Dulquer Salmaan Announces His Next Pan India Movie 'Kaantha'

Kochi, July 28 - Malayalam star Dulquer Salmaan will headline his next Pan India movie "Kaantha". DQ will produce the film under his banner Wayfarer Films in association with Rana Daggubati's Spirit Media.## While the plot details of the movie are kept under wraps for now, "Kaantha will be directed by Selvamani Selvaraj, whose debut feature "Nila" (2016) won the audience award at the Cinequest San Jose Film Festival. The filmmaker also assisted Ang Lee on the Oscar-winning "Life of Pi" (2012).## The movie was announced on DQ's birthday today. The actor said in a statement that the story of "Kaantha" is "unlike anything we've seen in Indian cinema" and that he is eager to bring this movie on the screen soon. ## "Kaantha is extremely close to my heart and I've been eager to bring this to life from the day I heard the story as it's unlike anything we've seen in Indian cinema. Mumbai, July 28 - Well-known Bollywood filmmaker Nitesh Tiwari's romantic drama "Bawaal" starring Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor was supposed to be an experimental love story in the backdrop of World War II but it is turning into a major controversial attempt on this historical chapter.## The film has been accused of trivializing and demeaning the deaths of millions of Jews killed during the Holocaust by using Auschwitz as a metaphor for relationship problems. Many critics in India and internationally have slammed the film for drawing parallels to Jews suffering in Auschwitz camp and dying. ## Produced by Nadiadwala Entertainment, "Bawaal" tells the story of a history teacher who is embarrassed by his new wife's epilepsy. As they travel together to Europe to visit historic second world war sites, they fall in love with each other.## The movie receives a strong rebuke from the Simon Wiesenthal Center (SWC), an NGO dedicated to the well-being of Jews as well as the Holocaust victims. The NGO has issued a statement demanding the removal of the film from Amazon Prime Video which is the exclusive streaming partner of the film. ## "Auschwitz is not a metaphor. It is the quintessential example of Man's capacity for Evil. By having the protagonist in this movie declare that 'Every relationship goes through their Auschwitz', Nitesh Tiwari, trivializes and demeans the memory of 6 million murdered Jews and millions of others who suffered at the hands of Hitler's genocidal regime", SWC said in a statement.## The NGO called on Amazon to remove the movie from its platform and to stop "monetizing" the Holocaust. "If the filmmaker's goal was to gain PR for their movie by reportedly filming a fantasy sequence at the Nazi death camp, he has succeeded. Amazon Prime should stop monetizing Bawaal by immediately removing this banal trivialization of the suffering and systematic murder of millions of victims of the Nazi Holocaust", the statement further read. Prime Video has not responded yet.## "Bawaal" was meant for theatrical release before makers changed their minds and send the movie directly to Amazon Prime Video. Mumbai, July 28 - The Barbenheimer-mania has set the Indian box office on fire and emerged as the first choice for the audiences this past week. Margot Robbie-led "Barbie" and director Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer", two completely opposite films brought in over $15 million combined gross collection in their opening week in India. ## Nolan's atom bomb movie, "Oppenheimer" has been by far the biggest movie since its release in India with a gross collection of 87 crores ($10.5 million) in the first week. The movie had a fantastic opening weekend of 58 crores gross, before showing a very good hold during the weekdays to score approx. 29 crores gross from Monday to Thursday. ## "Oppenheimer" has already become the highest-grossing film of Nolan in India after beating his superhero movie "Batman: The Dark Knight Rises" in just 4 days. It will be crossing 100 crores gross during its second weekend and will become the second Hollywood movie of the month after "Mission Impossible 7" and 3rd of the year after "Fast X" to do so. ## Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling-starrer fantasy comedy film "Barbie" clocked 32.50 crores gross (~$4 million) in its first week at the Indian box office, and was the second most-watched movie during its week in India. Directed by Greta Gerwig, "Barbie" had a good opening weekend with 22 crores gross. It witnessed a drop on Monday but held extremely well since then to bring in another 10.50 crores (Mon-Thu).## The combined first-week collection of Barbenheimer (Barbie and Oppenheimer) is approx. 129 crores ($15.70 million) which is huge. The movie is turning out to be much needed big box office victory for Warner Bros. Pictures studio which has had tough luck with recent movies, especially the underwhelming performances of DC movies. ## Greta Gerwig's directorial is on the dream run at the domestic (North America) box office and putting insane numbers during the weekdays. After the biggest opening weekend of the year with $162 million, "Barbie" has had one of the biggest first Mondays ever domestically. ## The movie scored a whopping $26.2 million, which is the 9th biggest first Monday and the biggest ever for Warner Bros. Pictures. With momentum and supremely positive word of mouth by its side, "Barbie" scored a huge $26 million on Tuesday, just a 0.30% drop from Monday. It is the 6th biggest non-opening first Tuesday and again, the biggest for Warner Bros. of all time at the US box office. ## The total domestic gross of the movie stands at $214.10 million through Tuesday, and there is so much to look forward to before another rock-solid second weekend which is already projected to score over $70+ million. As said, before the second-weekend madness begins, Hollywood industry trackers are expecting another $23+ million Wednesday, which is remarkable. The full first 7-day week could well be over $255+ million before it hits $300 million on Saturday. ## "Barbie" is likely to top $1 billion at the global box office which will be the first for Warner Bros. since "Joker" (2019). The worldwide gross of the movie reached 472.60 million, including $258.50 million at the international box office through Tuesday. Meanwhile, at the Indian box office, "Barbie" is having a good run. It witnessed a drop on Monday, but since then, it has been holding extremely well and showing no drop at all. The movie crossed 30 crores gross in the first 6 days.
