Varun Dhawan, and Anushka Sharma's Hit 'Sui Dhaaga: Made in India' To Release In China

Mumbai, March 8 - Varun Dhawan and Anushka Sharma's comedy-drama Sui Dhaaga: Made in India is all set to release in China. ## Directed by Sharat Katariya, the 2018's hit, and critically acclaimed Bollywood flick will be hitting Chinese theaters on March 31st. The movie was super successful upon its original release in September 2018, grossing over 120 crores at the worldwide box office. ## The movie follows an unemployed small-town man who defies all odds and naysayers and revives his family's garment business. The film's plot is inspired by Mahatma Gandhi's philosophy that Indians should be self-dependent to achieve their goals. Dhawan plays a tailor, while Sharma plays an embroiderer in the film who, as husband and wife, team to fulfill their dreams of becoming entrepreneurs. ## "Indian youth are dream-chasers and if we look at China, they are also the same. Historically, they have loved uplifting stories about human emotions and rooted for underdogs to win the day. I'm hopeful they will love the theme of how self-reliance can aid people to achieve their goals", said producer Maneesh Sharma, according to Variety. ## "Sui Dhaaga: Made In India" is produced by Maneesh Sharma and Aditya Chopra under the banner of Yash Raj Films. Avatar: The Way of Water Sets Release Date In China

Beijing, November 23 - James Cameron's mega movie Avatar: The Way of Water has been cleared to release in China, according to The Wall Street Journal. In what could be a blockbuster move from Disney, the movie will be hitting Chinese theaters on December 16, the same day it is slated to be released globally. ## China has been tough for Disney as the studio failed to get clearance to release its blockbuster movies in China from the censor board. The studio and Chinese movie theaters had been closely watching for a decision from Chinese censors on the movie, the sequel to Cameron's 2009 sci-fi epic. ## China carries a huge box office potential for blockbuster titles and this could hugely benefit Disney to generate big millions with "Avatar 2". The first "Avatar" movie grossed over $260 million in China and was the second-biggest market after North America.## As said earlier, the last seven superhero films produced by Marvel Studios, Disney's most-profitable film studio over the past decade, haven't received release dates in the crucial China market, denting the global box-office gross.## Meanwhile, James Cameron has already set huge standards for "Avatar 2" at the box office. The budget of the film is not known yet, but according to Cameron, "Avatar 2" will need to become the fourth or fifth highest-grossing movie of all time or at least $2 billion to clear the break-even target. The future of Avatar movie also depends on how the sequel performs.## Stay tuned...

Marvel's 'Black Panther 2' And DC's 'Black Adam' Will Not Release In China

Los Angeles, November 11 - Marvel Studios' latest blockbuster Black Panther: Wakanda Forever along with Warner Bros. DC superhero flick Black Adam are unlikely to release in China, the biggest movie market in the world, according to The Hollywood Reporter.## The Beijing regulators continue to crack down on American movies, particularly Marvel/Disney. The market of Hollywood movies in China has reduced drastically over the last few years but still, the snubbing of top-tier superhero titles is costing the studios tens of millions of lost potential revenue. ## While the official word on the ban on "Black Panther 2" is awaited, THR reports that the film's denial comes as little surprise given the recent track record of Marvel movies in the Middle Kingdom. The first "Black Panther", which was released in 2018, grossed $105 million in China.## China has been a big market for Marvel films, however, since the covid-19 pandemic, the scenario has changed for the studio to get permission to release the film there. Over the last year or so, China has banned Marvel titles - "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings" (2021) and "Eternals" (2021) along with "Spider-Man: No Way Home" (2021) and others.## Meanwhile, Dwayne Johnson's "Black Adam", which was released a couple of weeks ago and has already crossed $320 million worldwide, has also reportedly been banned in China. Johnson's films have done good business in the country such as "Skyscraper" ($98 million in China) and Hobbs & Shaw ($201 million). ## Stay tuned...

