Marvel's 'Black Panther 2' And DC's 'Black Adam' Will Not Release In China
The Beijing regulators continue to crack down on American movies, particularly Marvel/Disney. The market of Hollywood movies in China has reduced drastically over the last few years but still, the snubbing of top-tier superhero titles is costing the studios tens of millions of lost potential revenue.
While the official word on the ban on "Black Panther 2" is awaited, THR reports that the film's denial comes as little surprise given the recent track record of Marvel movies in the Middle Kingdom. The first "Black Panther", which was released in 2018, grossed $105 million in China.
China has been a big market for Marvel films, however, since the covid-19 pandemic, the scenario has changed for the studio to get permission to release the film there. Over the last year or so, China has banned Marvel titles - "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings" (2021) and "Eternals" (2021) along with "Spider-Man: No Way Home" (2021) and others.
Meanwhile, Dwayne Johnson's "Black Adam", which was released a couple of weeks ago and has already crossed $320 million worldwide, has also reportedly been banned in China. Johnson's films have done good business in the country such as "Skyscraper" ($98 million in China) and Hobbs & Shaw ($201 million).
