Box Office: 'PS-1' Becomes Biggest Tamil Opener Worldwide In 2022
Chennai, October 1 - The cinematic adaptation of Kalki Krishnamurthy's 1955 novel Ponniyin Selvan has brought up the charm to the box office.
"PS-1" has equally been strong at the overseas box office on the first day. The overseas collection of the film came way above the projection with approx. ₹ 40.80 crores gross. The total opening day worldwide gross collection of the film is ₹ 83.60 crores, which is the highest for a Tamil film in 2022. The previous highest was "Beast" with ₹ 82.40 crores.
Produced by Madras Talkies and Lyca Productions, "PS-1" is also the third biggest opener of all time in Tamil cinema. The top two positions are secured with Rajinikanth's "2.0" and "Kabali". The Mani Ratnam-directed movie exceeded expectations on the first day despite mixed reviews and advance booking for the remaining weekend is super solid.
The film stars an ensemble cast of Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Trisha, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sobhita Dhulipala, Prabhu, R. Sarathkumar, Vikram Prabhu, Jayaram, Prakash Raj, Rahman, and R. Parthiban. The music is composed by A. R. Rahman, with cinematography handled by Ravi Varman, editing done by A. Sreekar Prasad, and production design by Thota Tharani.
