Kevin Smith Recalls Writing Failed 'Superman' Movie For Ben Affleck

os Angeles, Jan 9 (IANS) Filmmaker Kevin Smith spoke in detail about an unsuccessful attempt to get a 'Superman' movie off the ground with Hollywood star Ben Affleck in the title role.## Smith was the inaugural guest on Yahoo Entertainment's 'The Never-Weres' series, reports variety.com. Both men were coming off the success of 'Mallrats' at the time.## Warner Bros. was in development on a new 'Superman' movie titled 'Superman Reborn', but Smith thought the screenplay was "terrible". That's when Smith pitched his own 'Superman' movie based on 'The Death of Superman' comic series. Smith's script went into development with producer Jon Peters, but the two clashed overcasting.## "I was writing it for Affleck," Smith said.## "Ben was heating up. Like he was there. I think he'd been hired for 'Armageddon'. Affleck, he's a f***ing giant, like he's built like a superhero, built like a giant action figure, particularly with the height. And then he puts on the muscles there too. So in my head and heart, it was always Ben and Michael Rooker".## Smith wanted Affleck for Superman and Rooker for the villainous role of Lex Luther, but Peters had a different idea. The Hollywood producer wanted to cast Sean Penn as Superman, as the actor was hot off an Oscar nomination for Best Actor thanks to his role in the 1995 drama 'Dead Man Walking'.## "(Jon Peters) goes, 'Look in (Penn's) eyes in that movie, he's (got) haunted eyes, the eyes of a killer'", Smith said.## "And I was like, 'Dude, it's Superman. You know, that's not how most people think of Superman. But he wanted to reinvent it. He wanted something gritty, graphic, and grown-up. He essentially wanted like what Zack Snyder eventually did (in 'Man of Steel' 'Batman v Superman' and 'Justice League,' which coincidentally featured Affleck as Batman opposite Henry Cavill's Superman)'".## Tim Burton eventually took over the reins of 'Superman Lives' and set Nicolas Cage to star. Affleck would get his superhero shot years later by being cast as Batman/Bruce Wayne in 'Batman v Superman'.## Affleck is reprising the character in Warner Bros' upcoming comic book tentpole 'The Flash', due in theatres on November 4.## Stay tuned...

Sony Pictures Pushed Jared Leto's 'Morbius' Release Date For 7th Time

Mumbai, January 4 - Jared Leto's vampire film "Morbius" is on the movie again after being delayed by 3 months by Sony Pictures. Previously slated for January 28, the Marvel movie will now debut in theaters on April 1st, 2022, in IMAX and premium large formats. ## This is 7th time Sony has pushed the "Morbius" release date since July 2020. The movie was originally slated for 10 July 2020, before being pushed back to 31st July over covid-19 fear. It was later announced for March 19, 2021, however, with covid cases on the rise again, it was decided for October 8, 2021, release.## While October 2021 was finally looking good for "Morbius", it had to make way for Sony's "Venom 2", which grabbed the October slot, and "Morbius" was pushed back to January 21 and then January 28, 2022. This time, things were looking all set for the superhero film, but dynamics have changed due to the Omicron variant of covid, which is said to be more infectious than the Delta. ## However, according to Deadline, the one factor motivating the push of "Morbius" was Sony's huge (continuing) success with Spider-Man: No Way Home, which established itself as the highest-grossing film of 2021 upon its December 17 debut. The Tom Holland-fronted is currently going strong at the box office and grossed $1.37 billion so far. It is said that Sony wants to give "No Way Home" a long run at the box office at the cost of postponement of "Morbius". ## In Morbius, Leto portrays the enigmatic antihero Michael Morbius. Dangerously ill with a rare blood disorder and determined to save others suffering his same fate, Dr. Morbius attempts a desperate gamble. While at first, it seems to be a radical success, the darkness inside him is unleashed. Will good override evil—or will Morbius succumb to his mysterious new urges?## Directed by Daniel Espinosa, the movie also stars Matt Smith, Adria Arjona, Jared Harris, Al Madrigal, and Tyrese Gibson. ## Stay tuned...

Tom Holland Set To Fetch Massive Pay Day After Blockbuster Success of 'Spider-Man: No Way Home'

Los Angeles, January 2 - Tom Holland, the 25-year old British actor, is in line to become the next big thing in the Hollywood film industry. The young talented actor has just delivered the biggest blockbuster of the covid-19 pandemic era in the form of "Spider-Man: No Way Home", which becomes the first film since December 2019 to gross $1 billion at worldwide box office. ## The instant box office blockbuster has had many factors that worked very well in favor of it, but it was Holland's peppy, quippy and youthful take on the role of Peter Parker/Spider-Man that gives the comic-book epic its zip and heart. The success of "No Way Home" could lead Holland into the elite league of Hollywood stars. ## According to Variety, Holland's brand and bankability have seen an exponential rise, thanks to his iconic superhero role, which he first played in "Captain America: Civil War" (2015). It is said that prior to his first Marvel appearance, Holland made less than $1 million per role in movies. Now, he could be making $2 million to $5 million for independent movies. ## The fact that "No Way Home" is proved to be the biggest hit for Holland, and according to a Variety report, the actor is set to hike his remuneration to feature in a leading role in traditional studio's commercial film from here on. The report suggests Holland's asking price should leap into the low eight-figures while at streamers, the Marvel star's paycheck could swing to $20 million or more. ## Tom Holland, however, has to deliver outside Marvel movies to continue to fetch higher paycheck in the future. While there is no doubt he perfectly lived up to expectations as Spider-Man at the box office, a huge test for his big screen prowess will be Sony's upcoming big-budget action adventure film "Uncharted", in which Holland is playing the young fortune hunter Nathan Drake. It is slated to release in February 2022. ## Stay tuned...

Billy Joel says Taylor Swift is this generation's Beatles

Los Angeles, Jan 1 (IANS) 'Piano Man' legend Billy Joel has compared Taylor Swift to The Beatles and insisted the 'Shake It Off' hitmaker is this generation's version of the Fab Four. ## Asked for his opinion on current artists, he told USA Today: "Adele is a phenomenal singer, kind of a (Barbara) Streisand throwback. Taylor (Swift) is also a very talented girl and she's productive and keeps coming up with great concepts and songs and she's huge." ## He added: "You have to give her high marks. She knows music and she knows how to write. She's like that generation's Beatles." ## Meanwhile, the 73-year-old musician said while he doesn't listen to much pop music nowadays, his kids keep him up to date and they love hearing contemporary stars referencing the 'Piano Man' legend. ## He added: "My kids listen to pop music - I really don't too much - and I'll be in the car with them when they make me turn (the radio) on and I might hear a reference to me. Della came home from school one day and said, 'Daddy, everybody knows who you are!'." ## Joel shared that despite the younger generation knowing who he is, as a child he never listened to "his parents' music". ## He said: "When I was a kid, my generation didn't take to my parents' music. They liked classical but also Sinatra and probably Perry Como and those kinds of singers. We kind of left them in the past and moved on to the new stuff, the Elvis generation and the Beatles generation and disco and the '80s." ## "We weren't a back-looking generation and there are a lot of younger people now looking backward and they like their parents' music, which is a strange phenomenon." ## "I look out (in the crowd) and see so many young people. I'm grateful for it, especially because they make more noise. It's a great mix." ##
