-19 pandemic and the 55th title of all time to enter the billion-dollar club. It has outgrossed 2022's Jurassic World: Dominion and 2008's The Dark Knight to become the 53rd biggest-grosser ever. Moana 2 is projected to finish its run under the top 50 films.
Set three years after the first film, Moana 2 follows the titular character reuniting with the demigod Maui and assembling a wayfinding crew to find the lost island of Motufetu, break its curse, and reconnect the people of the ocean.
