Kochi, January 21 - The Malayalam film industry has had a very good year of 2022 with multiple films succeeding at the box office. 2023 promises to take the industry a notch higher with even bigger projects lined up for the release. ## The two of the most-awaited Malayalam movies are Mohanlal's action thriller Ram and Dulquer Salmaan-fronted gangster film King of Kotha. Directed by Jeethu Joseph, "Ram" has been in production since 2020. Mohanlal plays the role of IPS, a RAW officer and undercover agent in the movie. ## "King of Kotha", on the other hand, is directed by Abhilash Joshiy and it is one of the most talked about Mollywood films in recent times. The film was announced in 2021 and the shoot commenced in September 2022.## There have been a lot of speculations on the release dates of both the aforementioned films. If all goes as per reported in the media, the Malayalam industry is going to witness a mega box office clash between these two films. It is reported that both movies are set to hit screens on August 24, 2023. Directed by Peyton Reed, "Ant-Man 3" is the first film in MCU's Phase 5 and is the 31st film of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). ## The sequel to "Ant-Man" (2015) and "Ant-Man and the Wasp" (2018), "Ant-Man 3" is scheduled to release on February 17, 2023, in North America as well as some other countries. The upcoming movie is one of the most-anticipated Hollywood titles and is expected to continue the box-office legacy of the MCU. ## According to Box Office Pro, the third installment of the superhero franchise is tracking $100+ million start domestically (North America). Chennai, January 21 - Thalapathy Vijay's family action entertainer Varisu has crossed 100 crores gross mark in the home state, Tamil Nadu. The movie achieved the feat in 10 days after debuting in theaters on January 11. ## Directed by Vamshi Paidipally, "Varisu" has so far grossed approx. 159 crores at the domestic box office, including approx. 100 crores in Tamil Nadu. It has become the 6th straight film for Thalapathy to enter the prestigious box office club in the state. ## "Varisu" has been performing exceptionally well ever since it was released in theaters. Despite the big clash with Ajith Kumar's "Thunivu", it has outperformed all other films, not just domestically but overseas as well. Bengaluru, January 21 - The Kannada film industry peaked in 2022 with back-to-back multiple box office blockbusters, led by Hombale Films' KGF 2, starring superstar Yash. Another film from the same studio, which stunned one and all with its phenomenal success was actor, and filmmaker Rishab Shetty's Kantara. ## Rooted in folklore, "Kantara" made a big punch at the box office and grossed over 400 crores worldwide against a budget of just around 15 crores. It is one of the biggest blockbusters in Indian cinema, and with such massive numbers, the second part of the film was inevitable which was recently confirmed by Hombale Films. ## While "Kantara 2" was already announced, it is now revealed that it will be a prequel rather than continuing the story with a sequel part, Rishab Shetty has reportedly confirmed the development. "Kantara 2" will delve into the back story of folklore that features in the first part. ## Rishab Shetty has started working on the script and he has gone to the forests of coastal Karnataka to conduct research for the film. Los Angeles, January 19 - HBO Max has a new winner in its hands as the series adaptation of the hit PlayStation game The Last of Us scores second biggest-ever premiere viewership on the streamer. ## According to Variety, "The Last of Us" scored 10 million views within two days after debuting on Sunday with 4.7 million views, which is the second biggest for HBO Max, behind only "House Of The Dragon's" 10 million. The viewership numbers are only for the US audience as HBO Max doesn't disclose global stats. ## "The Last of Us" viewership topped "Game of Thrones" which garnered just 4.2 million premiere viewers in 2011. Sunday numbers for "The Last of Us" were nearly double the Season 2 premiere night returns for "Euphoria", HBO's biggest modern-day hit next to "House of the Dragon", per Variety. ## "We are thrilled to see fans of the series and game alike experience this iconic story in a new way, and we extend our gratitude to them for helping to make it a success", Casey Bloys, chairman and CEO of HBO & HBO Max Content, said.## The show is premiering on Disney Plus Hotstar in India with English subtitles. The buzz for the movie is sky-high and the industry is anticipating something big with this Yash Raj Films' biggie. ## The advance booking for the movie was opened yesterday, and as you read this, it has already sold over 5 lakh tickets, including 260K in three national chains (PVR, Inox & Cinepolis) for the opening day in all formats. ## The advance booking collection of "Pathaan" has already crossed most of the Bollywood films' pre-sales post the covid-19 pandemic, and by tomorrow, it will be behind only "Brahmastra" which sold approx. 6 lakh tickets for the opening day in advance. The movie also stands a chance to cross "Brahmatra" opening day pre-sales by tomorrow or the day after.## As per the industry insiders, "Pathaan" will be released on over 4500 screens for the Hindi version, making it one of the biggest releases ever. The industry is anticipating a 30+ crores opening, however, looking at the pace of the advances and the genuine excitement among the moviegoers, the opening of 40+ crores should be a cakewalk. ## Returning to advance booking, "Pathaan" will be aiming to challenge "War" opening day advance booking numbers (32+ crores). Over the last few days, the collection in the anime country has jumped, thanks to the film's win at Golden Globe and its release in Dolby cinema and increase in IMAX screens. ## The Oscars nominations, which are scheduled to take place on January 24th, could give a further boost to the "RRR" collection in Japan.
