Chennai, June 26 - The legendary combo of actor Kamal Haasan and director Mani Ratnam reunited after 4 decades for a gangster action drama film Thug Life. It is among the most anticipated Tamil movies of the year; however, what followed next shocked the trade. ## Released on June 5, the film met with poor reception from critics and the audience. This resulted in a shocking box office performance of the film as it finished below 100 crores gross globally, turning into one of the biggest disasters of the year. ## Before the release of the film, the makers showed immense confidence in it and even publicly announced that it would be released on an OTT platform only after 8 weeks of theatrical release, breaking out from the usual norm of a 4-week window that exists in the Tamil Film Industry. ## The 8-week theatrical window announcement secured the movie's multiplex release in the Hindi version, becoming one of the first major Tamil movies to have a multiplex release in Hindi in recent times. However, the poor performance of the film led the makers to change their plans. ## According to the report by Pinkvilla, the makers have shortened the theatrical window of the movie to just 4 weeks to avoid further losses. The negotiations were made after Netflix, which is the official streaming partner of the movie, decided to reduce the OTT price of Thug Life. ## The movie was initially valued at 130 crore for OTT release, but the poor box office performance caused damage to this. It is said that Netflix was looking to renegotiate the price at 90 crore, but both parties eventually settled down at 110 crore for the digital rights, with a reduced OTT window of 4 weeks, as per Pinkvilla. ## Meanwhile, the reduced theatrical window has resulted in a breach of contract between the producers of Thug Life with the distributor and the national multiplex chains in North India. Chennai, June 26 - Superstar Rajinikanth's highly anticipated action drama Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, seems to have an uphill task in front of it. The film might need to emerge as the second biggest grosser for the veteran actor, just to become a box office success. ## Coolie is carrying huge expectations of delivering at the box office. The movie is being eyed as the one which has the potential to become the first Tamil movie to enter the 1000 crores club, and hence, it is getting crazy offers for theatrical distribution across the globe. ## Recently, it was revealed that the overseas business of Coolie was locked in the range of 80-85 crores, which is a record for a Tamil title. For Telugu states, the makers have reportedly been offered a huge price of around 45 crores, which is said to be the highest for a dubbed title in recent times. ## The theatrical business of the film for the home market, Tamil Nadu, is expected to be locked in the range of 110 crores, which is again a record. The presence of superstar Aamir Khan has kept the film in talks in the Hindi market as the makers are reportedly expecting 40-50 crores business for North India. ## The overall theatrical business of Coolie will reportedly be in the range of 300 crores, which means the movie will need to gross over 600 crores worldwide in order to emerge as a box office success. It will mostly need to outgross Rajinikanth's Jailer (605 crores gross), which is currently the third highest-grossing Tamil movie of all time, behind Thalapathy Vijay's Leo (606 crores gross). ## While the theatrical business offers for Coolie are eye-popping, it might be a risky bet given the fact that it will have a direct clash with Hrithik Roshan and Jr. NTR's War 2 on August 14. New Delhi, June 26 - Punjabi superstar Diljit Dosanjh's upcoming film Sardaar Ji 3 will not be releasing in India amid the growing controversy over the inclusion of Pakistani actress Hania Aamir in the film. The movie will now only be released outside the domestic market. ## Ever since the trailer of the film has been released, Sardaar Ji 3 is facing the heat as many people and film bodies objected to the casting of Hania Aamir, especially after the recent Phalagam terrorist attack in which Pakistani terrorists were involved in the killing of 26 tourists. ## Many people expressed their anger after the trailer was launched and asked the government to ban the film. Understanding the seriousness of the issue, the makers of Sardaar Ji 3 released a statement, confirming that the film won't be released in India. ## In the statement, the makers stated that " The film was shot well before the prevailing situation that our country is facing now, and it was never ever the case that any Pakistani artist was signed or was engaged after the terrorist attack in Pahalgam". ## Diljit Dosanjh, meanwhile, has backed the decision of makers to not release the movie in India in respect to the sentiments of the people. He also said that a lot of money has been invested in the film; hence, he is with the makers in whatever decision they have made, even though they will lose money for not releasing the film in the home market. ## Sardaar Ji 3 is a horror action comedy, directed by Amar Hundal and produced by Gunbir Singh Sidhu, Manmord Sidhu, and Diljit Dosanjh under White Hill Studios and Story Time Productions. Mumbai, June 26 - The countdown has begun for Yash Raj Films' mega-budgeted spy action thriller War 2, which is set to hit the big screen in 50 days on August 14. Hyderabad, June 25 - Director Sekhar Kammula's drama thriller Kuberaa, starring Dhanush, Nagarjuna, and Rashmika Mandanna, is turning out to be a big success at the box office as it has topped 100 crores gross collection worldwide in just 6 days. ## Released on June 20, the film has been soaring at the box office, thanks to the positive word of mouth. After scoring the biggest opening weekend for Dhanush and Nagarjuna, Kubraa is holding very well during the weekdays, and has managed to surpass 100 crores gross as I type this. ## In the first 5 days, through Tuesday, the film grossed an estimated 97 crores worldwide, including approximately 72 crores in India and 25 crores at the overseas box office. On its 6th day of business, it has entered the 100 crores club, becoming the 5th Telugu movie of the year to do so. ## Kuberaa is the 4th movie of Dhanush to hit 100 crores gross worldwide, after "Raayan" (also his highest-grossing movie), Vaathi/Sir, and Thiruchitrambalam. Mumbai, June 25 - Bollywood star Ajay Devgn returns as Jassi Randhawa in the upcoming romantic action comedy Son of Sardaar 2, which is slated to hit the big screen on July 25 amid big expectations. Directed by Vijay Kumar Arora, it is a spiritual sequel to the 2012 film Son of Sardaar. ## Son of Sardaar 2 will see mostly a new-looking star cast as Sanjay Dutt, Sonakashi Sinha, and Juhi Chawala, who were part of the first movie, won't be returning for the sequel. Mumbai, June 24 - Director Nitesh Tiwari's epic Ramayana is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious Indian films with the potential to emerge as the biggest blockbuster ever. The movie features Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Ram, Yash as Raavan, and Sai Pallavi as Goddess Sita. ## Ramayana is produced by Namit Malhotra's Prime Focus Studios and Yash's Monster Mind Creations. In a major development, it seems the official announcement of the epic with a first look teaser is on the way. According to the reports, a 3-minute-long title announcement video of Ramayana was censored on June 23. ## The announcement of the movie was supposed to be made earlier, but was postponed. Ramayana is among the costliest Indian movies ever, with a projected budget of over 1000 crores. Mumbai, June 24 - Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan's comedy drama Sitaare Zameen Par scored a good hold on Monday after the better-than-expected opening weekend collection at the domestic and worldwide box office with around 96 crores gross. ## Enjoying the superb word of mouth, Sitaare Zameen Par has topped 100 crores worldwide gross collection on Monday, becoming the 8th Bollywood movie of the year to achieve the feat. In India, the film has minted around 80 crores gross, while overseas collection is an estimated 30 crores, for the worldwide cume total of around 110 crores in 4 days. ## Needless to say, Sitaare Zameen Par is one of the surprise box office successes of the year.