'Jurassic World Dominion' Becomes 3rd Hollywood Movie During The Pandemic To Top $100M At The China Box Office

Mumbai, June 25 - Universal Pictures' Jurassic World Dominion has crossed the $100 million mark at the China box office, becoming only the 3rd Hollywood movie during the entire covid-19 pandemic to achieve the feat. ## While most Hollywood movies have failed to get permission to release in China, the final film in the Jurassic World trilogy is ruling the country's box office and has grossed over $105 million through Friday (15 days). Leading local ticketing app Maoyan currently projects Dominion to finish its China run with $124 million, which will be the biggest for a Hollywood title since the start of the pandemic. ## Directed by Colin Trevorrow, "Jurassic World Dominion" was slammed by the critics, calling it the worst Jurassic World movie out of 6 films in the franchise. However, the movie has been received very well by the audience, giving a solid A- CinemaScore.## Set four years after the events of Fallen Kingdom, "Jurassic World 3" has so far grossed over $276 million at the domestic (North America) box office and approx. $374 million internationally for a total worldwide cume of $650 million. It might has topped $700 million by now as the official overseas collection of the 3rd week is yet to come. ## The film stars an ensemble cast including Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, Sam Neill, DeWanda Wise, Mamoudou Athie, BD Wong, and Omar Sy. Dern, Goldblum, and Neill reprise their roles from the Jurassic Park trilogy, appearing together for the first time since the 1993 film Jurassic Park.## Stay tuned...

'Spider-Man: No Way Home' To Be Allowed To Release In China On One Condition

Mumbai, May 2 - Marvel/Sony's "Spider-Man: No Way Home" was released in December 2021 and went on to become one of the biggest grosser of all time with a worldwide collection of $1.89 billion. The Tom Holland-fronted movie has been released in most parts of the world except in the biggest movie market in the world, China. ## During the covid-19 pandemic, it has been difficult for Hollywood to release its movies in China, especially Marvel movies. "Spider-Man: No Way Home" was supposed to release in China in January this year and things didn't work at that time. And now, the Chinese authorities have put one condition in front of makers in order to release "No Way Home" in China. ## According to reports, the Chinese authorities have asked Sony Pictures to remove The Statue of Liberty from "Spider-Man: No Way Home" if they wanted to release the film in China. This demand is something that will be very hard for Sony to accept as the entire climax action sequence in the movie takes place with a trio of Spider-Men swinging over and around Lady Liberty as they battle the supervillains. ## It needs to be noted that China has been a huge market for Spider-Man movies in the past. The previous two Spider-Man movies featuring Tom Holland had grossed $116 million and $200 million in China, respectively. Meanwhile, the CEO of Sony Pictures, Tom Rothman's top priority has been to release "No Way Home" in China, so it will be interesting to see how things proceed from hereon. ## Directed by Jon Watts, In "No Way Home", Parker asks Dr. Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) to use magic to make his identity as Spider-Man a secret again following its public revelation at the end of Far From Home. When the spell goes wrong, the multiverse is broken open which allows visitors from alternate realities to enter Parker's universe.## t stars Tom Holland as Peter Parker/Spider-Man alongside Zendaya, Benedict Cumberbatch, Jacob Batalon, Jon Favreau, Jamie Foxx, Willem Dafoe, Alfred Molina, Benedict Wong, Tony Revolori, Marisa Tomei, Andrew Garfield, and Tobey Maguire.## Stay tuned...

Box Office: The Batman Takes A Slow Start In China Amid Covid-19 Surge

Mumbai, March 19 - Warner Bros.' one of the most talked-about films, "The Batman" debuted in the biggest movie market in the world, China, on March 18. ## With the Robert Pattinson-fronted superhero film ruling the worldwide box office, the studio had hoped for the same in China as well, but that was not the case this time. From the last few days, China is witnessing a sudden rise in the covid-19 cases, forcing the closure of some cinema halls. ## While it is true that Hollywood films have struggled at the box office of late in China, "The Batman" was still expected to take a decent to a good start. However, contrary to the huge expectations, the film opened to a worryingly slow start on Friday, grossing $3.7 million, as per Hollywood trade expert Luiz Fernando. ## The opening of "The Batman" in China is low compared to "A Quiet Place" ($3.9M), and "Free Guy" ($5.2M), which were released in 2021. The movie, however, did surpass "Avatar's" re-release last year with a $3.5M opening. "The Batman" also outscored Tom Holland's recently released "Uncharted" ($2M). ## China is one of the key markets for the "Batman" franchise. The previous Batman films have reasonably done well in China. Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight Rises" earned $53 million in 2012 while "Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice" scored $97 million in 2016. Even "Justice League", which was not received well by the critics, grossed $106 million in China in 2017. ## According to Variety, "The Batman" will struggle to even come close to these aforementioned films with the film is currently tracking an RMB215 million ($34 million) lifetime total in China. The film showed improvement on Saturday, but it is unlikely to make any change in the lifetime forcast. ## Keeping aside China, "The Batman" is going very well in other domestic and international markets. It has grossed $516 million after two weeks at the box office. Domestically (North America), the Matt Reeves-directed grossed $263 million while overseas, it has minted $253 million. ## Stay tuned...
