Global Box Office Jumped By 31 Percent In 2023 From Previous Year

Los Angeles, January 5 - The global box office in 2023 witnessed a jump of 31% as estimated from the previous year 2022, according to estimates released Thursday by leading U.K.-based analytics firm Gower Street (via The Hollywood Reporter). ## The report suggests that the global box office revenue in 2023 hit $33.9 billion, a gain of 31% over 2022's $25.9 billion, but was still 15% behind the average of the three years before the pandemic (2015-2019). Despite the sharp rise in 2023, the box office is yet to match the level of pre-pandemic.## The Hollywood Box Office jumped to $9.05 billion in 2023, an increase of 21% from 2022. The non-Hollywood revenue made a roaring comeback last year with a jump of 35% to $24.8 billion over 2022. According to Gower Street, China was the biggest contributor with $7.71 billion, an enormous 83% gain over 2022 and only 6% behind the pre-pandemic 2017-2019 average. ## Outside Hollywood and China, the box office jumped by 20% to $17.1 billion from 2022. The Indian box office gained around 8% to $1.40 billion from 2022. ## In 2023, Warner Bros. "Barbie" ($1.44 billion) and Universal/Illumination's "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" ($1.36 billion) were the two films which grossed over $1 billion at the worldwide box office.
