Chennai, January 13 - The two Pongal releases, Thalapathy Vijay's Varisu and Ajith Kumar's Thunivu are having neck-to-neck competition at the box office with the former having a little advantage at the domestic box office after two days. ## Both films had a good hold on their second day despite dropping in the range of 50% each. The two days domestic gross collection for Thalapathy Vijay-starrer is approx. 45 crores while Ajith-fronted has grossed 42.50 crores.## "Varisu" witnessed another good hold on its 3rd day and scored an estimated 12 crores gross, dropping approx. 10%. The total domestic collection for the movie now stands at approx. 57 crores after 3 days with 2 big weekend days ahead of it. The movie is eyeing 85+ crores gross in the 5-day opening weekend. ## "Thunivu", on the other hand, sees a bigger drop of around 23% than "Varisu" on its 3rd day/first Friday for an estimated 10 crores gross. The total domestic gross collection for the movie reaches approx. 52 crores in 3 days. ## The direct clash between "Varisu" and "Thunivu" has clearly dented both's box office chances as none of them are able to utilize their full potential. Hyderabad, January 13 - Megastar Chiranjeevi and Ravi Teja's action drama film Waltair Veerayya is off to an excellent start at the box office. Despite the mixed reviews and audiences' responses, the Bobby-directed film utilizes the Sankranthi holiday. ## As per the early estimates, "Waltair Veerayya" grossed an estimated 33+ crores on the opening day. The share collection is expected to be 20+ crores, which is almost 1/4 of the total business of the movie.## "Waltair Veerayya" has a much better opening than Chiranjeevi's last release "Godfather" which opened to around 24 crores gross last year. The latest tentpole could have taken an even bigger start if it had got a solo release as there is also Nandamuri Balakrishna's "Veera Simha Reddy". ## Meanwhile, "Veera Simha Reddy", which opened to the biggest start for an Indian movie in 2023 with a domestic gross collection coming in close to 40 crores, has a drop on its second day. As per the early estimates, the movie dropped in the range of 60% for an estimated 10+ crores gross. The final numbers on the second day can go to 12-13 crores depending the night shows. ## The Gopichand-directed movie gets affected due by "Waltair Veerayya" as the screen count reduced drastically but still, the second-day numbers are poor considering the huge opening. Now, the makers of the film have roped in a Kannada actress Sapthami Gowda to play a key role in the film.## Sapthami was recently seen in "Kantara" which is one of the biggest blockbusters of Indian cinema. Early Estimates: Varisu And Thunivu Hold Strong On The Second Day

Chennai, January 12 - The two powerful forces of Tamil cinema, Thalapathy Vijay and Ajith Kumar collectively scored the day ever at the Tamil Nadu box office when their respective films, Varisu and Thunivu grossed 41+ crores on the opening day. ## The Ajith-starrer won the opening-day battle in the home state but it was "Varisu" that took the honors at the domestic box office a little over 31 crores against 28+ crores of "Thunivu". The word of mouth for both films is on the positive side and that helped both hold strong on the second day. ## As per the early estimates, "Varisu" grossed an estimated 18-20 crores on the second day, dropping around 40% which is lesser than the usual drop for a Tamil film. "Thunivu", on the other hand, has a drop in the similar range for an estimated 17-19 crores gross. ## The two days total domestic collection for "Varisu" is around 50 crores while "Thunivu" has minted approx. 45 crores gross (final second-day numbers may vary).## Both, "Varisu" and "Thunivu" are getting benefitted because of the Pongal holidays and this is expected to continue during throughout the opening weekend. Mumbai, January 12 - Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar has had an underwhelming 2022 year on the work front. The actor had multiple releases last year but none of them could become hits at the box office as all his films finished below the 100 crores mark domestically. ## Apart from the theatrical releases, Akshay also had a digital release in the form of the crime thriller Cuttputli and it has good success. A remake of the 2018 Tamil film "Ratsasan", "Cuttputli" is directed by Ranjit M. Tewari and produced by Pooja Entertainment. ## "Cuttputli" was the most-watched original Hindi film on Digital Platforms, according to Ormax Media. It was released on Disney Plus Hotstar on September 2 and scored 26.9 million views. Yami Gautam's "A Thursday" was the second most-watched film with 25.5 million views. It was also released on Disney+Hotstar. ## Disney Plus Hotstar was the biggest gainer from the Hindi film industry with 3 of its original movies crossing 24 million views each as "Govinda Naam Mera" scored 24.4 million views, per Ormax. Disney+ Hotstar (7 films), Prime Video & Netflix (4 films each) share the top 15 spots between them. ## The viewership data by Ormax Media has been collected through a methodology that consists of the number of people who watched the show (at least one full episode) or film (at least 30 mins). It does not represent the number of accounts used for watching the show/ film, e.g., three members of a family, or two friends, watching on the same account are considered as the unique audience.
