'Jai Bhim' Director TJ Gnanavel To Make His Bollywood Debut With 'Dosa King'

Mumbai, July 25 - Junglee Pictures has announced its next film, an epic thriller drama "Dosa King". The studio has collaborated with the Tamil director, T.J. Gnanavel, who famously directed the Suriya-starrer "Jai Bhim". "Dosa King" marks his debut in Bollywood cinema. ## "Dosa King" is inspired by a woman called Jeevajothi Santhakumar and her tribulation with a restaurant mogul and hotelier P. Rajagopal, an accused in a 2001 murder case. P. Rajagopal was accused of a crime that shocked the nation resulting in a conviction after a trial that went on for 18 years - P.Rajagopal v. State of Tamil Nadu.## Sharing his excitement, Gnanavel, said, "I've observed the subject closely, following the case during my days as a journalist. I hope to bring out new dimensions through Jeevajothi's legal battle on screen. Today, directing this project & working on its characters feels surreal. I'm excited to begin this journey with Junglee Pictures which is known for developing some of the most iconic films in contemporary Indian Cinema".## The story of the upcoming film depicts Jeevajothi's fight against a powerful opponent, the owner of one of the largest South Indian restaurant chains in the world. An Indian restaurateur, better known as a family man who was worshipped for his huge-hearted generosity by not only his employees but also by the diners.## As per media reports, Rajagopal, who was the founder of the popular South Indian food chain - Saravana Bhavan, wanted to marry Jeevajothi, who was the daughter of one of his employees at his restaurant. ## Jeevajothi, however, was already married. To change things in his favor, Rajagopal hatched a criminal conspiracy to eliminate her husband, Prince Santhakumar. And in 2001, Prince Santhakumar was murdered and his body was found in Kodaikanal city of Karnataka. Rajagopal was eventually convicted for the murder of Jeevajothi Santhakumar's husband by the Supreme Court, a justice that was delivered almost two decades after the crime.## Junglee Pictures acquired the rights for the story of Jeevajothi Santhakumar in July 2021. Bhavani Iyer has penned the script of the film. Chennai, June 30 - Tamil superstar Suriya's legal drama film Jai Bhim holds a special mention in Tamil cinema. Directed by T. J. Gnanavel, the film deals with the subject of police bias and state violence against a marginalized community. ## Based on a true incident in 1993, which involves a case fought by Justice K. Chandru, it revolves around the lives of Sengeni and Rajakannu, a couple from the Irular tribe. Rajakannu was arrested by the police and was later missing from the police station. Sengeni seeks the help of an advocate Chandru to seek justice for her husband.## Upon its release on Amazon Prime Video in November last year, "Jai Bhim" got high critical appreciation. However, the movie's digital release left the audiences and Suriya's fans disappointed as many felt it deserved theatrical release for its bold and sensitive subject. ## Well, there is good news for the fans as "Jai Bhim" is making its way to theaters for the first time in India. Mumbai, February 8 - The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the nominees for the 94th Academy Awards on Tuesday (Feb. 8), and it brought disappointment to India, despite hopes from fans and the filmmakers behind it.## India's Tamil movie, "Jai Bhim", starring Suriya, was in the race to get the nomination in the Best International Feature Film category. The hope increased when Awards Editor for Rotten Tomatoes, Jacqueline Coley bid for "Jai Bhim" to get a nod for Best Picture nominations. However, the drama film based on real-life incidents, couldn't make it to the list. ## The movies that are nominated for Best International Feature Film, include - "Drive My Car" (Japan), "Flee" (Denmark), "The Hand of God" (Italy), "Lunana: A Yak In The Classroom" (Bhutan), and "The Worst Person In The World" (Norway). ## Meanwhile, the other film that was supposed to make it into the Best Feature Film category, Marvel/Sony's global blockbuster, "Spider-Man: No Way Home", also couldn't find a spot in the nominations. No Way Home was considered a long shot in the best picture race, and Marvel/Sony even started a campaign for Oscars nod over its box office success.## "Spider-Man: No Way Home" is currently playing in theaters and has so far grossed over $1.77 billion globally, there was hope that the Academy would recognize it for helping reinvigorate theater-going. However, despite falling short in the best picture race, "No Way Home" has been nominated in the Best Visual Effect category along with Marvel Studios' "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings".## Films based on comic books have often been ignored at the Oscars in the Best Picture category. 'Jai Bhim' Video Makes Its Way To YouTube Channel Of The Oscars

