Tom Holland's Domination At The Box Office Continues With 'Uncharted'

Los Angeles, February 19 - Tom Holland is proving his worth at the box office as his latest film, "Uncharted", also featuring Mark Wahlberg, has surpassed expectation and opened to a strong $15.4 million on Friday at the domestic (North America) box office. ## The Sony Pictures' video game adaptation, based on the popular PlayStation game series from publisher Naughty Dog, "Uncharted" is projected to gross $40-$44 million in the 3-day weekend. "Uncharted" is doing far more business than expected thanks to younger males who are frequently visiting theaters, reports The Hollywood Reporter. ## Directed by Ruben Fleischer, the movie did not receive well by the critics, giving just 39% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, it is being loved by the audiences, who gave it a B+ CinemaScore and 88% score on Tomatometer. The strong box office performance of "Uncharted" also gives an indication of how critics' reviews have become overrated, as suggested by director Ruben Fleischer, who called critics' reviews surprising for being so negative. ## The $120 million budgeted film was conceived as an origin story for the game series' globe-trotting adventurer Nathan Drake, played by Holland. Nathan begins the story as a bartender before he is recruited by seasoned treasure hunter Victor "Sully" Sullivan (Mark Wahlberg) to recover a fortune amassed by Ferdinand Magellan and lost 500 years ago. ## What starts as a heist job for the duo becomes a globe-trotting, white-knuckle race to reach the prize before the ruthless Santiago Moncada (Antonio Banderas), who believes he and his family are the rightful heirs.## Meanwhile, Holland's "Spider-Man: No Way Home", which opened in December 2021, is still putting strong legs at the domestic box office. On its 10th Friday domestically, the superhero movie grossed $1.8 million, dropping just 9% from the last Friday. Mumbai, February 17 - "Spider-Man: No Way Home" might not have set a release date in China yet, another Tom Holland-fronted movie is going to release in the biggest movie market in the world. ## Sony Pictures' "Uncharted", starring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg has been dated for a March 14 release in China. The studio's Weibo account shared the news today with a video message from Holland and Wahlberg and a subtitled trailer, as well as a new poster, according to Deadline. ## Based on Sony's video game series of the same name developed by Naughty Dog, "Uncharted" won't be a day-and-date release with domestic, but it is surely a great sign as Sony Pictures' "Spider-Man: No Way Home" is facing trouble to get released in China, owing to what amounted to an unofficial ban on Marvel throughout the past year. ## Apart from "Uncharted", the other Hollywood title that gets a release date in China is Warner Bros./DC's "The Batman", starring Robert Pattinson. The superhero film will be released four days after "Uncharted" on March 18. The studio, during a virtual press event in June last year, had confirmed the 7th installment in this highly popular franchise, and now, the company has confirmed that "Rise of the Beasts" will start a new trilogy. ## The studio originally launched the Transformers movie franchise in 2007 with Micahel Bay directing and Shia LaBeouf starring. After five main films in the series, Paramount delivered a reboot film, "Bumblebee" in 2018. The new trilogy of the main series is kicking off in 2023 with "Rise of the Beasts", which takes place between Bumblebee and the Michael Bay movies. ## As announced by Paramount last year, the forthcoming Transformers movie will be different from its previous films in many ways. It will include robots who transform themselves into animal forms like gorillas, falcons, and rhinoceros. The Keanu Reeves-fronted movie was released in theaters and on HBO Max simultaneously in December last year, which is the reason behind the lawsuit. ## Village Roadshow Pictures has alleged that Warner Bros. is prioritizing HBO Max to increase streamer's popularity at the cost of movies box office revenue. ## "WB's sole purpose in moving the release date of The Matrix Resurrections forward was to create a desperately needed wave of year-end HBO Max premium subscriptions from what it knew would be a blockbuster film, despite knowing full well that it would decimate the film's box office revenue and deprive Village Roadshow of any economic upside that WB and its affiliates would enjoy, especially as compared to a 2022 exclusive theatrical release", states the complaint filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, according to The Hollywood Reporter. ## Warner Bros. said in a statement, "This is a frivolous attempt by Village Roadshow to avoid their contractual commitment to participate in the arbitration that we commenced against them last week. We have no doubt that this case will be resolved in our favor".## The production company alleged that "The Matrix Resurrections" was supposed to release in 2022, but was moved up by Warner Bros. to boost HBO Max's subscribers. The day-and-date release of The Matrix sequel really put a massive dent in its box office potential as the movie grossed only $37 million domestically. It is also causing huge losses to actors, producers, and other financial partners whose revenue depends on the film's box office numbers. ## Warner Bros. renegotiated contracts tied to box office performance when it announced that it would put its entire slate of 2021 movies onto HBO Max and in theaters.