Chennai, Jan 18 (IANS) The official YouTube channel of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has chosen to feature a video of director Gnanavel explaining his critically acclaimed courtroom drama 'Jai Bhim', under its 'Scene At the Academy' segment.## The 12 minutes 47-second video clip begins with the opening scenes of the film. It then shows director Gnanavel explaining the theme of the film. This is followed by important sequences from the film.## In the video, director Gnanavel says, "The opening scene of the film shows the police segregating tribal people on the basis of caste. You could call it the film's theme. How easily a powerful system can brand the oppressed as habitual offenders on the basis of caste.## "When a privileged person is in trouble, their whole community shows up to fight. Tamil Films Dominate Google & Twitter Trends Of 2021 In India

Chennai, December 9 - Thalapathy Vijay's Tamil blockbuster "Master" has topped the list of most tweeted films of 2021 in India. The first Indian blockbuster of the pandemic era has taken the first spot over films like "Valimai" (Pongal 2022 release), Vijay's own "Beast" (summer 2022 release), "Jai Bhim", and "Vakeel Saab". ## Vijay's tweet unveiling the first look poster of "Beast" is also the most retweeted tweet in Indian entertainment in 2021. The star is now getting ready for the worldwide release of Beast which will take place in the summer of 2022.## Earlier, Suriya's "Jai Bhim" topped Google's most searched films of 2021 in India. Chennai, December 8 - Tamil superstar Suriya has won critical acclaim for his last two films, "Soorarai Pottru" and "Jai Bhim". Interestingly, both films were released on Amazon Prime Video and were among the most-watched films in Prime Video's history. ## Now, Google India has declared the list of its 'Year in Search' findings as it explained the top search trends of 2021 in the country. "Jai Bhim" which focuses on the real-life struggles of marginalized groups was the most googled film of the year in India. Another Prime Video film "Shershaah" starring Sidharth Malhotra, is the second most searched film on Google. ## Salman Khan-starrer "Radhe", which received the worst of reviews, was the 3rd most searched film of 2021 on Google India. Among the Hollywood titles, Marvel Studios' "Eternals" was the 5th most searched film in India while "Godzilla vs Kong" found the 7th spot in the list. Critically Acclaimed 'Jai Bhim' Director Expressed Regret On Actor Suriya Facing Criticism For The Film

Chennai, November 21 - Ever since actor Suriya's Tamil film "Jai Bhim" has released on Amazon Prime Video, it has triggered a new spot of controversy. Despite winning accolades for making such a hard-hitting film, the social drama film is being subjected to show the Vanniyar community in a bad light. ## While the makers of the film, including actor Suriya, are facing criticism, director Tha Se Gnanavel, feels responsible for all the trouble Suriya facing for doing this film. On Sunday, Gnanavel posted a statement on Twitter and said that he regretted the trouble Suriya was facing on his account.## "The welcome that 'Jai Bhim' got from all segments has brought us happiness. In the same way, I did not actually expect some opinions that have gone against the film", he said in a statement, claiming that he did not know that a calendar that was in the background would be construed as an identity of a community. ## He explained that the intention behind placing the calendar there was only to manifest the idea that the year was 1995. "None of us had any intention of showing the calendar as an identity of any community. When I got to know about the calendar from social media on the night of November 1, after the film had released on Prime Video, all efforts were made to immediately get the calendar changed on the morning of November 2 itself", he added. ## Stating that it was unfortunate that actor Suriya was being asked to take responsibility for something that he, as director, was solely responsible for, Gnanavel said he wished to express his regret for the difficulty it had caused to Suriya.
